Hair colour - what am I after?

I feel a bit silly/clueless asking this, but I need some guidance...

I have shoulder length hair that has been highlighted for some time now (I usually get a half head done every couple of months). My natural colour is a light brown (although I used to be very blonde and the rest of my colouring is very fair).
Where my hair isn't highlighted - eg at the base of my neck) it's totally brown, so looks really dark and heavy. My highlights are a fairly light blonde, but looking increasingly dark.

What I'd like to do is to lighten all my hair, rather than just highlight the top. I'd like to go really light (almost a white blonde). So what do I need to ask for at the hairdressers? A full tint? Something else?
And how likely is it that I could get to a very light blonde? Would it require multiple trips?

Or... Could I do this myself at home??

Thanks in advance!

Do a search for blonde hair colour on Pinterest, find some pics you like and take them into the hairdressers to ask them. I should imagine that a good colourist will be able to get the colour you want in one day, but it's worth paying good money for so it's done right and doesn't damage your hair. Don't even think about trying to do it yourself! Also, it will be a pain in the butt to maintain so you could think about a more ombre or balayage style which will look better when it's growing out.

Thanks very much for your reply. Had to Google ombre and balayage and it looks as though balayage is exactly what I'm after (I have a photo of the hairstyle I'd love to have and it also pops up on Pinterest as an example of balayage so I reckon I'll go for it!).

Good luck!

I went from very dark brown to an ashy blonde in about three sessions. I wasn't in a hurry to get the final result, and not lifting the colour all in one go meant my hair has stayed in good nick. If you can hang on a bit, I would recommend this approach. It means my colour is more streaky and natural
looking rather than a flat blonde all over, and my colourist lifts or darkens it a little at each session.

I went from dyed brown to platinum blonde/silver in one go. Full head tint. It was a bit burny on my scalp, not going to lie Grin
