Receptionists who have no uniform - what the feck do you wear?!

Just that really. We used to have a "blouse/top" that was provided but a change in supplier and a decrease in quality along with our reluctance to wear crimpolene has meant that we can now wear what we like. Obviously within reason.

I suppose my question is if you wear your "own" clothes to work do you keep specific clothes for work or just wear anything suitable that comes out the wardrobe? I'm wearing towards the second option but worry I'm wrong!
Out of work I tend towards dresses with tights and boots, skirt with fine knit jumper and tights and boots or smart dark jeans with a smart top/blouse?? I would probably steer clear of the jeans option and pick trousers instead?
I've worn a uniform of some type for nearly 30years and yearned for this moment 😂 but am now overwhelmed by choice!

Black trousers with a nice top or a black dress. Jacket if required.

Thanks Flowers. Do you think it has to be a plain black dress? I have a variety of a-line or fit flare/skater type dresses. All knee length or below. Most are patterned though, actually most of them are black backgrounds? I'd probably wear a cardigan as well as it's usually freezing!

I used to dress very smart when I was a receptionist. It was expected as I was the first person clients saw when they came into our office.

Holidayshopping · 11/02/2019 07:51

I’d wear a similar thing to what they used to provide for you.

Calzone · 11/02/2019 07:52

Any colour smart dress would do....

I would probably create myself a small capsule wardrobe for work.
Navy trousers
Navy skirt
Cream top
Jumper
Scarves
Accessories

and rotate them on a daily basis.

Hi HarrySnotter, I should have said that I don't need to be very smart as we're in a GP practice, small rural village. In a way super smart would be easier!

The receptionists in our old rural GP surgery all looked great (I genuinely think they were competing with each other!) and were walking Boden catalogues. I've visited two other surgeries since and I couldn't even tell you what they were wearing - that's self check-in for you!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 11/02/2019 23:11

Not in a GP’s, but the receptionists at my work tend to wear trousers and top, or dress. Always cardigans because they are by the door.

Unrelated to your dilemma, but I keep work and not-work clothes separate. I don’t need to dress formally for work, i just prefer a distinction between the two - if I wear something to work it never gets worn outside work again.

I wear
Trousers black or navy
Tops, jumpers
Jacket or cardigan
I do wear a cowl scarf as where I sit it is drafty.
I usually wear a nice necklace too, no earrings as I can’t have my headset on my head with them in.
