How do you keep your hair from looking limp and bedraggled by teh afternoon?

I'm growing my hair after having it short for years (pixie/crop type short). It's now at an acceptable chin-length layered bob, and I want to go longer to about shoulder length, but no matter how nicely I style it in the morning, by lunchtime I look like I've just got up - it's tangled and rough looking. If I brush it, it looks smooth but all the style that I've carefully blowdried it into has gone.
Is tehre some obvious solution to this that I'm missing?
I used to have very long hair but I think I just sort of wore it long and hanging so didn't really have that problem.

How are you styling it, are you using straightners or is it more choppy?

TheKitchenWitch · 23/02/2019 17:53

Blow drying. It’s a slightly flicky style.

I have grown out all layers and had a one length blunt cut - it is sooooo much easier and looks the same all day

I’ve tried mousse, gel, waxy styling product and it all works for a couple of hours and then just goes pfffffffff

You could try mousse or gel on the roots before you dry it. Massage it into the wet hair, just on the roots though, otherwise it goes crispy. I had a similar problem as my hair is quite fine and had a tendency to go limp, especially in a hot kitchen. I found that a extra volume shampoo really helped.

You sound like me OP. I'm growing out a pixie, don't think its as long as you describe yet. I'm so tempted to get it chopped really short again because by lunchtime it looks totally shit. I'm considering buying GHD's as I've spent a fortune on products that either don't work or I'm using wrongly so I'm thinking I must need better straighteners. But I don't want to spend loads of money to get them and it not make any difference! Arghhhh!

I have the same type of hair! I’ve been growing it out of a pixie cut for about a 2 years and it’s past my shoulders now.

My best advice is be realistic about what you can achieve with your natural hair type and texture. I always look at hair styles before going to the hairdressers but then realise all the ones I love are just completely unachievable for my fine hair.

What I do now is talk to the hairdresser, I always tell them about my hair type and say I have minimal time to style it this way they can advise what sort of cutting technique to use, razor, blunt cut, layers etc. And then they can advise on the style based on your face.

I now go for blunt cuts to make my hair look thicker and tell them to dry it in a natural style (so not a poker straight blow dry). If you have a good cut it really does mean that you can just let your hair dry naturally with no product and it will still look good!

I don't think I can do a lot with the cut yet as I'm still trying to grow it - it's about chin length, but still in lots of random layers from growing out the short style. But I have an appointment at the hairdresser in a couple of weeks to get highlights - f irst time I've had it done professionally rather than just doing them at home - I'm starting to get a few grey hairs that I want to "hide", so I will ask for advice on the cut then.

I just find it so annoying that I can blow dry and style it really nicely and it just falls flat within a couple of hours. I've tried mousse, gel etc, but nothing seems to help at all.

Blow dries always go limp for me. I wave my hair with straighteners and then blast with hairspray. Lasts all day
