Hair Dye recommendations (suitable for greying roots) to do at home?

Lifeisntadressrehearsal · 14/02/2019 14:33

Hi, I currently go to the hairdressers to get my roots done ( and a cut and blow dry) every 6 to 8 weeks. Closer to appointments, I use the Charles Worthington "Instant Root Concealer Powder" to cover my every greying roots!

I'm trying to cut back on expenditure ( aren't we all) and have come to the conclusion that spending nearly £70 at the hairdressers up to 7 times a year isn't really sustainable Shock.

So am thinking of taking the plunge and doing home hair dying but am worried about dying greying hair and don't want to end up like a badger with some of the dye not taking. Blush or the dyed hair looking a bit rubbish?

My hair is mid-brown.

Has anyone got any recommendations or guidance to give ? Smile

Josh Wood's home colours are very good. And you can customise shades to an extent with his warm/cooler toners. There is a diagnostic tool on his website to help pick the right colour and you can buy online or at larger branches of Boots. They are a bit more expensive than other box brands, but IMO worth it.

Cut out the cut and blow dry every time and go home with a treatment on? Makes it much cheaper. I wouldn’t home dye again as ended up virtually blacked haired which looked awful and showed grey afyet a week and took lots of highlights to fix! Go lighter so you can go longer between colours.

I use nice and easy and it's brilliant. My hair is 80% grey and coarse and it covers it very well. Lasts till roots show again! I'd dye your whole head of hair a shade close to what you have now and then do the roots every time after.

I'm a fan of olia. Doesn't smell and covers well.

NotHeightyButMighty · 14/02/2019 20:16

Olia

I've found Garnier Nutrisse the best, I didn't believe the adverts till I saw Davina using it on her instagram. It really does cover grey, lasts for weeks & doesn't make my hair look like straw.

I use NicenEasy. My friend colours it for me due to my dyspraxia.
I used a Superdrug one once and my hair started smoking. Needless to say I haven't used it again!! 🤣 🤣

I boxed dyed my grey for 18 months. I'd moved and couldn't face finding a hairdresser. I could cover my roots but it wasn't the same as having a hairdresser do it. Current hairdresser has put lighter streaks through hair so roots less visible and doesn't need as much touching up. I wouldn't go back to home dye unless I really had to

I second Josh Wood, I won't use anything else now. I don't know if it's still on but I got two for £10 in Boots a couple of weeks ago

glamorousgrandmother · 14/02/2019 20:49

I've used Nice'n'easy for nearly 20 years when I started getting a few grey hairs. It's easy to use and is one of the cheaper ones.

RockyFlintstone · 14/02/2019 20:51

I used Nice and Easy Medium Brown for years and it never really failed me (I do something different with my hair now).

However, some people don't like the new formula.

If you Google 'Mumsnet Majirel' you will find tonnes of threads about using professional hair colours at home (you can buy them at wholesalers) - they will tell you about base shades and tones and what peroxide to mix with. It sounds complicated at first but I think if you are just doing close to your natural colour it's fairly straightforward.

Thanks ladies for all your helpful advice. Definitely some great ideas here. Grin

I must admit I was thinking of perhaps just getting the roots done at the hairdressers and sorting my hair out at home. I've got shoulder length hair and happy to grow it a bit longer. I'm thinking I don't need to have it cut every time and definitely don't need it blowdrying etc? I'm going to check out the price difference.

I'm going to check out some of your colour recommendations as well. Thanks Smile

I use Olia as it feels a bit more gentle than some of the others. I find it covers well and lasts.

Rhinosaurus · 14/02/2019 22:29

I can tell you the difference at my salon, £32 for a regrowth and home with a treatment on wet hair, £65 for regrowth, cut and blow dry, this is in a small out of town salon. I have a cut and blow dry twice a year as I have long straight hair.

Passthecake30 · 15/02/2019 06:45

I have a home hair dresser do my roots, £20 a time. Is that an option?

glamorousgrandmother · 15/02/2019 09:39

I did my roots this morning with Nice'n'easy. I got up and slapped it on the regrowth (I'm not all that careful as it's almost the same as my natural colour). Left it half an hour while I had breakfast and pottered (it doesn't drip). Put the rest of the mixture on the rest of my hair for five minutes while I hung up the washing. Rinse. Put conditioner on and left it while I brushed my teeth. Shower and rinse hair as normal. Easy.
