Big Pesky Spots!

Can anyone suggest something to help these spots? I used to get one spot a month, which was a little thing which quickly went on it’s own. I’m perimenopausal now seem to go through moths of clear skin but the last 3 months I’ve been getting these pesky things. They actually hurt!

I’ve been using La Roche-Posay system and also sudacream, as that usually works. It’s not touching these.

Any suggestions?

What's your skin like generally? Is it sensitive/oily/tough as old boots (mine!)?

I use some good products but I'm wary of recommendations as my skin isn't typical.

teta · 03/02/2019 14:29

My daughter gets those and is currently on a oral antibiotic plus Azeleic acid. She’s 19 though and not keen on hormonal therapy such as the Pill. These chin deep rooted spots are caused by hormones and very few things you use topically will make a difference . Go see your gp to see what they suggest at first. You can buy prescription products online without going to see your gp as well. I ordered my daughter Azeleic acid as her Epiduo didn’t seem to be helping and then her Gp was happy to carry on prescribing it.

Morty my skin has a greasy t zone and the rest is dry.

I’ll google that acid Tera, thanks for the recommendation.

Watch Dr Sam Buntings Youtube.

Personally for those I'd see a GP and get Duac.

If you can't , in the meantime get Acnecide from superdrug.

You should join " Dr Sam Buntings Skincare Club " on facebook :)

Hyrdrocolloid spot plasters could be great for these too you can get them on amazon, the cheapest pack is around £6

LizzieSiddal · 03/02/2019 18:53

Thanks for all the recommendations. I’d never thought to look on YouTube for help.

I'm also in peri and get random annoying spots. I use this:

haeckels.co.uk/product/spot-treatment/

I just rub a little on the spot before bed and by morning, it is vastly improved. It's the first spot cream I've ever used that is really gentle (and all natural) but does the job every time.

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/02/2019 20:14

Drs, I had a sudden outbreak of spots last year and faffed around. Now I’ve got about a dozen red scars and I’m seeing dermatology in 2 weeks time.

The fact they hurt suggests they’re not going to respond to otc remedies.

Don’t make my mistake. At one point I had 26 spots like yours all over my face. Bit of a shock at 41.

BangingOn · 03/02/2019 21:12

A-thera peeling stick and Cosrx pimple patches have sorted out my stubborn chin spots, amazing products.

namechangedforanon · 03/02/2019 21:26

Hundred - "all natural " isn't a selling point really - many natural products can be hugely irritating according to both Dr Bunting and Dr Dray

teta · 03/02/2019 21:45

Spot plasters and the like will not work on those spots. Only antibiotics or hormonal treatments will work. Azeleic acid will work on cystic spots and reduce the inflammation but it will take time.

HundredMilesAnHour · 03/02/2019 21:47

"all natural " isn't a selling point really

It's a selling point to me. The fewer chemicals being pumped into the environment the better. You don't have to agree, we're all entitled to our own opinions. But in 30+ years of suffering with acne, this is the most effective product that I've used that is also gentle on my skin. And the green credentials (and lack of animal testing) also matter to me.

Oldtiger · 03/02/2019 22:18

I am a similar age to you and this could e my chin though I get pustules and blackheads too. I got duac ( benzoyl peroxide & clarithromycin) prescribed last week and oh my goodness, 1 dose and 18 hours later my skin is bright red, itching and filled with hundreds of tiny raised bumps. 48 hrs on and it’s not much better despite moisturiser. About 1in 10 react like this to the benzoyl peroxide component. I totally forgot I reacted like this as a teenager.
I’d rather try zineryt (erythromycin and zinc) again or azelaeic acid

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/02/2019 22:31

I can’t use benzoyl peroxide creams either. Couldn’t use them 20 years ago, still can’t now.

frugalkitty · 03/02/2019 23:11

I get these and they're an absolute bugger. Like a couple of other posters I can't use anything with benzoyl peroxide in which limits topical products. DS is ok with it but I'm taking my DD to the Dr in a couple of weeks as her skin is bad all over, and she has reactive skin like mine so I'm not sure what they'll suggest. Sympathies OP, I'm not sure what to suggest as if I'm honest, I've not found anything to get rid of them sadly.

Try giving up dairy for a while. I realised it was triggering my spots and thought I’d give it a go after reading some articles. It worked for me.
I just have almond, coconut and oat milk now which is fine but I miss cheese.

LizzieSiddal · 04/02/2019 08:28

Well they’ve started to come to a head this morning. Well when I say “a” head I mean about 4 little heads in each spot Envy.
They are bloody painful and I know a squeeze will ease the pressure but am trying to resist.

I’ve had a look at Sam Bunting videos and found her really informative so have a list of products to order today. I also now know I’ve been over stimulating my skin with face masks and exfoliates and splashing with cold water is a no, no.

Charles, I don’t each much dairy at all but am glad avoiding it worked for you.
Thanks for all your help everyone!

Honestly Dr Sams advice changed my skin

No fragranced products
No oils
No balm cleansers
No double cleansing
No powder makeup
No long wear foundation
No Ott acid tonight

Yes to a basic simplistic routine
Retinoids
Niacinamide
Sunscreen
Moisturizer
Gentle cleanser at low ph

If required
BP if tolerated
Az acid

Spot patches are a good tool to prevent picking / touching wether they work or not for some people :)

I found Duac to be incredible for me

namechangedforanon · 06/02/2019 09:09

Oooh and

No scrubs , cleansing brushes , devices or clothes !

LizzieSiddal · 06/02/2019 17:43

Namechange, I hope she does the same for me.

On her advice I've bought a few things and will see how I go, I have Acnecide and if it doesn't work, Duac is my next step.

OP posts:
Oldtiger · 06/02/2019 21:59

Just be careful OP, 5 days on after just one 1/2 fingertip application of duac and my skin is still raised red and bumpy and now starting to peel despite twice daily gentle moisturiser. I would patch test an area under your chin for 24 hrs before using

namechangedforanon · 06/02/2019 23:50

What percent Duac ? Key with it is to use the tiniest amount .

I only ever used 5% .

I'd also recommend joining the Dr Sam Bunting skincare club on fb . Very knowledgeable group

Oldtiger · 07/02/2019 09:20

5%
I used probably 1/2 of a small finger tip
amount. I’ll look at that FB group thanks
