Hi lve dark blonde hair and my parting has most off my grey hair just there so l get blonde highlights to hide the Grey's ,but after two years it's been getting blonder and blonder and now it's looks just blonde mainly, but it's costing me £160 each time for my highlights and a trim so very expensive ,l stretch it out to about ten weeks ,as l don't mind too much the dark rooted look, but lve asked a few times wouldn't be kinder to my hair to have an all over colour but my hairdresser never answers me directly and hedges around it l think she'd make less money just doing a full colour instead,so lm wanting advise please what's cheaper what's healthier and kinder to my hair ,highlights with foils ora full head colour, and if l changed from foils to a full colour cannot be done over my bleached hair safely please help as lm due to have it done very soon and need some options on what to do, thanking you in advance ,SkinnyKay

Jeez you pay a lot! I pay about £60 for highlights and a cut.

HisBetterHalf · 01/02/2019 17:51

All over colour ends up with huge dark roots- more noticeable than with highlighted hair

Bombardier25966 · 01/02/2019 17:57

Are you able to do it yourself? I had highlights for years, but now do a full colour myself. That means I can do it as often as I like, and I can change the colour about.

You can buy professional colours online, they're better for avoiding brassiness. Although I currently use a mix, Nice n Easy Light Ash Blonde followed by a Dialight Milkshake shade, which varies according to mood!

Bombardier25966 · 01/02/2019 17:58

(* The shade I use varies, my hair doesn't change colour according to my mood 😊)

Bombardier25966 · 01/02/2019 17:59

You'd need to check which works for grey coverage, pretty sure Dialight doesn't. The staff at Sally's are very helpful if you've got one nearby.

I am contemplating an all over colour for same reason. I want my own colour though and have very few greys at the moment.

Sarahandduck18 · 01/02/2019 18:09

£160 every 10 weeks is crazy money!

Buy a box.

ooooohbetty · 01/02/2019 18:09

Go to a cheaper hairdresser that will do what you want. I have highlights and an all over tint because highlights stopped covering the grey. Those two plus a cut and blow dry costs me £50.

SkinnyKay · 01/02/2019 18:09

I'm worried for my hair has snapped off in the past due to bleaching so has taken me two years to regrow,l pay that to get olaplex added to bleach to prevent further damage my hair has become so thin now ,and once extremely thick ,lve had so many hair disasters to date so only concerned for the future health off my hair.

I've tried cheaper hairdressers or shouldn't say hair Messer's for they caused me so much distress was a mess and broke lost six inches in length alone and didn't want it short it's went from being at my bra strap in the middle off my back to a bob sitting above my shoulders because l tried to get it cheaper so not always the best thing to do.good hairdressers are expensive just.

I get half head highlights at one visit and then alternate every 8 weeks with partial highlights just in the top section which works out slightly cheaper on the second visit. Would this be an option?

fancynancyclancy · 01/02/2019 18:45

I spend that but can stretch it to 12 weeks plus. My highlight colour is quite ashy so that blends with my dark blond roots & bits of grey & then the hairdressers balayage’s some patches to break up the colour at the bottom of that makes sense.

ooooohbetty · 01/02/2019 18:57

I've been to both. I used to pay a lot but found that the price made no difference. A good hairdresser is a good hairdresser and they can work in expensive salon or backstreet cheap salons. I eventually felt that a lot of the price for the expensive salons was for high business rates and rent, fancy vibrating chairs and good coffee. Ive been getting my hair bleached and dyed for 40 years and it's never broken off. I think you should go somewhere else for a second opinion if you're concerned about it. Hope you get sorted.

Maybe ask for coverage over your white roots (in your natural dark blonde colour) and then balyage in lighter blonde. The blonde won’t need redoing as much.

MoltonSilver · 01/02/2019 20:23

My sister had the same dilemma and went for the all over colour. It was a disaster. It look a long time to grow it out. She's back to the highlights now.

Thistles24 · 01/02/2019 22:35

I have an all over colour then something called “stretched roots highlights” which looks like baylayage to me. It’s a semi permemant colour they use, so it fades rather than leaving me with a stripe where it grows out, and no need to have highlights done every 10 weeks with that style either.

Dowser · 01/02/2019 22:53

£22 for me...every 8 weeks
I love my blonde highlights...I’m in the same boat as you op

Loads of brown hair, blonde and grey stragglers

Strongbeatsskinny · 02/02/2019 11:08

Why don’t you just tell her to use a few different shades running through your hair. I have three different shades easy enough for any skilled hairdresser to do.
