Life after 50

Hi mumsnetters. I'm looking for a bit of inspiration and motivation. I'm a full time worker, married, main breadwinner, recently empty nested, on the brink of the menopause, but chubby, but otherwise in good health.

I'm demotivated, depressed and at a loss to know what the hell to do with the rest of my life. Can't go and do something entrepreneurial as I still have to support DCs in university and pay the mortgage for the next 10 years. I can barely face the day. No get up and go whatsoever.

Any ideas?

Hi op, I’m sure therell be loads of great advice but you may get more replies on another board rather than style and beauty. Sorry you’re feeling this way x

Pyotrkrolik · 24/01/2019 17:47

I agree with Toot. I’d start another thread in ‘Chat’. Hope you get lots of interesting ideas. Good luck.

bagpiss · 24/01/2019 18:05

Hi op, have you been to the doctors,? The symptoms and feelings you're having aren't uncommon when approaching or during menopause.
It could help as a start to helping you feel better.
Thanks

Floisme · 24/01/2019 18:59

Sorry you’re feeling like this op. Your 50s (and beyond) are a handful and sometimes the way you feel about your appearance is part of that. If that’s the case for you then there are plenty of us navigating our changing faces and bodies and trying to still have a bit of fun with it. Personally I’m more about the clothes but some posters are very knowledgeable about skincare too.

AnotheChinHair · 24/01/2019 19:03

This is such a time of change for you OP! Baby steps.

You don't mention a partner or friends, hobbies, etc.

Have you had your bloods taken?

LunaTheCat · 24/01/2019 19:28

-I would start with getting some exercise - no need to get into the Lycra just walk so you are puffed, skipping, star jumps.can do squats or lunges at home. Aim 30 mins a day but can do exercise “snacks” so 3 lots 10 mins

  • consider yoga which is great for your mind and your body ( YouTube Yoga with Adrienne)
  • go to a hairdresser and get a good cut and colour
-dental hygienist and good teeth clean. Make sure you have an electric toothbrush. -get some clothes that make you feel good NOW . Don’t wait until you have lost X number kg
  • get a good bra ( sorry should have come before the clothes as this matters the most) a good bra lifts your breasts and makes your torso look longer.
-facial, get eyebrows done your 50’s are fab and it sounds like you need to find yourself

We are in the same boat. I am also after 50, empty nester as well. A word of assurance.. your dcs still need you and me.. financially and morally, they will be coming ho,e more often than you think, and will not miss on family holidays. Mortgages will keep us also going.. I think that feeling comes to all of us, most of my friends are hiding it. My current state is work, sport center and self development on beauty, hair dos, and etc - I have never had time to do so before. I have taken a beauty make up lessons.. a waste of money in some sense.. but so delightful..

RelaxedSelfGuiding · 25/01/2019 12:57

Thanks all. Food for thought!

Jennifer Lopez is 50. Just leave that there.
So much more of life ahead of you. I kinda felt a bit flat and low when I hit 40 but I guess the next stage is about giving back. That’s my plan anyway

JinglingHellsBells · 25/01/2019 21:04

Yes, HRT.
Go and see a sympathetic doctor.

LadyLapsang · 26/01/2019 13:46

Get your bloods checked 're hormones, vitamin D and thyroid function. Luna 's got great suggestions too.

grumiosmum · 26/01/2019 18:29

Couch to 5k.

HRT.

Sorted me out.

expatmigrant · 26/01/2019 18:56

Baby steps as others have mentioned.
See your Dr to get bloods done.
Have a good look at your diet to see where you need to make the changes and join a gym or dance class .
I agree with crazydaisy
Hair, nails and eyebrows well groomed is also important.
I'm mid50's and the fact that I'm slim and pretty fit gives me heaps of confidence, because it means i can dress fashionably and often have a lot more style than my younger colleagues and friends.
You will get there! X

I think Luna's advice is great! Good luck OP.
