How much would these items be in your local charity shop?

How much roughly would the following items be in your local charity shop? Prices in brackets are what they are in mine. I left these items behind today as felt they were over priced. Do you agree? I live in a pretty affluent area in the south, not London.

Makes me think, would it be better for charity shops to charge less? Would they make more profit overall? Or would it put people off donating good quality goods if they felt they were being sold too cheap?

  • Jigsaw dress - good condition but not new (£20)
  • Reiss shirt - good condition but not new (£15)
  • cashmere jumper. Some bobbles (£15)

Jigsaw dress - good condition but not new £8

  • Reiss shirt - good condition but not new £8

Sausagefingers9 · 07/02/2019 20:49

Dress would be around £10, shirt and jumper around £5.

MyDcAreMarvel · 07/02/2019 20:49

Sorry Reiss shirt not dress would be £4

BartonHollow · 07/02/2019 20:55

I work in a charity shop in my free time the highest priced clothing items are £6.50 and in my view THAT'S too steep esp. if used or faded

The high end brands eg Laura Ashley or Hobbs will be £6.50

Anything high street £3-4.50

£15 for USED?! Having a giraffe, blimey

BikeRunSki · 07/02/2019 21:01

Dress £5-12 depending if they realised that Jigsaw was a desirable brand.

Shirt - £2-8 depending if they recognised the desirability of Reiss

Jumper -£5-8

Bakingberry · 07/02/2019 21:05

I find the prices in the charity shops near me vary dramatically. I usually just look at the books. I found a book in one charity shop for £1.50. In another it was closer to £10.

Livedandlearned · 07/02/2019 21:14

In our area, Oxfam is the most expensive charity shop.

Moominfan · 07/02/2019 21:16

One I visit everything is 1.50 it's a donation point for Barnardo’s. Bloody love the place. Have got lamb wool jumpers, merino wool, all saints leather jacket, cos jumper and my favourite find was a Laura Ashley tea dress that I wear to death

PrismGuile · 07/02/2019 21:58

Similar but it's way overpriced. Found a nice but well worn brown leather midi skirt the other day - score thinks I, £95! Fuck no

PrismGuile · 07/02/2019 22:00

Wasn't even a we'll known brand they're just chancing it. It's sad because I don't earn much and like a treat but buying new from DP or New Look is cheaper than the C shops found my work 😔

Tentomidnight · 07/02/2019 22:08

Is this in an Oxfam by any chance? My local Oxfam charges ridiculously high prices for well used mediocre stuff.
Other local charities charge less than 1/3 of the price for similar items.

Doonut84 · 08/02/2019 07:21

No not Oxfam
I find Cancer Research and BHF most expensive round here

Notcontent · 08/02/2019 08:49

About the same OP. I am in London.

I still like to go and have a rummage around, but I now only buy things if I really love them and they are in very good condition.

VanillaSauce · 08/02/2019 10:18

I doubt you'd even see Reiss, Jigsaw or cashmere in my local charity shop. M&S is the most 'designer' item you'd see round here.

Willowtreecottage · 08/02/2019 11:06

Cancer research are way over priced here too!
The staff only need to sniff a minuscule amount of cashmere, and a worn and bobbiling cardigan can demand £ 10- 12

Floisme · 08/02/2019 14:06

Yeh prices have gone up a lot round here (not London):

Jigsaw dress - I've seen two this week, both worn, both £12.99.
Reiss shirt - probably £6-£8, more if silk.
Cashmere - about £5-£8 (except for the swankiest shop where I've seen supermarket cashmere for £15).

I totally get that it's their job to make as much money as they can, not keep me supplied with bargains. However, if I'm not sure about something and it's under £10, I'll normally take a punt and, if it's not right, re-donate it, so they get to sell it twice. But if it's over a tenner I'm much fussier. So they may be missing a trick - depends on how many other shoppers do the same.

ScreamingValenta · 08/02/2019 14:13

There's a lot of variation between the different shops I go in, but I'd expect similar to BikeRunSki.

I recently saw an F&F t-shirt dress going for £5 - fair enough if it had been in good condition, but it was bobbled to death!

Changingagain · 08/02/2019 14:14

The charity shops differ hugely round here. There's one where I've bought a pile of stuff (couple of kids clothing, some toys and some books) a couple of times and they just say that'll be £2, they don't even look at what it is.
There's another that only sells kids things which I used to support as it really helped struggling parents in the area. Then it got a new manager and they now price second hand toys at more than the toy shop round the corner sells them new Shock

Bombardier25966 · 08/02/2019 15:06

Big variations here too, and the trendier the area the higher the prices.

The Oxfam online shop has some ridiculous prices, into the thousands!

BubblesBuddy · 08/02/2019 16:28

Surely that’s a typo? It’s not a designer.

I think some of you are a bit stingy. It depends if you support recycling or unethically sourced new clothes made in sweat shops. Your choice of course. In an affluent area the prices would be as stated. In a former pit village, probably not.

LanaorAna2 · 08/02/2019 20:35

Inner London here:

Prices would vary hugely for the same pieces, so:

  • Jigsaw dress - good condition but not new
TRINITY HOSPICE SHOP - £30 SALVATION ARMY - £7
  • Reiss shirt - good condition but not new
TRINITY HOSPICE SHOP- £13-17 SALVATION ARMY - £4.50
  • cashmere jumper. Some bobbles
TRINITY HOSPICE SHOP - £28 SALVATION ARMY - £5
slappinthebass · 08/02/2019 20:39

Varies massively. I got a bundle of All Saints clothes for £1 each recently in one. Some of the cheaper ones often have bobbly Primark things for more than they would have cost new. But Oxfam in the city centre is expensive. It's more a vintage boutique though.

XingMing · 08/02/2019 20:50

Locally, I don't bother trawling the Oxfam clothing store, but the bookshop is far better than any of the new bookshops in town. More stock, and a better variety. The food shelf is particularly good and they have had treasures they didn't recognise as rare and sought after titles. If I don't want to buy it, I do tell them when they are underpricing because it's where book dealers do their trawls for first/limited editions .

fashiondevotee · 08/02/2019 21:01

London here, I think LanaorAna2 has got it spot on. Royal Trinity Hospice shops are always the nicest to browse, but they're sooooo overpriced.

Haworthia · 08/02/2019 21:02

The prices you quoted would be about right in my local Cancer Research shop, which is the most expensive one I know of.
