Holiday make up

I'm of a certain age and can't get away with a no make-up look. I'm going on holiday so want to buy some make up. What should I take? I don't normally wear a lot of make up anyway but need something. Any recommendations for waterproof mascara, a light, waterproof foundation (or should I wear a tinted moisturiser?), eyeliner, etc. Please help - I'm not good with make up!

I swear by Garnier BB cream. A tinted cream that just gives a hint of coverage and banishes my washed out look. I use the medium shade and it adjusts to your skin colour as you get a bit of a tan. From Boots or Superdrug. Not expensive.

I think we are missing vital information here.

Where about are you going and what type of holiday is it? Do you intend to swim a lot?

I am just as at home in a formal dress as being half way up a mountain in a pair of jeans. But the requirements are so different.

Consider getting your eyebrows done (shaped and tinted) and also your eyelashes lifted (curled and tinted).

Both of these are semi permanent (couple of months at most) and less faff whilst in holiday.

The IT Cosmetics Your skin but better CC cream is amazing OP. It is super light and full of anti-aging serum, and makes your skin glowy, but provides an amazing coverage without being visible like a foundation nonetheless. It is also factor 50 SPF, so great for a holiday. Best applied with a foundation stipple type brush. Not the cheapest on the shelf but you use it v sparingly- I've had a tube since October and I've over half left.

Any decent waterproof mascara would be fine- eg No 7.

A blush type lip pencil which can be combined to add a bit of colour to cheeks would be great. Eg Bobbi Brown art stick, or maybelline do a cheaper version.

Then just tint your eyebrows before you go and you are good to go!

Burt's bees do a good nude pink crayon/pencil type thing which us great to define lips and add a hint of colour. My other basics would be foundation (depends on your skin), Nars bronzer (natural looking and a compact lasts forever), Dior overcurl mascara (curls and doesnt clump or smudge), Clinique innocent peach blusher (will take off 5 years).

Another vote for IT cosmetics I have the spf40 oil free Matte and it is really good. Morphe or Kat Von D liquid lipstick lasts all day.

wink1970 · 12/02/2019 21:26

Ooh, nearly 50 here and my holiday kit consists of:

Chanel big bronzer (it’s big but worth it) classed as a primer but really it’s all you need maybe some bare minerals ‘face saver’ which is really a good tinted moisturiser

The Kate wasserfacesupermodel 3-in1 which has a highlighter, lovely apricot blush and subtle brown (I think it’s meant to be a contour but I swirl all 3 for a blusher, use the highlighter on eyes and the blush on the obvious areas). Dead cheap, lasts ages.

A green tinted moisturiser or primer if you use them, dotted on the key areas can tone down any red bits!

I'm 60, and just tend to wear a bit of fake tan on my face and lipstick. I have dark eyelashes and brows and don't need any help there.

woopdewoop · 12/02/2019 21:32

Totally agree re IT cc cream it's fantastic. I like a neutral lip crayon Charlotte t pillow talk or tinted vaseline and nars or benefit hoola bronzer. Evening I add a bit of shadow and eye liner. I have novalash extensions and for me cannot be beaten - you just look made up and your eyes look pretty with no effort all day. I'm 46

wink1970 · 12/02/2019 21:33

Sorry, to add the Kate Moss 3-in1 is Rimmel, it’s brilliant.

I find products aimed at younger people can be great; a friend in marketing said they know the customer has less money therefore the products need to work, ditto men’s products (I can vouch for the Clinique man scrub); so I tend to use ‘young’ products on areas that need to last, and lux on my skin.

Amazing suggestions thank you everyone. I'm going to investigate further and go shopping before my holiday.

I was recommended the Bourjois 123 CC cream on here prior to my holiday a few years ago - it's fairly heat-proof, gives a nice glow and has good but natural-looking coverage. I'm late 40s and it definitely perks up my face. I also bought some darkening drops from MUA (about a fiver) so I could adjust to match my tan (usually fake nowadays). I liked it so much it's become my everyday go-to.

DollyPartonsBeard · 13/02/2019 06:59

Forgot to include eye products- I like the Eyeko Sport waterproof mascara, and Stila waterproof eyeliner (both from M&S beauty boxes), and the Rimmel Scandal Eyes chubby crayons are good, too. They do a nice bronzey brown which gives a bit of definition without looking too heavy. For lips I like the Revlon chubby balm stain crayons.

fedupandnogin · 14/02/2019 14:58

Thanks everyone. I'm going to do some proper grown up make up shopping (I guess it's never too late!)

I am 55 and have a small place in Spain, my absolute must haves are Laura Geller Balance n Glow, applied on its own in Spain, and over The Ordinary Serum Foundation in UK. A dupe of the Bobbi Brown pink shimmer brick for blusher and eyeshadow if needed, and Burts Bees lip shimmer, if more is needed I add a brown eyeliner and mascara.
