I'm lusting after a pair of these but wonder how easy / hard they are to break in?

They're expensive and I have wide hooves so don't want to regret a purchase!

Find DM Mary Janes are great. Not too bad to break in - I think DMs have improved a bit that way in recent years.

ElfrideSwancourt · 10/02/2019 19:38

My DD has them for school shoes (the ones with 2 buckles) and they are fab. They were soooo much easier to break in than the Clarks brogues she had the year before.

They've never been polished and still look as good as new.

Go for it you won't regret them!

ForkingBullshirt · 10/02/2019 20:18

I have these. They're the best shoes ever! I wear them with everything. Utility type trousers, skirts, skinnies.
They always look amazing and they're super comfortable. They've never even hurt my feet.

PlaymobilPirate · 10/02/2019 20:31

Thanks everyone! Now to see if I can find a decent deal!

I have the version without the yellow stitching, mine are softer leather but I still have to brake them in.

Gina2012 · 10/02/2019 20:36

They look great. But they are quite expensive ( for me)

Herja · 10/02/2019 20:39

I got mine a year ago. They are still not broken in properly because I'm a baby and wouldn't wear them for long enough. I've had a lot of DM's, they always hurt, but this was awful. I keep meaning to brave them again...

TheClitterati · 10/02/2019 20:45

They look good but are the worst pair of DMs I've ever owned. (I've had many pairs of boots and shoes).

Buckle broke after a couple of wears. Very hard leather. Impossible to break in. I still can only wear them with the expensive blister prevention pads.

Nasty shoes.

carr1e1977 · 10/02/2019 20:52

I have 3 pairs, all of which I was able to wear right away. 2 pairs I wear pretty much every day over the summer (last 3 years) and still look good. Mine were bought in the sale

eyestightshut · 10/02/2019 20:52

I were these for work (nurse) and do at least 10000 steps in them a day- super comfortable and didn't really need breaking in ( unlike the other pair of DM's that shredded my feet, made me cry and that got chucked in the bin as I couldn't bear to give them to charity and inflict them on someone else)

ForkingBullshirt · 10/02/2019 21:50

I alao have a pair of the lace dm shoes and they hurt!
My best 'tip' is to buy the cheap gel sticky thinks from primark (£1) They make a barrier between your heel and the leather. Makes breaking them in a doddle!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/02/2019 22:10

I've got these. They took about a fortnight to break in. I highly recommend the DM wax stuff to soften them.

Herja · 11/02/2019 08:37

I'm trying again today!

To break in the back edge of a shoe more quickly you can take a small 'toffee' hammer (just a hammer with a little head), hold the shoe with the back down against a hard surface (the toe sticking straight up towards ceiling) and gently hammer the edge along the stitching. Then flex the leather with your hands to see if it feels softer and if not - do it a bit more.

Tip - Don't do it when you're in pain and angry with the shoes, you'll beat the crap out of them Grin

Paradyning · 12/02/2019 21:21

OMG I used to wear those in the early nineties. Loved them sooo much

ForkingBullshirt · 19/02/2019 19:09

I get so many compliments on these shoes!
How's the breaking in going Herja?
