Any seamstresses please?

Hello
Are there any seamstresses on here to give any advice as to whether a bridesmaid dress like this can be altered in any way to allow for breastfeeding ( but not too many changes to still match the other bridesmaids?) Thank you in advance x

Any seamstresses please?

I do sew, but wouldn't claim to be a seamstress, but I think it unlikely that you could alter it, yet still match. I hope someone more qualified will come along and tell me differently though.

Thank you for coming back to me anyway.

I suppose I was hoping that the waist band could perhaps be undone so that the bodice can be lifted up to feed but I'm completely grasping at straws!

Or a flap kind of like this?

I think it unlikely that there would be enough 'spare' fabric around the waist to do that.

It looks like it has a raised waistline.
Trying to make it into a top and skirt means that the skirt will slip down if not attached to the bodice

MyEyesAreNotDeceivingMe · 18/01/2019 18:05

I think it could be potentially altered but it depends on how the bodice is constructed. If it were me, I’d unpick the bodice from the cummerbund. Then attach a toning piece of fabric to the bodice to extend the length of the bodice so that it can be tucked in to the skirt of the dress iyswim. Some subtle poppers or hook and eyes fastening then to make sure the bodice remains attached to the skirt.

So I see the dress as 2 parts - a bodice and skirt. Tuck bodice into skirt.

Just my quick thoughts.

My aim would be to not completely separate the 2 parts but keep them together at the back if poss.

Thank you so much @MyEyesAreNotDeceivingMe, just knowing it's a possibility is really helpful. I presume doing a job like that would be pricey..?

A good seamstress should be able to take one look and assess what’s possible. Have you found anyone? Have you seen the dress irl?

I don’t think it’d be a big job for a good seamstress but I’m saying that without seeing how it’s constructed on the inside! I’m assuming the zip runs down the back. I wouldn’t want to mislead but there are lots of seamstresses in my family and I think it’s the kind of job they’d get done in an evening.

If it were me I’d buy the dress and take it to a seamstress for assessment.

I know this doesn’t answer your question, but do you need to be able to bf in it?

I was a bridesmaid for my sister and had an ebf 5 month old at the time - I just went off to a side room to feed him when I needed to (the venue had a room where the bride and groom could go for a bit of space and for the registrar to conduct the pre-wedding interview bit). Obviously this might not work with the venue and/or your baby’s feeding schedule (mine is a fast eater!) but it might be worth asking the bride.
