Hair plugs? Pieces

Hi so I have thinning hair - all over and particularly at the front.

I've had my bloods done. I have a medicated underactive thyroid on 150 of levothyroxine.

I take ferrograd C - biotin - vit D.

My ferritin is low as is my D.

I don't think my hair situation is going to get better my mum is balding at the front too and has the same auto immune issues.

I've spoken to a hair clinic who advise I come in to see them but it's going to be hair pieces as a solution.

Has anyone got experience of these? It's a matter of getting them done maybe around £600-£700 then 6 weekly maintenance!!! I don't know where I would find the money and the time to do this

Sorry no advice really, but can empathise, i have the same problem, so did my mother and her mother, but mine is very thick at the front, and one side is thicker than the other, but mine is thinning on the crown and the back of my head
Hair pieces sound very expensive dont they? and its very depressing losing your hair
Had my thyroid tested a few times, all ok, and i generally have highish ferritin, due to overload of iron, but when it drops too low it affects me in other ways,it has been quite low in the last year when i noticed my hair suddenly seen much thinner , but i am also taking biotin, dont know if it will help, but its supposed to, only time will tell
I hope yoy can find a solution. x

It's so so so depressing I just don't know what to do.

I'm getting so thin and in my late 30s. It's horrible and distresses me so much.

I have a dermatologist referral from my GP but mega mega long waiting lists

I have had a 'hair system' for about 10 years. In addition to the upfront cost my maintenance costs are £135 per month. It's expensive and far from perfect but I'd give up my cleaner, booze, practically anything before I give up my hair as I had no no confidence before and I'm not exaggerating to say it was pretty much all I thought about. When I'm older I will probably invest in the best quality wig I can afford.

WorriedMum11 · 23/01/2019 22:08

I think about it ALL the time - the filled plug holes the hair in the hair brushes, food, vacuum just everywhere is my constant reminder.

So much money can I ask how much your initial system was and why it's monthly maintenance?

Can I also ask what you've had done? Thank you

And here I am pulling mine out :(

fizzyfizz · 23/01/2019 22:47

Mine was £1,000 upfront. The system is a net/mesh that covers your own hair and is sewn to fit your head shape. Your own hair is then pulled through the mesh and secured with micro rings. Rows of hair extensions (look very much like the clip in type) are sewn to the mesh with a separate piece on top to make a natural looking parting. The micro rings need replacing every 4-6 weeks depending how fast your hair grows and
every 6 months the whole thing is removed, cleaned and repaired if required and having your actual head washed after 6 months under the 'system' is one of the nicest feelings in the world! Lots of pros and cons but wouldn't be without them.
Where about a do you live? I might be able to recommend somewhere for a consultation.

WorriedMum11 · 24/01/2019 16:27

In the West Midlands - wow that sounds so time consuming.

I wish my hair would grow but it won't

I'm a full time wig wearer because of alopecia. I'm completely out about it, so I have several wigs different colours and styles that I change with my outfits. All mine are synthetics, and my only regret is I waited as long as I did.

Kind of a tangent so I won't go into detail but after tests I found I needed to supplement thyroxine with liothyronine, and my hair grew back. My head hair and eyebrows had both thinned considerably and I had always had loads of hair so it was a relief to get it back.
My mum is also hypothyroid (Hashimoto's) and had extensive hair thinning on thyroxine.
If you're interested in finding out more TUK is an excellent source of info and help.
Good luck, losing hair is upsetting. Flowers

thefirstmrsdewinter · 24/01/2019 18:02

Just to clarify, liothyronine is a thyroid hormone as well. When I say 'supplement' I mean I take both. It isn't available otc.

WorriedMum11 · 24/01/2019 18:39

Oh thank you!!

How did you get the liothyronine?

Thank you

Yes I have thin eyebrows!!

OP posts:
thefirstmrsdewinter · 24/01/2019 18:53

I was lucky enough to have it prescribed by my endocrinologist but this is very uncommon now. If you have a look at the TUK site you can learn more about it. Some people don't convert their thyroxine well so your test results look fine but you can still be very symptomatic. It changed my life but it's not a panacea of course, and it's not for everyone.

thefirstmrsdewinter · 24/01/2019 18:57

Also you can try Rapidlash (otc) or Latisse (prescription I think) for your eyebrows. That helped too.
There may be a brow product too - Rapidbrow? - though Rapidlash worked for my brows.

fizzyfizz · 24/01/2019 19:01

The maintenance appointments are 30mins to an hour so not too bad, but I'm fortunate enough to live walking distance from the salon I go to. Still difficult to find the time if you work and/or have young kids There isn't a branch near you (Bristol and Manchester are the closest) but others may be available (and poss cheaper?) near you. It's a big commitment as once you start, it would be very difficult to give up, but if it gets you down to this extent, it may be worth looking into it.

WorriedMum11 · 24/01/2019 22:10

Ill look at thyroid uk thank you.

I am very symptomatic of an underactive thyroid and when my Levo was increased I ended up with heart palpitations. My T3 was tested and was ok!

Probably salons closer I'm sure - yeah it's really getting me down.

I want to enjoy what's left of my youth with hair!
