Very Cold Weather Style?

If you were going somewhere very cold (such as -10Cish and light snow) and it was a city break where you'd be going out for dinner, drinks etc at night but would be outside a fair bit to sight see also in the day and might not change day to evening, what would you take to wear including what coat? Hand luggage only. Help me please Smile

Thermals
Jeans (black)
Nice jumpers
My down jacket
Big blanket scarf
Woolly hat
Gloves - for me, the warmest combo I have found are a pair of gloves with a pair of mittens on top. I don't seem to get blue fingers with that set up at all!
Footwear would be flat boots with a decent sole

Basically I'd go for warmth first! But nice jumpers can be dressed up a bit with accessories like earrings and a bit more makeup for the evening. Take a little thing of dry shampoo so you can fix hat hair and you'll be set.

You could always check out a few blogs to see what the locals wear too. Copenhagen Cycle Chic if that's where you're off to, for example?

Have a lovely time!

I'd echo all of the above and say that you want to layer to peel off. I've been to New York, Germany, Italy, Iceland and France in up to -10 with wind, rain, snow and a really good coat is worth every penny (I use my Didriksons or North Face with a Patagonia or Uniqlo down jacket underneath and if you can stretch to merino base layer do our go for Uniqlo heattech (you can go for different levels of warmth). For me the most important was coat that came to my knees, really comfy warm waterproof footwear (don't forget good socks), trapper style hat or get ear muffs and mittens. A merino buff in your bag is a lifesaver! In New York it was very cold but dry and with North Face Metropolis Parka I just wore a dress under it it was so toasty! I've found in really cold cities the heating indoors is cranked right up so you want to be able to peel your layers off.

Ok so within reason my normal clothes underneath provided they are layered, and a very good coat/winter accessories. Can either of you helpful people link or attach a photo of the type of coat you have or would take? Thank you!

I've just been to Iceland and highly recommend the Uniqulo thermals (the highest thermal rated ones, they kept me toasty!)

Also, a pair of Sorel snow boots for out and about during the day - might be a bit clumpy for you if you're just in the city, but we went out on several tours and I was the only person not to have cold feet! They were also great for grip, DH wore a pair of Timbetland boots and he was sliding all over the place whereas I was fine.

I did take a pair of slightly dressier ankle boots to wear out at night and was fine in them as we didn't go too far.

Waterproof and warm and the hood really comes into it's own when snowing I've got very similar to this www.blacks.co.uk/womens/077126-didriksons-women-s-angelina-2-parka-khaki.html

And for dry cold www.thenorthface.co.uk/shop/en-gb/tnf-gb/womens-metropolis-parka-ii-2tan

I wore Sorel boots - they're brilliant. I've got the proper snow ones with the rubber shoe bit and also these which I was dubious if they'd hold up in rain and snow but they were fabulous - warm, waterproof, comfy to walk in for hours and looked that little bit smarter in the city www.sorelfootwear.co.uk/womens-rylee-boots-NL2370.html (I wore them in a good foot of snow!)

You need a massive, North Face parka, preferably below your bum.

Boots with a thick insulated sole. Hat. Gloves. Close fitting scarf.

Following!

Thank you, I've never heard of Sorel boots before, will have a good look. The Didrlksons parka above looks lovely

Bear in mind too that certain cities allow you to travel through the city without actually going outside : you could get from your hotel to massive indoors malls and restaurants, for example.

The building I work in means even if it's minus 25 outside I don't even need my coat to go and get lunch /go to the shops because there's internal access,so no need to bundle up to cross the street. Totally depends on the city, obviously. In this case you can wear whatever you want.
