Hi All,
I can no longer stand the bright grey regrowth against dark brown hair.

I need to start "managing" my way to a lighter colour.

I've tried the local salon but as my hair throughs orange I now have that "old mum that doesn't really care or have any time" brown/orange look going on...... need to correct it!
Advice?

No advice, but I am in exactly the same situation, and also in London. This year I am determined to tackle this issue - I feel like I need to find a good local salon (run by one or two people, not an endless stream of transient young hairdressers who don't understand) who can take me through this "journey".
What's CBD by the way?

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 20/01/2019 19:57

Central business district..CBD

I don't mind if it is a big or small salon just as long as they can do colouring and colour advice really well.

Try charlottecave.com/

Hello! I go to Josh Wood Atelier which is in Holland’s Park. You don’t have to see Josh himself - I see one of the junior colourists (Billy) and they are really good at colour. They really know their stuff but be prepared it’s expensive. I go about 4 times a year and pay about £400 each time for a cut and colour (plus tips). You can go in between times for a wash of colour to deal with the grey roots and that’s cheaper. The other place I tried is Richard Ward in Sloane Square but I’m not sure who I would recommend for colour there. Best wishes.

Try Percy and Reed. Very friendly and not up its self (like Richard Ward!!)

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 21/01/2019 07:09

sunglasses 123 any particular colourist you recommend?

I had a great blonde done by Bo at Gro in Clapham. It was one of the best blondes I’ve ever had done - he did a mix of two shades lighter in very fine foils to make sure it looked very natural & help cover the early stages of grey. Unfortunately Clapham is just too far for me on a regular basis, but I’d definitely recommend him. About £150 for half head and a cut.

wombatthewarrior · 21/01/2019 09:37

I can thoroughly recommend Four London on Conduit Street, W1 (although maybe not the right area you want). It's run by 4 top colourists who all trained at Jo Hansford and then started up their own salon. I've been going there since they opened in 2010 and before that when they were working in JH's.

FreeButtonBee · 21/01/2019 14:02

I also really recommend Charlotte cave. First time I’ve been loyal to a salon in about 10 years

ThisNameIsDifferentFromTheLast · 21/01/2019 14:18

I used to see Anna Wiig (new Zealand lady, as there are two) at Taylor Taylor Shoreditch.

She did such a great job blending my highlights the last time I saw her, that two years later I'm still being asked if ive had my hair baylaged (I've moved away and not coloured my hair since due to kids / fear of finding new salon Confused)

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 21/01/2019 19:10

thanks!
Also happy to hear how anyone with dark brown hair has managed the transition (and Very fair porcelain skin)

thx

Wombatthewarrior, I have been thinking of trying Four London, can I ask who you see?

pearlkent · 21/01/2019 23:13

Any recommendations for west London area?

wombatthewarrior · 22/01/2019 09:22

LadyLapsang I see Charlie in Four! She's been colouring my hair for around 15 years now!

LadyLapsang · 24/01/2019 07:45

Wombatthewarrior, thank you. Who cuts it? I will book a cut and colour consultation.

wombatthewarrior · 24/01/2019 09:36

LadyLapsang, I don't have it cut there, just coloured. They do have some really good stylists though. When you go for a consultation for the colour, speak to Charlie about a cut and she'll recommend someone in there for you.

Some of Four stylists have also come from Jo Hansford.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 24/01/2019 14:01

(are you Australian OP)

citykat · 24/01/2019 14:20

I have been to charlotte cave too - very good. Mine goes orange so now I just bleach it blonde. The greys don't show so much. I went for a consultation with every hairdresser on my local high street and they all said highlights except one that said blonde all over. I go there now. I'd stick to your local area as Zone 1 adds cost and means more likely to be a trendy young colourist with less experience of grey, in my view.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 25/01/2019 12:34

Dontcallmecharlotte i am indeed australian, how did you know?

Sorry for the delay. Try Ross at Percy and Reed

Dafspunk · 26/01/2019 21:12

Nick and his team at Haringtons Soho are absolutely brilliant.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 26/01/2019 23:37

I think CBD is an expression peculiar to Australia (and New Zealand maybe?). I'm guessing you're talking about "the City" (or "Square Mile") in London or it could be the West End?

PickAChew · 26/01/2019 23:49

CBD is an official term for the Central business district of a town or city. Remember this from AO level General studies, 30 years ago.

Pale and greying but outside of London, so no help. The problem with our colouring is that lighter brown hair washes us out, with the loss of contrast, so if you wear make up, you'll need to adjust that. I don't, so I'm sticking with my natural salt and pepper because it suits me better and takes much less maintenance.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 21/01/2020 09:16

SO a year later and after trying at the local salon a couple more times I am going to move on.

Four London looks great (thanks wombatthewarrior, cool name too).

Has anyone had a complete colour change there? I'm wanting to go from what feels like orange to an ash blonde / move towards grey

Or at Jo Hansford?
