Blimey - I've just straightened my hair, having cleaned my straighteners for the first time in a gazillion years and . . . .

. . . . it's actually straight and smooth.

I thought my straighteners were dying and I just hadn't cleaned them for ages

Ewwwww... was the stuff that came off, like, really gungy?

Desiderata · 30/06/2007 19:34

How did you clean them, Jonesy?

Aitch · 30/06/2007 19:35

how do you clean them? i hardly use mine cos they're so gunky.

JonesTheSteam · 30/06/2007 19:36

With an old toothbrush and washing-up-liquid.

It took me ages.

And yes it was really gunky

But still a damn-sight cheaper than forking out for new ones!!!

Me either - my SIL just used them on her fringe (staying here and going to a ball with work) and suggested that maybe I should think about cleaning them!!!

Desiderata · 30/06/2007 19:44

pirategirl · 30/06/2007 19:46

I think it was probably a build up of the stuff I spray on my hair to protect it when I'm straightening.

OP posts:
pirategirl · 30/06/2007 19:51

ok, most of the surface of my plates is dark grey and roughish, it IS scrapeable.

But what is it that comesoff-is it metal, is grey like powder.

Have i now buggered them up.

JonesTheSteam · 30/06/2007 19:52

SIL has GHDs as she has lots of money.

I can only afford lowly Nicky Clarke ones.

She says she has never needed to clean hers.

JonesTheSteam · 30/06/2007 19:53

The stuff on mine was brown. I didn't scrape them though. I used washing-up-liquid and a toothbrush.

Jones your SIL is telling porkies, my GHDs are disgusting and are in dire need of a clean, but they are nearly 5 yrs old now (never been cleaned )(and still going strong, and are used every day - how's that for value for money? )

JonesTheSteam · 30/06/2007 20:13

Don't think SIL uses hers that often though.

I tried my friend's GHD's at her house when I was staying there as I was contemplating buying some. Didn't actually think they were any better than my NC ones (when they're clean of course!!)

My NC ones have lasted two years so far. And they were only £35 in a sale in Argos. Best straighteners I've ever bought!

Gingermonkey · 30/06/2007 20:15

They are horridly expensive and I really need the wider ones (I have the extra skinny) but won't bring myself to part with the cash... after all christmas is only 5 mths away

pirategirl · 30/06/2007 20:54

grimeupdate

its coming off v slowly, resorted to scourer and fairy liquid!!!!

the plates still feel smooth, although a bit scratched now, but better than that yuk.

toothbrush wasnt doing anything at all.

Gingermonkey · 30/06/2007 22:25

you are putting me to shame - tomorrow I clean the GHDs!!!!!

electra · 30/06/2007 22:28
