Terribly dry cuticles and skin around nails

Can anyone recommend a really good hand cream or oil that I can use on my awful dry, ragged and hard cuticles and skin around my nails.
I’ve started picking and tearing the skin and it’s just hardening up more and more. The more I pick, the worse it gets and my nails and skin around them now look disgusting.
I’ve had a gel polish done today to try and strengthen my very poor nails but the hangnails and cuticles just spoil them.

Recommend me a miracle product please 💅🙏

Loccitaine lavender hand cream (although I have some different scented ones too), I have eczema and this is the only thing that helps. The winter weather makes my hands bleed and this really hits the spot!

Almond oil to massage in around your nails, I'm sure Boots will sell it. Also Crabtree & Evelyn have some lovely hand therapy packs/kits.

CND solar oil. Rub into cuticles and around nails every day.

I like Aveeno hand cream too, keep that on my desk at work and apply every time i wash my hands.

Try some Marula oil (Holland and Barrett will have it) and massage into cuticles and dry areas on your hands several times a day.

Lots and lots hancream - keep in bathroom and by sink so every time you wash your hands you moisturise them.
My favourite is Jurlique rose but a treat
Trilogy Rosehip oil into cuticles twice daily.
Gloves always when outside in winter.

I use Kiehls lip balm or Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream. The lip balm is in a very small tube so hand bag friendly. A couple of times a day I just get a small bit and massage around cuticles. Both very good at getting rid of ragged cuticles.

Snowfire oitment - google it. My local independant chemist which always seems to have different but great stuff recommended it. Smell a bit like citronella but makes a real difference overnight.

ChishandFips33 · 03/02/2019 09:22

Elizabeth Arden 8hr cream
Aveeno
Body Shop hemp

It could also be dietary - might be worth a Google to see if a vitamin deficiency is at play.

I get this but only sporadically - no external conditions that would spark it so I always put it down to my diet at the time

ChishandFips33 · 03/02/2019 09:23

...and yes, so so tempting to pick...and keep picking whilst you tell yourself you just trying to pick til you reach a smooth spot whilst creating grooves in your fingers

Anything with urea in. When I was blasting my feet with Flexitol Heel Balm my hands were amazing.

When we lived in Germany there was an incredibly cheap hand cream that was 10% urea - best thing I've ever used.

CutesyUserName · 03/02/2019 09:31

Solar oil will help.

Lotsofsausage · 03/02/2019 09:40

I get this and I clip it all off using nail clippers and cuticle trimmers ! When you’ve had a bath it’s reallt easy to get rid of it.

SureIusedtobetaller · 03/02/2019 09:42

I pick at my cuticles when I’m stressed and it escalates- vicious circle really.
I have rose hip oil so will start today.

Ukelou · 03/02/2019 10:19

If you have just had gel polish be careful the handcream doesn't have lanolin in it, as this breaks down gel polish so your lovely new nails wont last as long. If you have gel polish you need to use cuticle oil at least once a day this will obviously help with your cuticles and make the gel last longer.

CountessConstance · 03/02/2019 10:34

Did not know that about gel polish Ukelou thank you.

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/02/2019 20:23

Solar oil is best for my skin.

lotusbell · 03/02/2019 20:30

Loads of Vaseline or thick hand cream and a pair of those thin cotton gloves overnight for a few nights. I work in a warehouse and need to wash my hands a lot, usually in cold water. My fingers have never been so cracked, very dry cuticles and hang nails. Also, don't underestimate wearing gloves when out and rubber gloves when washing up

Alwaysaware · 03/02/2019 21:24

Amazing replies, thanks so much all, I really have to stop picking as my fingers get quite painful and bleed. It’s purely stress related so I should tackle the source really. I just can’t bear to feel a little dry bit, off it has to come but then a little more appears 😏

They wouldn’t be so sore if I’d stop picking at them!
Have just put Flexitrol Heel balm on them - will let know if that helps Grin

Alwaysaware · 04/02/2019 08:33

I’ve ordered snowfire ointment, solar oil and a nourishing handcream. I’m determined to have nice looking fingers and hands.

I pop one of sally hansen cuticle rehab tubes in the car and then at lights I use it.
