Anyone take a supplement to help their hair, nails and skin?

If so, what do you take?

I eat pretty healthily and drink plenty of water, but my skin always seems to look knackered. I am knackered, but wondered if it's worth trying to give it a helping hand.

I have been taking Tati's Halo Beauty one - costs a fortune, and I have to import it to Australia, but it's doing wonders. (Bloody kills me to admit it, but it's fabulous. I have tried fudging similar ingredients to get the same results, but it's more expensive that way.). I'm 46 and perimenopausal and have hypothyroidism and my hair was falling out in clumps. I'm also taking megadoses of vitamin D on top of it. This has stopped and the bald spots have filled in. It is definitely this product that has resolved this issue, as I tried going without it for a month, and it started again.

Crikey xing take it down a notch mate.

@nevernotstruggling

I get my biotin from Holland & Barrett it's usually on half price - think it was about £7.50 for 100 tablets

nevernotstruggling · 10/02/2019 08:26

@unicornsarereal1 hey thanks I'm definitely trying it!

Just eat really well... please. Set a good model for your children, and you will all be healthier. Five or more portions of fruit/veg daily, non-refined carbs, quality proteins, oily fish twice a week (preferably more), sensible portions and none of you will be overweight, you will have great skin, nails and hair apart from hormonal issues/changes. T'ain't rocket science; it's just how humans are supposed to eat.

Woah there @XingMing . If you read my OP you'll see that I do eat healthily etc so please don't make assumptions. Nor did I say at any point that I am overweight. I most definitely don't get enough sleep - having a child with complex medical needs sees to that - and since the menopause my hair and skin are most definitely not up to scratch anymore and I asked for advice on a little extra help to make me feel better. So shoot me.

A child with complex needs and the menopause would definitely exacerbate the effects of sleep deprivation. HRT might help, but I've never been sold on supplements, except for B12 and magnesium which are both thought to help aid sleep and cell renewal. Apologies for the tone: I read your OP in haste, and responded without too much thought.

My mum swore by HRT from 50 onwards and refused to stop taking it until she was 70, but is still pretty robust at 84. Her bone density and general health are a lot better than most ladies of comparable vintage that I know.

Corrag - you literally made me laugh out loud. I scrolled down after your first comment and was absolutely shocked to see the response you got

expatmigrant · 11/02/2019 17:37

Xingming (or is that name and surname Wink
Not every women is menopausal by 50 so would have no need for HRT.
I am 54, slim, exercise (high cardio and resistance), eat healthy and I'm still as regular as clock work every 28 days, so no hope of that finishing any day soon. I've never taken vitamins or supplements.
However, in the last few years my hair has thinned and my nails are shit so like OP I'm looking for any help and suggestions for improvements.

HarrySnotter · 11/02/2019 18:39

My MIL swears by HRT but my GP will not prescribe it due to the amount of breast cancer in my family.

I believe there are some issues with viviscal. As far as I’m aware, they use shark cartilage in it and the harvesting of it is really cruel. I’m not a veggie/vegan but deliberate cruelty feels unnecessary, plus there are major issues with taking apex predators out of the food chain.

Just a google hit, not the most scientific article there is but for info.

@dartitus I was a bit taken aback I must admit. Perhaps I deserved it for being flippant about my health and responsibilities Cake Gin

Pinkginxx · 11/02/2019 21:53

I drink a bottle of collegan+ beauty milk for breakfast. Kinda bought it on a whim, then carried on because I loved the taste, but now I'm hooked as it's made such a noticeable difference to my skin.
It's £1 odd a day, but I justify it as a breakfast smoothie...
