Marks & Spencer new season, all very modest, not much variety

Out shopping with DH for some clothes for him, took a quick look at the women's section. Not buying stuff at the moment, thought I would just see what their new season offerings look like. Just as well I was not in the market for buying. The necklines on their tops are all very high, with no variation that I could see.

I know that they introduced a section on their website a while back that was modesty dressing (whatever that means) but it seems to have infiltrated all their offerings. Admittedly I have not looked at their website so the range might be better on line.

I am not a fan of a low cut top. I have a largish chest and don't like the attention. But too high a neckline with big breasts looks like a shelf. I prefer the middle ground, but there seemed to be nothing for me in there. Are we all to be covered up these days?

So, this is yet another M & S bashing thread, but it's so frustrating when a mainstream retailer gets it so wrong, time after time. Why do they invest heavily in one look, where's the variety? (The quality was poor too, even the men's trousers were not up to their usual standard.) I used to think I would miss M & S if it disappeared but apart from food and knickers, not sure I would anymore.

Different strokes for different folks I guess - I think they’ve really upped their game this season and like a lot of their new stuff.

Sarcelle · 28/01/2019 06:09

That's just it though. There is no variety for different folks. It's all a muchness.

I agree. No variety in neckline seems ridiculous.

What if you DO want a low cut top?

AJPTaylor · 28/01/2019 06:40

All I ever want is a decent quality v neck top to accommodate my norkage. Surprisingly marks each season reinvents the feckin T shirt. I actually stood and laughed the summer where all their t shirts suddenly had a tiny little breast pocket on them.

buggerthebotox · 28/01/2019 11:11

I noticed this at Marksies' too. To be fair, I struggled to spot a V or decent round neck top anywhere at the weekend. I think those high neck tops are a feature of the high street at the moment.

I didn't know it was "modesty dressing" though - wtf's that?

If I need a non-frilly, ordinary V or even polo neck i head to Land's End for no-nonsense, decent quality tops in a good range of colours.

Other than that, I fancied quite a lot in Marksies, for once. I bought a (boring) pair of wide fit boots for work, a padded long coat in the sale, and another coat in the sale in a cocoon shape at half price.

I've had tops from Kettlewell for work. They come in a variety of neckline styles and if you've had your "colours" done, they have colours for each season.

I don’t think it has anything to do with their ‘modest’ range. It seems to be the fashion at the moment to cut tops high in the neck and short in the body. I have big boobs and a long torso and have struggled to find anything suitable recently.

Hazeintheclouds · 28/01/2019 12:42

High necklines are in fashion for 2019.

nothingwittyhere · 28/01/2019 15:16

It's fashion innit? It's driving me nuts that I can't currently buy full length jeans that aren't skinny but I know I'm just going to have to wait until the trend dies. Or give in and buy men's ones.

GraceMarks · 28/01/2019 15:31

They do seem to throw themselves behind a trend to the exclusion of all other options. I think it points towards a lack of confidence in their offering - they're not prepared to go out on a limb with something that might be more risky. Mind you, they have no problem covering all of their Per Una range with fecking sequins and ruffles, and I know nobody over the age of 6 who wishes to dress like that, so I don't know. Perhaps they're just clueless.

BubblesBuddy · 28/01/2019 15:41

MandS have straight cut jeans that are definitely not skinny! Try looking on line! Lots of choice! Why just go to a shop? A shop will never have everything that’s available. The new ranges are not all in yet and there is still a winter feel to offerings. Feb will be better but in the meantime, buy V neck cashmere?

nothingwittyhere · 28/01/2019 19:33

I have looked online, most recently last night. Even the straight jeans are pretty tight (because it's the current look). Also when you're tall and long legged then the ubiquitous ankle grazers don't cut it.

DianaT1969 · 28/01/2019 20:45

Hopefully they'll bring back the synthetic sack dress from last year. Neon yellow perhaps?

fiorentina · 28/01/2019 20:58

I thought they had a lot of different styles for varying ages and sizes when I was last in there. Some quite nice designs and some but not all were on trend.

BringBiscuits · 29/01/2019 07:44

I love high neck line. Being flat chested I think they suit me best. But... I have vouchers from Christmas to spend at m&s and hoped I could find some nice trousers. No luck! All ankle grazer! Every single pair. What’s that about in January??
