A good body moisturiser for dry skin

Lottiebugz22 · 04/02/2019 15:07

My skin is rough and dry post pregnancy. I've tried palmers cocoa butter, the body shop body butter almond one and aveeno and its still rough. I also exfoliate twice a week.

What do you wash yourself with?

peoplearepeople · 04/02/2019 15:39

Shower oils are often really good. The l'occitane almond one is popular but I think the dove version is also pretty decent if you want something cheaper and is half price in superdrug. www.superdrug.com/Toiletries/Washing-%26-Bathing/Shower-Gels-%26-Body-Wash/Dove-Nourishing-Care-In-Shower-Argan-Oil-200ml/p/708426?gclid=CjwKCAiA4t_iBRApEiwAn-vt-0elCnCv3zo9zWKdjRk461iaDwBv_FUiH8Y_OqwIHm3oGnMV4r1U8xoCjEUQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

After shower I would also recommend a dry oil or neutrogena deep moisture body lotion. Smile Pure almond oil is also great if applied to damp skin at night.

peoplearepeople · 04/02/2019 15:40

Forgot the link for the neutrogena lotion I find good. They also do a version with oil in it, but it's not so easy to find. www.amazon.co.uk/Neutrogena-Norwegian-Formula-Moisture-Sensitive/dp/B00GHNYPY6/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?keywords=neutrogena+body&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1549294586&sr=8-3

I have very dry sensitive skin. I switched to Dove soap to cut down on plastic and am amazed at the change to my skin , softer than ever. I use Neutrogena sensitivevlotion or the new one in the blue bottle - hydro skin or something. I also use a soap and glory exfoliating glove in each shower

FairyAnn · 04/02/2019 15:45

I always put a few drops of baby oil in my bath which really helps with my dry skin

moreismore · 04/02/2019 15:48

Diprobase. Unglamorous but very good! Or E45 cream (not lotion)

Sausagefingers9 · 04/02/2019 15:50

Oil oil oil!
Oil in your bath and then oil up after the bath. Your skin will be baby smooth.

Caggie09 · 04/02/2019 16:02

I use the Superdrug dry skin cream, its in a tub. Aldi £1 body lotion isnt bad either. When you get out the shower though, make sure you moisturise quickly to keep some of the water in!

Lottiebugz22 · 04/02/2019 17:10

I use baby wash from boots 😂 not very glamorous I know...
Thanks for everyones suggestions. I have some baby oil I'll try that in the bath and might try dove soap that's cheap and cheerful.

Be careful with oil in the bath OP. I'm sure you are already aware can be slippery, hence why I've only used it once!

EngagedAgain · 04/02/2019 17:22

Think the almond oil on damp skin at night sounds good. Forgot who mentioned that beginning of thread?

Grapetree · 04/02/2019 17:24

Cerave cream
Contains ceramides and petroleum which have been proven to decrease tewl. Also fragrance free so great for sensitive skin

Oils or lotions are not proven to be as effective at sealing moisture in the skin as heavier creams or ointments, although they will make your skin feel softer

Also, make sure to apply your moisturiser straight after coming out the shower - if you wait longer than 5 mins before applying your skin will start to dry out

Central heating dries out the skin too
Also, eating enough healthy fats may help

(I have severe eczema, and regularly see a dermatologist)

lolaflores · 04/02/2019 17:26

E45. There is a spray mist one that wonderful. I will never use anything else.nthe difference in my wrinkly 59 year old skin is noticeable. And when I don't use it it's noticable

Caggie09 · 04/02/2019 17:28

@Grapetree, i went to a dermatologist ans just got palmed off with more steriods. Asked to get a allergy test but said cant test for everything. I think nuts trigger mine. Do you notice any food things that trigger yours?

sorry to butt in OP!

Amber0685 · 04/02/2019 17:32

Cetraben lotion, not very glamorous but really good if you use it every day. It is about £10 for a 500ml pump bottle.

Grapetree · 04/02/2019 21:32

caggie do you have eczema or dry skin? Also, did you see the derm privately or via NHS? My gp said allergy testing is very limited under NHS hence why I chose to go private

I initially asked for allergy tests from my dermatologist as I was desperate for an answer but she explained although she wouldn’t mind doing them, it was unlikely I’d get the results I was hoping for. Therefore, I didn’t bother in the end. There is not strong enough research to suggest foods cause eczema, limited studies show foods may exacerbate eczema for some but that’s about it

I had previously tried plenty of “clean eating” and elimination diets when my eczema was severe, (no sugar / dairy / gluten, drinking kefir and celery juice daily etc) but honestly hadn’t noticed much difference

If you’re interested I really recommend visiting this for plenty of recent studies on eczema www.nottingham.ac.uk/research/groups/cebd/resources/eczema-systematic-reviews.aspx

Sorry to ramble and derail the thread op haha!
@caggie09 - I could give you some more tips on what has helped improve my eczema if you’d like, just didn’t want my post to be super long
I used to have very severe patches of eczema (lichenification and staph infections)

Caggie09 · 04/02/2019 21:56

@Grapetree, yes its Eczema. Had on and off my whole life! Dermo was through NHS, had a few appointments and didnt really get anywhere.

Looked at private, seems very costly. But i am deseprate to know whats causing this. Havent eaten nuts for a while now and it hasnt been so bad. Need to stop the scratch cyle though and dont want to keep using steriods on my face either!

Will give the link a read. Its bloody awful and ive cried a few times at the state of my skin. Think ill push for an allergy test if i flare up in the next week or so! Thanks for your reply though!
