Can you buy toners like they use in the hairdressers?

So it seems to be the thing to get a toner on top of your colour these days. This takes extra time, extra money and whilst I like the look of it doesn’t last. My hairdresser says they will be moving on toners you put on dry hair soon which means she will have to do my colour, dry off my hair, add the toner then wash and dry again. This seems like a right faff and as I usually spend 3-4 hours already in the hairdressers it isn’t something I want to do.

So can you get toners yourself? Mine is nothing “out there” just a creamy/beige colour. I know you can get purple shampoo etc but that isn’t what I am after. All she seems to do is mix it up and stick it on my head for ten min. It can’t be that hard to do yourself.

Yeah I buy mine from salon direct or you can buy them from Sally’s but they’re more expensive but you can look at colour charts in thetrZ

I use igora royal. You mix it 1:1 ratio with a 10 Vol peroxide and bang it on for 10-20 mins then wash it off. I get my toner done at the hairdressers but I would have to go back for a toner and wash inbetween so this saves me money.

What is the toner for exactly? And if it has peroxide in it, why do you get it when you’ve already had the bleach done? Confused 🤔

I’m really curious about this too. Have grey hair and done previous colours hair growing out. My hairdresser puts on an “ash toner” every 6 weeks but it fades and is gone by week 4. I’d like to do it at home. The silver shampoo is not enough (and hairdresser told me this).

I use 50/50 wella toner (T18 and T11) mixed 2:1 with 10% peroxide.

The peroxide you can buy easily anc cheaply on amazon, but the wella toner is a bugger to get. Not expensive, but you just can't buy it over here, has to be USA and lots of places wont ship it or are out of stock all the time.

I've tried loads of alternatives and nothing tones my hair as well as the above. It's quite annoying!

Bigonesmallone3 · 09/02/2019 17:38

I always get mine from eBay

IStillMissBlockbuster · 09/02/2019 17:40

Interesting, how can you tell what exact shade you need though?

Mojitomogul · 09/02/2019 17:47

If you have bleach highlights, you usually can't go wrong with a 9.13 toner, this is a light ash gold blonde, the 1 is the ash which takes out any warm orange in the hair, and the 3 is gold which keeps it a nice natural warmth. The 9 is the level, if you want slightly darker blonde go for a 7 or 8. This is if you use a loreal based toner like dialight or diarichesse. Cheaper option is sallys trade shop own brand XP100, bigger bottles and same colour chart, go for the natural radiance semi permanent range and mix it with a 9% peroxide. Very easy to do once you know the mixing quantities , and make sure to apply evenly, and the shop assistants can always help you out picking a shade from the shade charts.

Thanks so much mojito. If I get the L’Oréal dialight am I supposed to mix it with something? Am I getting out of my depth here? Dont want to wreck my hair.

U mix it with peroxide x

Frequency · 11/02/2019 18:05

Use 1.9%. There is no need to tone with 9%. Doing so will cause unnecessary damage to your hair and also lift your natural colour leaving it brassy. 1.9% is for deposit only. 9% is for lifting and depositing.

There is a reason it takes three years to qualify as a hairdresser. It's way more complicated than mixing two things together and pouring it on your head. What level are your highlights? What tones are you trying to eliminate? What tones do you want?

If you put a 9.13 on level 10 highlights they will go green.

Mojitomogul · 11/02/2019 18:44

Oo yes sorry frequency i wrote this but hungover Grin, meant 10 or 12 vol not 9%. 9 % would be too strong. But 9.13 has never gone green on highlights that i have done, they come out a lovely beige natural blonde. If the hair is a light level 10 i would use a 10 level toner or luo p01 p02 mix. This is why the girls in Sallys are quite useful they will help you determine the level you need OP. Its more complicated than you think but a toner isn't rocket science and as long as you mix correctly and don't go too far warm or ashy you'll be fine.

Mojitomogul · 11/02/2019 18:46

And yes if you choose dialight get the 6 or 9 volume peroxide that is called dia-activator. Depending on how thick your hair is you will probably need two tubes as you want to saturate the hair Xx

Frequency · 11/02/2019 20:18

Does Loreal not do a 1.9%? 10 vol is still quite harsh for bleached hair. Do you use P01 often, Moji? I have a client wanting her full head bleach white. We have discussed photoshop/unrealistic expectations etc and I still cannot get it white enough for her. She's a level 10. I normally tone with Colour Touch 10.6 and a dash of 8.81 but it's not white enough for her.

I looked at PO1 as an option but the idea of using 25 vol on already damaged hair sends shudders down my spine. I was going to try Guy Tang's new colour range next time I toned her.

RuggyPeg · 12/02/2019 08:24

I'm about to try a loreal age perfect beautifying colour care one in beige. I don't particularly have high hopes but let's see. I'm picking it up later today. I hammer the purple shampoo usually but thought I'd try something a bit different.
