Please help (pics attached) - thought I had fab wedding hat but it’s gone wrong... 😔

Hello!

I’m off to a winter wedding soon and really wanted to wear a hat. I can’t afford a full price one and love a bit of vintage/cheeky bargain anyway - found one in a charity shop that was the perfect colour match for my dress. It arrived and I thought I was all sorted. However, I’ve just realised that I’m wearing it totally the wrong way. I wanted to wear it Kate Middleton style, on the side of my head, but have just noticed that there’s a proper dome shape to the hat and I I think it’s probably supposed to be worn centrally at the back of the head (as it was designed in the 80s). If I wear it at the side, there’s a dome-shaped gap (if that makes sense!).

Having Googled it, it seems that all the other hats/fascinators that are flying saucer-style are flat. Is there any hope for me with this hat or would it just look totally ridiculous if I wore it at an angle?

Only helpful comments, please! Thank you in advance.

Hat looks FAB!
Are you asking which way it should be worn?
If so, pic 1 or 2. Flower on the side,

Can you show us what you mean? Like how you intended to wear it? I am not sure what you mean from the pictures.

Thank you for your replies, Coat and Kavv. Intended to wear it at an angle as in the pictures, but when I do so there is a gap. If I wore it centrally and pushed right back (like a bowler hat!) my head would fill the gap, iyswim? Here are a few of the Google pics I found - the hats are much flatter? I’m worried I’m going to look like I’m wearing the hat in totally the wrong place on my head (but it looks awful centrally/a long way back!)...

I’m wondering if the middle of the hat should ‘fit’ to the crown (to try and explain
a little more)...

The hat looks fab and you are wearing it correctly in pic no.1

Starfish83 · 04/02/2019 18:29

Thanks elephant! So it doesn't matter that the hat is sitting on top of my head as opposed to my head 'filling' it?!

Oh do you mean that the part of the hat your head is meant to go in (the 'bowl') isn't filled with your head when you wear it to the side? I'm sorry but I think it might look a bit odd as you'd see the gap when standing behind you?

elephantoverthehill · 04/02/2019 18:54

You don't need to 'fill the bowl'. When a man wears a bowler/top/ pork pie hat his head doesn't fill the bowl.

Starfish83 · 04/02/2019 18:58

Yes, that’s what I mean, lewk. Oh, thank you elephant - so glad I can go ahead with my plan to wear it. 😊

Treat yourself to a hat pin to complete the look. They are often to be found in charity shops, usually you have to ask because they are sharp. Wink

Starfish83 · 04/02/2019 19:02

Great idea, thank you! 😀

Can you fill the gap by wearing your hair up?

Starfish83 · 04/02/2019 19:14

Hmmm, I could, Count. I was planning on going for a very low side ponytail, softly curled, as my dress is quite plain and formal (compared to my usual style) and I think this would soften the look a little.

If it is a felt hat which it looks as though it ma be, you can reshape the crown by steaming it. This involves a kettle and usually pudding bowls.

Starfish83 · 04/02/2019 19:36

elephant, I did wonder if something like this was possible but I think I’d be scared it could go wrong! 😬 Thanks for the suggestion.
