Wedding / engagement ring question

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 31/01/2019 19:08

I've put on weight and my wedding ring no longer fits. As it's yellow gold I'm thinking of taking the opportunity to change it and I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on if I should go for white gold or palladium (platinum is probably out of the price range). If it's white gold should I go for 9ct or 18ct?

My engagement ring is also yellow gold so would it be an option to have the diamond reset in whichever metal I choose and does anyone have a rough idea of how much that might cost?

Thanks in advance

Swap?! I'm looking to get my white gold replated in yellow gold... white gold was the fashion when I got them but now it's yellow gold and I've realised it suits my skin tone much better!
If you go white gold def 18ct.

Perhaps I could get my yellow gold replated in white!

I've got some yellow gold jewellery but not much as I usually wear white gold or silver. Perhaps I need a two colour wedding ring!

Ah now I'm not sure you can replate yellow gold in white - white gold is a blend that is then rhodium plated. You can't rhodium plate onto white gold i think. Worth checking!

Anything can be rhodium plated, it just might not look very nice as it wears off.

Platinum is actually very low in price against gold at the moment. If you got it remade or got a new one you could scrap the gold against the new one

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 31/01/2019 19:36

I'll probably keep my original wedding ring (I'm getting sentimental in my old age!) but if I have the engagement ring reset I'll scrap the gold. I'm going to leave eternity ring as it is as, although it's yellow gold, you can hardly see any gold.

I'm doing the opposite to DM - when she got married 60 odd years ago she wanted gold but had platinum. Later on she replaced her platinum ring with a gold one!

I wouldn't go for white gold.

My rings require replating every year as they turn yellowy. I hadn't known about this before hand. If I were to change them in the future I would go for platinum.

I'm looking at palladium as an alternative to platinum as I know white gold does turn yellow. At the moment I'm thinking of a plain wedding band and having the diamond from my engagement ring reset in palladium or platinum. I might pop into a local jewellers tomorrow and have a chat. Obviously price will be a big issue!

Be careful with white gold. Depending on the mix it can go quite yellow very quickly. Replating is expensive if you have to do it every year, it gets annoying as well. Some mixes are better than others but if you are on a tight budget you are unlikely to get a good blend.

I had mine reset in Palladium. We found a good local jewellers. It cost £270 six years ago. My engagement ring still looks lovely now. It's a darker colour that white gold but doesn't fade and feels light on my hand.

Decision made! I've ordered a plain wedding ring and my engagement ring is being reset, both in platinum. My eternity ring can't be reset so it's being rhodium plated and I'll just have to have it redone every so often.
