This dress for black tie?

Please help, I am a black tie novice. I started a new job 6 months ago and I now have 2 big black tie dinners coming up.

What do you think about the dress attached?

I'm short, size 12 and can't do strapless. If this isn't right have you got any other ideas?

OP I know black tie can include short dresses however I prefer to wear a full length evening gown. ( I don't like to stand out as one of the few wearing a "cocktail" dress to black tie events. Have you asked around re short/long dresses?
Your dress is lovely but it would be a little warm for me.

I'm really struggling to find a floor length dress I like that doesn't look like a bridesmaid dress. I'll have to keep looking. Thanks!

Gorgeous dress! Perhaps a bit too gorgeous for a work do!

Spam88 · 14/02/2019 20:51

I think it's lovely, and short is perfectly fine for black tie.

RockyFlintstone · 14/02/2019 20:53

Love it.

You don't need a long dress for black tie.

ApolloandDaphne · 14/02/2019 20:54

I think it is perfect.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 14/02/2019 20:56

A nice knee length cocktail dress is fine for a work black tie. If you're short then a full length dress is harder to pull off I think.

Assuming the dress in the picture will flatter your figure then it looks fine to me

PuzzlingPuzzle · 14/02/2019 20:57

Gorgeous dress but seconding what Always said- Can you ask other ladies in the office what they typically wear to these events? Whilst shorter is generally ok for black tie and wouldn’t be a huge faux pas, you wouldn’t want to stand out either if everyone else is wearing a full length gown. But seriously love that dress, I’d buy it anyway regardless of whether it works for the events!

Alevel · 14/02/2019 21:11

Thanks all. Lots to think about. I'll ask in the office to see the consensus on length.

I used to go to a lot of black tie events, and most women wore cocktail dresses rather than long dresses.

I love that dress BTW.

Surfingtheweb · 14/02/2019 21:48

Coast is good for black tie dresses & Quiz. I go to lots of these events. A really really successful CEO told me she never wore black to these events, she said it was far better to stand out.
I always go for floor length.

RickOShay · 14/02/2019 21:50

I love the neckline. It’s the right combination of classy and sexy, it’s a yes from me.

Felicia4 · 14/02/2019 21:52

Lovely dress! I would wear that to a black tie event.

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 14/02/2019 22:22

I always thought black tie short white tie long was the standard. So your dress looks lovely.

peachgreen · 15/02/2019 14:42

Lovely. Long dresses at black tie events are overkill and a bit dated imo unless it's an actual "ball". Although having said that I do have a lovely long black dress with a bejwelled neckline which works because it's quite simple.

Bananasarenottheonlyfruit · 15/02/2019 14:45

Agree with others here. Long dresses are OTT for ‘work black tie’. I would only ever wear long dresses to a ball or similar. Even then, most women don’t go full length these days.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 15/02/2019 14:49

I think that dress perfect for work black tie.

I think there will probably be a range but that seems pretty fail-proof to me.

I rarely wear long to black tie-am more comfortable in cocktail dress.

Nice elegant shoes, bag and accessories to complete outfit

RomanticFatigue · 15/02/2019 14:49

Lovely dress. Most of the women wear cocktail dresses to the black tie dos I've been to.
