Best permanent hair dye for dark brown shades

I can't afford to have my hair salon dyed unfortunately and it's in desperate of being done.
I've used L'Oréal before but wondering if there's anything better?

I'd like to know too, currently salon dying, which I can afford anymore as I don't work as many hours as I used to and something's got to give Sad also dark brown, highlighted hair, but has a tendency to go black if too dark a shade Shock

I'm the same @Mrs9C I have to be careful as mine goes black too.
Hopefully someone will pop on here with a good recommendation 🤞🏼

Ones I've used in the past -

I can safely say that Nice n Easy is one of the ones that send me black, or every colour but what's on the box!

John Frieda - found this ok, but patchy at times, and difficult to get my shade right too.

You can buy the stuff they use in a salon and do it yourself at home. If you’ve got a hair suppliers near you (like Sally’s) or they’re available on amazon. I’ve used the Majirel dye before, and get the same result as I do in the salon. Make sure you see samples of the colours though rather than going on the names, as they are usually much darker in reality than you would think from the name. I used 6.1 which is called dark ash blonde but it’s actually mid to dark brown. You need some developer too, and a pit, brush and gloves, all available in hair supply places. Can probably pick up the whole lot for about £20, and You’d only need to buy the colour next time, for about £8.

I used to use a number 5 shade which is medium brown. The higher the number the darker the colour. I often used garnier nutrisse

Sorry other way round. Higher the number the lighter the colour

I echo princessbear80 and use a 50/50 mix of 4.0 and 3.

I use to colour my hair a 'natural' looking mid-dark brown colour & finding a good dye to cover my stubborn auburn (with a few greys) roots I was struggling until I came across Schwarzkopf Poly Colour Tint. It's a permanent colour, although it does fade a bit, but it was fantastic at covering my roots. I used either shade Natural Brown or Medium Brown if I wanted to go darker. £2 from Asda, Wilkos, B&M & I think Poundland have started selling it too. Doesn't come with conditioner, just use your own.
