Festival wear

Just booked festival tickets for the first time in years! Will be camping/glamping, with access to showers (I'm not as hardy as I used to be...)

But what should I wear? I'd like to be slightly stylish if possible. I'm currently size 20 (hoping to lose weight before, but no clue if I'll manage it, so need to be realistic).

So far the only thing on my list is funky wellies - any other thoughts?

Layer up with thick tights or leggings. Jeans are useless in the mud and rain. Layers of long sleeve tops and jumpers. Couple extra pairs of thick socks. If you're wearing wellies you'll need long knee high socks - wellies rub is not fun. Take a cheap pair of flipflops for the showers (90p from Primark when the summer stuff comes in)

The fun thing about festivals is you can wear whatever you like. Is there a style you like but don’t usually have the courage to wear? Festivals are the place to go for it. There will be people wearing all sorts, from skintight catsuits to ball gowns, full on goth, anything. Have a look at the gallery from last year for the festival you are going to, and have a look.

ShowOfHands · 19/01/2019 09:12

Clothes you like that are fit for purpose. Don't be those annoying people with a festival uniform (usually wellies, denim shorts, a linen top with crocheted hem and a straw hat). Normal festival goers wear normal clothes. Layers are good, evenings can be chilly. Denim is rubbish if it gets wet. Keep your head and shoulders covered as wide open fields = sunburn, take sunblock, extra socks. Enjoy!

Stating the obvious but it will depend on the weather. We were at Deershed last year and it was roasting. I wore the thinnest clothes I owned. Slightly concerned the kids will get a bit of a shock this year if the weather is more normal!

Keep a very very close eye on the weather forecast! If it rains you really are out in it - not very glamorous but a waterproof poncho is honestly the best thing to go over everything! And a good pair of wellies, more socks than you believed possible, lots of layers.
Or alternatively, a really big hat, sunscreen and a sundress / shorts.
I’ve had both extremes and preparation is everything!! Wear clothes that you feel comfortable in, not some kind of festival ‘uniform’.

Which festival? Some, like Bestival for example, actively encourage fancy dress. They even have a theme for the Sunday, last year it was circus. The rest of the time the main look was sequin dresses, outlandishly patterned lycra leggings, lots of glittery face art and headgear. Male and female alike, anything went.

But it was also scorching sunshine all weekend which helped. If the weather is bad, whatever festival it is, forget fashion. You won't last 12hrs a day outside without wellies, and long waterproof. Hooded, no-one carries an umbrella. Also layers, even in summer it gets chilly in the evening.

Look at previous years photos from whichever festival it is. Asos and Top Shop have festival sections come summer, pick something from there. But mainly, unless you're going somewhere achingly cool like Coachella, forget stylish. Crazy, glittery hedonistic fun is usually the look for a festival.

I've been to lots of music festivals around the UK and have got tickets for Glastonbury and I'll be taking my now "refined" festival kit - not refined as in stylish but tried and tested - cut off jeans so I've got pockets to stash phone, cash, packet of tissues (I've put zips on the pockets so if refreshed I don't do the whole "drop everything down the long drop/portaloo" dance when going for a wee) and I wear either leggings, tights or both under for warmth/sun protection/avoidance of welly leg chafe. I wear the same cut offs on my bottom half for the whole festival with clean knickers/tights/leggings . If it rains I wear a poncho as easier to move around in and covers longer length - I've got a Rainwave one which was £££ but I go to festivals/camp a lot to has proven worth it. Think they're no longer available but worth a look on eBay. Wellies and trainers if dry and I take flipflops for in the tent and really handy if it's boiling to change into once in situ. I've got a rather ridiculous sequinned cape I then wear over gig t shirts etc. If weather looking glorious I take a maxi t shirt dress but pretty much 90% of time in cut offs with leggings suits me. Easy to dress up with your top half, comfy, great for dancing on and if hot, whip off leggings or if cold, add tights. Rucksack, sunglasses, roll of black bags (really handy to sit on, bag up at stuff, makeshift poncho etc), wet wipes and big warm scarf to wrap up of chilly in night, big sun hat or SPF parasol if blazing. Booze, cash, snacks, painkillers. All the over the top make up you may think is "too much" day to day? Slap it on.

Hope you have a brilliant time!

A decent poncho is invaluable. I have had this one for 15 years and it makes a good cushion/waterproof picnic blanket too.

This is pretty spendy but if I was going to suggest one thing for a festival in the UK it'd be this www.opumo.com/clothing/coats-jackets/raincoats/fisherman-s-yellow-hardy-poncho-2-0.html , comfy wellies and decent welly socks Smile

Your mates will be able to spot you a mile off! Love the yellow.

tubspreciousthings · 19/01/2019 17:12

Thanks all - some great tips! I've not been to a festival for so long.

So I've ordered some wellies, a rain proof poncho and some warm leggings.

I'll need to carry around kids stuff - do you recommend a small rucksack or crossbody bag?

OP posts:
bingohandjob · 19/01/2019 17:21

I take a rucksack - if you factor in sunglasses, hat, emergency kit (wet wipes, lippy, painkillers, bottle of 'water'), maybe something to sit on and kids stuff much easier in rucksack and good for dancing (can go under poncho, too) but I do also sometimes take a little crossbody too for minimal stuff if doing the bar run etc...which festival are you going to? I'd get the kids one, too - Decathlon do really lightweight ones - my friends kids love having their own festival rucky with "their" supplies in www.decathlon.co.uk/ultra-comp-rucksack-10l-green-id_8492591.html

Bumbags are very handy at festivals too but I know for some people they're a step too far!

blackberrybay · 19/01/2019 17:46

Rucksack definitely.

You'll do a lot of sitting around whatever the weather, on the fields or in marquees and there are never enough places to sit at festivals. These are great as they pack up small into your rucksack but are big enough to seat a few kids, or couple of adults.
