Yellow teeth

Talk to me about teeth whitening. Have you had it? How did you find it?

I'm early 30s and my teeth are yellow. I've never smoked, never drank coffee, never drank red wine. I drink 4 cups of tea per day. Occasionally 3, occasionally 5, but 4 on average.

As a child and teen I drank lots of tea (encouraged by parents), and my parents didn't encourage regular tooth brushing so I only ever brushed in the morning never before bed until I was an adult, this is why I think my teeth are yellow.

I would LOVE to have white teeth 💕

I've tried pretty much everything and the best product I've used are the Crest white strips (have to buy from America) they're not all that cheap but give great results. The places where you go and get the light shined on them are a scam in my opinion, the immediate results are great but they disappear within days.

I whitened my teeth around 10 years ago. Used a home kit that was provided by the dentist. My teeth were just genetically yellow. There was no reason for them to have yellowed (didn’t eat/drink much that would discolour them, and non-smoker).

My teeth are really sensitive, and it was sometimes very painful the next day (had to wear trays on my teeth at night, containing the bleach). Alternating nights with bleach and then Sensodyne helped. I was really pleased with the results, and am now considering doing it again, as I feel they are stating to yellow again a bit.

unicornsarereal1 · 16/02/2019 21:53

I had the gum shields made and I order the whitening gel online that you sleep with on the trays overnight.

I find it works really well - I also use an electric toothbrush with oral b toothpaste.
Occasionally use charcoal toothpaste too.

I don't rate the light whitening thing at all

CatinMyLap · 16/02/2019 21:59

I used the strips and I would rate my teeth sensitive but gaaaaawd they hurt after

CatinMyLap · 16/02/2019 21:59

*wouldnt

I’ve also done the proper fitted dentist trays and kits and they didn’t do much

RugbyRugby · 16/02/2019 22:08

Phillips zoom whitening done at the dentist is amazing. It's expensive but the results are really worth it. Comparing friends who did the home kit vs the dentist one its clear that the dentists is the way to go.

Figgygal · 16/02/2019 22:11

I've just started using the activated charcoal powder today

Giving it a go

Nelsondog · 16/02/2019 22:17

I made a similar reply to this in another thread about how you can go the DIY route and save money.

Purchase a custom fit teeth tray kit off eBay, take your own impressions and send the kit back and within a couple of weeks you receive the trays. I watched tutorials on YouTube repeatedly until I was familiar with how to do it properly. It’s not difficult but it is time sensitive.

I then purchased Philips Zoom DayWhite 14% off eBay and whitened them for an hour everyday until I reached the desired shade which for my teeth took a week or so.

I whiten them everybody 3 years or so. In the meantime I maintain them with Eucryl Toothpowder once or twice a week and make sure I try to limit my intake of known food and drink that stains.

The total initial cost is around £100.

I’d be happy to answer any questions.

Have you tried brushing with bicarb? There is a method using hydrogen pyroxide but I've never tried that and you obviously have to be more careful! I just brush with bicarb occasionally and carefully.

Novelsic · 16/02/2019 22:19

Might be worth a try as a cheap option to start with before you try more ££££ options

OhDiddums · 16/02/2019 22:26

Sounds really silly but have you ever had a hygienist visit? I'm a smoker and drink tea so neither are kind to my teeth. I have regular hygienist visits and my teeth look very white after a thorough cleaning. If you're going for the whitening option speak to your dentist. I've seen people who have abused whitening strips and they have ruined their enamel.

OnTheFrow · 16/02/2019 23:09

Try eucryl powder. Dead cheap and go steady but I think it works really well to strip the crap.

FullLaundryBasket · 17/02/2019 07:32

I don't have any crap on my teeth it's just the colour of my enamel

I’ve used the Crest strips off Ebay (US ones?) they were q good though teeth a bit sensitive wary of using too much though

JiltedJohnsJulie · 17/02/2019 07:49

Have you tried risking with Pearl Drops OP. They even whiten my teeth, which is saying something Smile

Babygrey7 · 17/02/2019 08:15

Pearl drops are very abrasive, they essentially remove the enamel of your teeth Shock

ZigZagZombie · 17/02/2019 09:09

OP - I bet your teeth are 100% normal and far removed from Worzel Gummidge! We've just been subjected to "Instagram style" teeth which are not really representative of what's normal.

My dentist is very much of the train of thought that if your teeth are otherwise health - don't fuck around with them!

Personally I won't invite pain into my oral cavity (ooer!).

ASauvignonADay · 17/02/2019 09:13

Look at HiSmile - it's meant to be good

MaybeitsMaybelline · 17/02/2019 09:16

Dd had horrid yellow teeth, I paid for professional whitening, it cost £500 for the in surgery zoom stuff plus trays. The dentist warned the results may not be that great.

My god, they were amazing. She looked stunning. They only lasted about a year but the trays bring the whitening back when reused.

FullLaundryBasket · 17/02/2019 20:12

Thanks I'll look into zoom

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 17/02/2019 20:15

I had zoom whitening and I find the results similar to crest whitestrips. Get the professional whitestrips, they are amazing.

PixieDust20 · 17/02/2019 20:21

Dentist offer home whitening and zoom in chair whitening. In chair whitening takes about 2 hours and cost about £600. Home whitening cost around £300. I use Home whitening and it gives better results and you can control how white you want to go, it's brilliant with the Philips whitening sold at the dentist usually around £25 a syringe and last longer than a month. I choose night whitening over day whitening as it was easier for me. But make sure you have a hygienist appointment before whitening as stains would need to be removed first x

airedailleurs · 17/02/2019 20:23

Funnily enough I've just completed a week's treatment with HiSmile on the recommendation of a younger work colleague. I drink a lot of tea and coffee and had been looking for a natural teeth-whitening method for some time. It is very easy to use and the contents seem to be all natural. My teeth are definitely whiter and more shiny. I would definitely repeat the treatment in a few months for maintenance.

Livedandlearned · 17/02/2019 20:24

I like Whiteglo toothpaste, really made my teeth whiter.
