What brands does your forty-something comfortably built DH wear?

Asking on behalf of mine as he is really stuck for inspiration at the moment.

He seems to have ended up in a rut where M&S is the only option and they don't have anything that he wants to wear. He is finding clothes shopping a disappointing chore. I think he and his wardrobe need a reboot but don't know where to start.

All the more fashionable high street shops that are aimed at young people are full of slim fitting and skinny things that just won't work.

Where should he be looking?

I suggest a department store like John Lewis as a starting point. Brands like Gant, Hugo Boss,Barbour, Hacket, Brax, Armani. Think American brands, some British and some German. If you’re in the North, Barkers of Northallerton is one of the best places I’ve ever been for men’s clothes (for DH and my sons.)
Some of these brands are expensive but good quality, and last.

QueenofallIsee · 27/01/2019 18:46

DP is ages 42, 34” waist and 6ft. He wears Hugo Boss for smart casual, Emporio Armani for shirts, Levi (for Jeans), French Connection, Ralph Lauren for nice jumpers. Also does a lot of Nike for comfies.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/01/2019 18:54

Dp is 6'1 and either a 32 or 34 waist.

He wears mainly Levis jeans or Fat Face cords, Fatface jumpers, or long sleeved rugby shirts from M&S, DM brogues.

Welshcake77 · 27/01/2019 18:56

My DH is 37, 1.80m and well built. He mostly wears Boss jumpers, trousers and jackets from Massimo Dutti, shirts and blazers from Suit Supply, also shirts from Ralph Lauren.

Synecdoche · 27/01/2019 19:08

Gap, Lands End, Fat Face...

Bluntness100 · 27/01/2019 19:10

For casual gear mine likes timberland amongst others. M&S is a bit dull.

Annasgirl · 27/01/2019 19:10

Gant - DH is very tall so can only get a 36 leg in Gant. Also reliable as he knows he will always look ok. He’s self employed so needs to look polished. He wears Polo for shorts and T-shirt’s - again due to size. Some Tommy Hilfiger jeans as they are very long. But not trendy😉

Nuffaluff · 27/01/2019 19:12

Gap. That’s it! He doesn’t like clothes shopping, so can only stomach one shop.
He also orders film t shirts online. The kind that have obscure references to films and you have to know the film to know what it is.

Annasgirl · 27/01/2019 19:12

Gant suit the “well built” also if you have Eden Park near you - they are great. Set up by ex Rugby players from France. So wide fitting! And stylish.

FreeButtonBee · 27/01/2019 19:16

Some nice places for jumpers etc that are a bit less mainstream are sunspel and finisterre. DH also likes j crew - shop the sales and it’s much better value. Men’s stuff never goes out of fashion so the sales are ideal for the more classic —boring— guy😄

Jbck · 27/01/2019 19:20

It might help if you post D H’s vital statistics, what suits my ever so slightly 😃 husky 5 ft 9 12’ 10 DH isnt going to suit your DH if HE’s 6 ft 4 and 16 stone.

Springmachine · 27/01/2019 19:53

Mads Norrgard

Neverunderfed · 27/01/2019 20:47

Dh is 6'4" and approx a 34" waist. He's quite casual even at work and tends to stick to Gap jeans, some Joules, Crew Clothing, Fat Face, White Stuff etc. Some M&S for basics. He has v long limbs so struggles sometimes. Has some nice Barbour brogue style boots at the mo.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 27/01/2019 20:53

Dh wears crew clothing. Good quality casual but smarter basics. They don’t fade when washed like a lot of other brands.

He has some fat face but hates slogan t shirts and hoodies so that’s slim pickings. He likes Boden jeans and again plain t shirts and polo shirts. He doesn’t like Ralph Lauren or Gant he will also wear Lyle and Scott. Combined with some more designer brands like stone island.

He’s very fussy and things must have minimal if no branding on. He’ll also wear Levi’s jeans.

cordeliaflynne · 27/01/2019 22:13

Wow, lots of great suggestions here, thanks everyone. DH has looked at Gant before but it sounds like that could well be worth another look. I have not heard of Eden Park but a quick google and I think that could be another one we should look at. I had suggested Fat Face to him - I now have some back up for my suggestion :-).

Now to just persuade him to go on a shopping trip as I fear he is very much in the mould of Nuffluff - one shop seems to be his tolerance level.

Hackett and Boden.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 27/01/2019 23:10

Levis are the jeans of choice for my DH. He does have some nice Ted Baker chinos, but most of their stuff he finds a bit 'restricting (i think he means they are a snug fit!) Mainly Hugo Boss for more smart (but not shirt & tie type) shirts, and Gant or Ralph Lauren for more casual. He wears chunky jumpers with a plain t shirt underneath for casual too.
He detests shopping, so we have done a few personal shops in Selfridges which have been hugely successful, but also eye-wateringly expensive! And as mens fashion really doesn't change dramatically once they've hit their 50's I dont think its always worth spending a fortune.
TK Maxx can be good for picking up bargains, and we (or should I say 'I' ) tend to do retail outlets. thIs saves money that I can then spend on myself Grin'

leaveby10 · 28/01/2019 09:16

Uniqlo is the back bone of dh's wardrobe - shirts, t shirts, good knitwear and jeans...even a trendy mac.

leaveby10 · 28/01/2019 09:18

We did a personal shopper thing in John Lewis Oxford Street is was a bloody disaster - they wanted to put him in shrunken Paul Smith and Ted Baker - I ended up going on to the shop floor and doing the job myself!

small2018 · 28/01/2019 09:26

Gap for basics
Diesel jeans
Retro T-shirts with references to films, old skool hip hop, etc, NEVER plain
Timberlands

maxiflump1 · 28/01/2019 09:28

DH is 6 3 and heavy built and his casual gear is generally Timberland, Fat Face, animal and Boden.

Annasgirl · 28/01/2019 22:35

My DH goes to one shop twice a year - I know your pain. Still at least we will never be bankrupt from his shopping habit😂

LaPampa · 28/01/2019 22:57

Mine hates shopping and hates labels and will only wear plain good quality stuff. He has previously worn Nudie jeans. I recently persuaded him into some Timberland Chelsea boots. I’ve been trying to get him to get some new jumpers but no such luck. He has several Albam shirts which he wears until they are literally ripped and falling apart. I despair but like a pp don’t have to worry about his shopping habit, only mine!

I’ve tried to get him to look at Sunspel, Oliver Spencer as well as Albam. Finisterre have some plain stuff but it doesn’t wear super well with the kind of use my husband gives it.

Ivegotthree · 28/01/2019 22:59

Gant
Barbour
Diesel jeans
Orlebar Brown
Spoke
