Recommend me a leather satchel bag

I need a classic but timeless leather satchel style bag. I carry heavy files daily so it needs to be really strong. I'm happy to spend up to £200 as I want it to last. I prefer natural, matte type of leather rather than a glossy/patent look. (Along the lines of traditional brown Spanish leather)

Any ideas?

Cambridge Satchel Company.
I have 3 satchels in different sizes from there. Lovely and great quality.

BikeRunSki · 20/02/2019 19:55

Or Zatchels, very similar to Cambridge
MN once crashed the Zatchels website when they had a 50% off sale.

feelingsinister · 20/02/2019 19:59

Scaramanga do beautiful hand made leather bags. They last for years and look even better when they're more worn in. Really good customer service too.

Zatchels and Cambridge seem to be the glossy type you said you didn't want.

The Leather Satchel Company in Liverpool are the original (and best). They can make them bespoke and the customer service is great. Not expensive either. Www.leathersatchel.com I think.

I have this one and use it every day. It gets better with age www.leathersatchel.com/styles/briefcases/14-inch-briefcases/14-inch-briefcase-satchel-briefcase-in-oak-leather/

If you want to commission a satchel, starting from her basic design, google Hilary Johnson Handmade. She's a craftswoman who works alone in Devon, and uses great leathers and enjoys bespoke commissions, at not stupid prices, for an item you will use for years.

Gusti Leder?

pollyhampton · 20/02/2019 20:21

I have a zatchel bag. I agree it looks a bit 'glossy but it is beautiful, well made and sturdy!

ChishandFips33 · 20/02/2019 20:21

Gusti

I have a pencil roll and it feels gorgeous!

Had this for over two years now. Was £150 and they have a website.

Seconding Xing's recommendation of Hilary Johnson Handmade:

I've got a couple of bags here, including one satchel-type bag -- they are beautifully made, you can customise size/leather/finishing/strap length etc. Have a look at the workbags section as well as the satchels. I have the Oak workbag in mustard, it's aging beautifully, and am very happy with it.

Thank you everyone, I love them all Blush. Stupid question but does Brown or navy satchel 'go' with black, Gray and brown clothing?

Thedarklady · 21/02/2019 07:56

Navy

ChishandFips33 · 21/02/2019 09:28

Brown would go with all of those colours if it's the tan/oak colour rather than a chocolate shade

ChishandFips33 · 21/02/2019 09:32

I think the tan/oak stands out rather than blending in.

Depends if you want to look 'dressy' or business like then navy might be better suited

I'd wear a tan bag with those colours.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 21/02/2019 09:39

scaramanga look less nice IRL than on the website, years back a couple of friends had them (nevermind they looked like a pair of lost evacuees with their identical bags) but the bags were stiff and cardboardy, and I did not get that need to sniff and feel the leather

it may just have been that style, but it did cure me of ooohhhhing and ahhhhhing over the website.

There are lots of Cambridge Satchel Company bags on ebay - at good prices. I have bought a couple off there, both nearly new.

e.g.:

rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F273705625505

I would say though that satchels are not the comfiest for carrying heavy files - especially those with thin straps. I still do though, despite my shoulders' protestations!

Yoshi are great quality and there's a sale on! www.yoshi.co.uk/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAtbnjBRDBARIsAO3zDl_eceWvF9rZ2P-SB5qo6ASn2CTK2sSNYK-7t6n7uErdbaP2XDjsqZ0aAhF0EALw_wcB
