Dark hair turning grey very slowly

TheRiverIsAComfort · 16/02/2019 14:27

My hair is very dark but greys are starting to come through-not many, maybe about 10% at the most but they do stand out. I have been plucking them but now there are too many!

I want to cover them but can't go lighter because I am too dark for a dye to have an effect and don't want to dye them dark, as it will look too harsh.

Any ideas?

Run a semi permanent through that's similar ish to your natural colour - they greys will pick it up ?

TheRiverIsAComfort · 16/02/2019 15:11

Thanks, f83mx.

I'm suppose I'm a bit worried that I'll end up like a tabby cat or with a really dyed look.

Try using a blue/cool conditioning toner. Makes the white hairs softer and blends them in.

TheRiverIsAComfort · 16/02/2019 15:39

That sounds good, BigGreenOlives! Thank you.

I am very dark too and have to go to a salon every 5 weeks for my roots to be touched up. I used to do it myself when younger but the colour was always on the red side and it wasn't nice. I pay about £70 every 5 weeks and the colour is spot on.

TheRiverIsAComfort · 16/02/2019 15:57

It's not really my roots, @BigusBumus-it's more single strands of grey here and there.

OP posts:
BigusBumus · 16/02/2019 16:30

That's how mine started too, when I was late 20s I think, just the odd single hair here and there. Now I am 47 and all those hairs have multiplies which is why I now have "roots".

Ask your hairdresser when you next have your hair cut what they could do for you.

megletthesecond · 16/02/2019 16:33

Leave it and go grey. Cheaper and it will suit your skin tone.

BigGreenOlives · 16/02/2019 16:35

I’ve stopped dying mine and am getting loads of compliments, my natural colour works much better with my blue/green eyes than the dyed colour although we were only ever trying to keep my look natural.

Babygrey7 · 16/02/2019 16:41

I have the same problem...

Don't want to dye for just a few hairs, but some days it's so noticeable...

VelociraptorRex · 16/02/2019 16:43

I have a few highlights put through mine every 5 or 6 weeks, doesn't cover the grey but blends it in a bit and softens the contrast.

TheRiverIsAComfort · 16/02/2019 17:14

I don't think it will suit my skin tone, as I'm as white as a sheet...I'll be invisible!

I'm worried about asking the hairdresser, when I'm in a total position of ignorance and will just nod at the first thing that she suggests. I tell myself I won't, that I'll probe for more information and ask to see pictures but, when push comes to shove, I'll just be stupidly meek and mute!!

Ceteum semi perm colour...get the medium or dark brown. Sorted!

PickAChew · 16/02/2019 17:19

I'm as white as a sheet and greying slowly, too. It'll be a long time before you lose the dramatic contrast. I'm 49 and have been greying since my late teens and my hair is only just reaching the point of it looking dark, overall, but still has lots of contrast and a fabulous silver streak in my fringe. Defi itely not invisible.

PickAChew · 16/02/2019 17:20

The pii t of not looking dark, overall.

thedevilinablackdress · 16/02/2019 18:44

Think of them as free highlights, that's what I do 😊

Poirotspen · 16/02/2019 18:59

I too have very dark hair and a smattering of grey. I find the grey sort of clusters in areas. I use this to tackle the worst areas.

It's designed for root touch up and I can get maybe 3 uses out of it (don't make it all up at once). Then I cover the worst bits (mainly the bits at the front that I can see, then ignorance it bliss Grin) . The colour is really close to my own and can't see which strip have been dyed.

CountFosco · 16/02/2019 19:30

You only get roots when you dye your hair, naturally greying hair has variation throughout the hair.

My Mum had black hair and used a semi for a bit in her 50s. She's now in her 70s and is a gorgeous salt and pepper. She has a good cut (she's always had a pixie) and it looks very sophisticated.

Tolleshunt · 16/02/2019 19:37

I have this problem. Any tips for how to dye long hair in your own bathroom without flicking the dye onto the walls? Was an almighty mess last time!

TheRiverIsAComfort · 16/02/2019 23:21

free highlights! Grin

My hair is very dark and my grey is very obvious. I’m using a semi perm colour and it seems to be okay. I think the dye is only doing the grey/lighter hairs anyway.

Grace212 · 16/02/2019 23:36

I have this too and thinking about dyeing or using a semi

thing is I wash my hair daily (running, commuting etc) so a semi won't last long.

I am wondering how a blue tone thingy would work?

I might just leave it, it sounds like years of faff - mum is still dyeing hers at 80. I did think about the Color Wow powder - fellow gym goer uses it and she said to me that it stays put during workouts - don't want it dripping, that could be embarrassing! Like Martin in Frasier when he got some kind of fake hair and sat by a fire and it melted....

ProjectGainsborough · 17/02/2019 09:23

If you’re loathe to go down the dye route, this once or twice a week helps blend. Lovely conditioner too!

lboogy · 17/02/2019 09:27

I think dying grey hair makes your hair thin out. Unless you have thick hair I think you should leave it or use one of those hair mascara sticks

Grace212 · 17/02/2019 17:20

thanks Project

does that conditioner actually put colour on stubborn grey though?

I tried the hair mascara type things and it comes off very easily, plus I always wonder what happens if you get caught in the rain or something. I fiddle with my hair a lot as well, so need something that won't come off. Permanent marker? Grin
