cheap/reasonable snow/ice boots

I'm after a pair of cheap or reasonable snow/ice boots to wear in this appalling weather.

Friends have recommended and bought Timberland knee high grip ones or Uggs similar style but my budget won't stretch that far now.

A neighbour has some I think from an outdoor wear shop - they look like trainers I think

I broke my foot falling a few years ago (was treated a few years back as a sprain but was told after that a bone was broken in the foot) so I have a weakness in one foot and am petrified of falling!

Any ideas or links would be helpful.

What about these from
Mountain Warehouse

MotorcycleMayhem · 31/01/2019 12:01

What size and what budget?

Do you want lace up, above or below the ankle to support the foot / ankle?

NannyR · 31/01/2019 12:06

I have some from mountain warehouse, they keep my feet warm but they are not that comfortable to wear for any length of time, they make my feet very sweaty too!
I prefer to wear walking boots with thick socks (and some gaiters if there's lots of snow), plus ice grips which are worth their weight in gold in icy conditions.

I'm a 4 (37) - budget ideally under £100, would prefer lace up and don't mind if above or below the ankle. support would be ideal for ankle but not 100% necessary.

where I live is really hilly and it's in a vale so you have steep hills both sides up and down to navigate - of course they aren't gritted or salted!

NannyR have seen ice grips before and been tempted!

I don't have walking boots do have wellington boots which I used to wear with thick mountain style socks but they're a real drag to wear to work and back, at least other boots I can either wear in the office or take off and put under the desk! :-)

www.trespass.com/women/footwear/snow-boots

Trespass have a sale on right now; a pretty good one. I always get my snow boots from there and they are all great!

Greenteandchives · 31/01/2019 12:42

I have some from tk maxx which are great, and about £40. I have worn them loads. There was quite a choice.
You can sometimes get boots with a little metal bit in the sole which you can flick out when you are walking on snow.

EmGee · 31/01/2019 12:42

I have the Decathlon ones linked upthread. I was admiring a friend's similar boots (they were a Swedish brand and pricey) so, given that I'm not going skiing, I decided to try out the Decathlon version as they are only 40€. They're great for the price.

Given that you live in a hilly area and need support round the ankles, I would be more likely to go for a proper walking boot style. I'm not convinced the Decathlon ones would be supportive enough.

I wear yaxtrax over any shoes. Good grip even on sheet ice

countrybump · 31/01/2019 13:53

These are great - only slightly above budget but they look good, are sturdy, warm and comfortable.

MadameDD · 31/01/2019 14:22

Ollivander - I've just been reading the reviews on the YaxTrax, I have decided I'm getting a pair of these and a reasonable pair of snow boots maybe walking boot style.

The decathlon ones that @AveEldon posted are great
I wear them all the time!

alphaechokiwi · 31/01/2019 14:33

Yak trax from Amazon...go on over any shoes and fantastic grip

Ollivander84 · 31/01/2019 15:08

I'm prancing about in yaxtrax today
Male colleagues HmmHmm "what are those?"
5 minutes later I get a load of emails asking where I got them from Grin

ineedsomeinspiration · 31/01/2019 15:12

I was just about to come on and say what others already have, get the grips that go over your shoes.

mirage937 · 31/01/2019 18:17

at size 4 you could fit into junior shoes so worth considering to make a saving, i used to have a pair of north face ones similar to these www.thenorthface.co.uk/shop/en-gb/tnf-gb/youth-shellista-extreme-boot-2t5v?variationId=5SV

ichifanny · 31/01/2019 19:40

I have great Sorel snow boots I’m a 6 but bought kids ones in a size 5 so got them cheaper I love them .

nancybelle · 31/01/2019 20:46

Try Zalando for jack wolfskin ones. In your size you can get the children’s ones and you will get change from £40.

Arnoldillo · 31/01/2019 20:50

Our local Aldi had snow boots last week for £17.99.

Arnoldillo · 31/01/2019 20:52

And yeah yaktrax. They are great. They don't work on really super thin ice though.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 31/01/2019 22:31

Those of you that have the Decathlon boots, what is the sizing like? They say size 5.5 is a 39 or 6.5/40- I normally wear size 6/39.

EmGee · 01/02/2019 12:02

I'm a 4/37 and the 37 is fine.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 01/02/2019 12:44

Thank you.
