I need some advice. I have hormonal acne on my chin and around mouth. I'm 37.
I've tried benzyl peroxide but it's not really doing anything. I'll admit my diet is bad, I eat too much sugar. Do I need antibiotics? Zineryt isn't helping either.
I've tried a REN toner which also isn't doing anything. It's crap.

Are you taking any kind of hormone? The pill for example?

Beechview · 21/01/2019 10:59

Try cutting out dairy and sugar for a while and see if it helps?

RadioGagga · 21/01/2019 11:00

No I don't take the pill. I came off it and it has improved my libido which is what I wanted.

How long have you had it for? I’m the same age as you and have had yo-yoing acne for years / the only time it improved was when I was pregnant. I recently started lymecycline, having not been on antibiotics for it over 15 years, which helped but seemed to give me a strange rash on my chest and neck. I switched to clarithromycin and it’s really helping.

I've had it for quite a while. I also have urticaria so take antihistamines.

Gut health, I reckon it is nearly always about gut health. More veg and probiotics. Less sugar and processed stuff. Some people are lucky and can eat anything and not react. I have to be careful or I become super spotty. And antibiotics etc. don't help me as inflame my gut more. But it is all super personal. Try strengthening your skin: The Ordinary is good and available online with advice about what to buy for skin type.

Dairy triggers my acne. I’ve never been a fan of milk but love cheese.
Soft cheese especially makes my skin come up in huge spots around my chin mostly.
I have almond milk and limit cheese and my skin is quite clear now.

Paula's Choice fixed my adult acne. Start with the 2% BHA liquid exfoliant in the turquoise blue bottle.

I'm 48 and feel like I've struggled with hormonal acne on and off since my teens. I have PCOS which doesn't help. I used Dermalogica skincare for a while and that definitely made a big difference. Unfortunately I moved overseas for a few years and the cost of Dermalogica was extortionate there. Now back in the UK and I use Haeckels skincare (face wash, face cream, exfoliating soap for body, kelp bioferment) and that has made the biggest difference ever. I am a convert. for life. Gentler is definitely better for my skin. I also think the bladderwrack (seaweed) in Haeckels products helps.

Dairy never made a difference to me. However, I do eat pretty healthily (lots of veg, usually cooked from scratch) and drink at least 2 litres of water every day.

Hormonal acne will not be cured by diet or expensive skincare, get yourself to the Dr, work through the antibiotics and when you've had enough ask to see a dermatologist who will look at roaccutane, yes it's evil, it needs to be an informed decision, but it has an insane success rate. I've been acne free for 2 years after 10 years of suffering.

That's not necessarily true. Just because it didn't work for you, doesn't mean it won't make a difference to others. Diet in particular has been proven to demonstrate significant evidence that it can benefit hormonal acne.

I took a course of roaccutane many years ago and it did help for a few years. Unfortunately the acne eventually came back and my GP refused to refer me for another course (was a different GP/surgery to my previous one). I was too upset by the refusal to pursue it further. What I actually liked the most about roaccutane was that it stopped my greasy hair and suddenly I was one of those people who didn't have to wash their hair every day. It was amazing! Didn't last but I enjoyed it while it did.

@HundredMilesAnHour my dermatologist very firmly assured me diet was not going to change my acne, hormonal acne is just that affected by hormones. It was just very frustrating for me to be told by people "oh stop eating dairy" as if I ate poorly, it's a medical condition and needed to be treated as such, I appreciate everyone is different but if she has acknowledged its hormones it's likely she needs medical help.

Yes I've heard it can take 2 doses, if it comes back I will refer straight back to a dermatologist, if they refused I'd go private! It changed my life. Yes I loved the non greasy hair, first time in my life I didn't have to wash my hair everyday! That side effect wore off unfortunately!

Same age as you and suffered with acne since my teens.

The only product that ever made a difference is Janmarini Bioglycolic Face Cleanser. Honestly, for me a game changer. I think it's about £37 comes in a 237 ml bottle. I use twice a day and only have to buy it twice a year.
