Help! i washed my hair last night in an attempt to save myself some time this morning and it looks awful. I can dry shampoo it, that's not a problem, but why does this happen!? 😩

This happens to me too, OP! No advice, sorry, but watching with interest if that's OK!

DaisyChainsForever · 18/01/2019 09:22

Of course Grin

Before last night, when did you last wash it?

missesschmisses · 18/01/2019 12:18

Did you use too much conditioner?

Thisisthelaststraw · 18/01/2019 12:19

It’s a build up of an ingredient in the shampoo. Silicone I think. Happened to dd a few weeks back. We were equally baffled and looked it up. She washed it with different shampoo 5 times and it only got worse. Advice we found was to wash with fairy washing up liquid.

Worked first time.

I think it starts with one wash where the shampoo wasn’t completely rinsed out and the next wash just clings to the silicones already in the hair from previous wash.

There is another thread somewhere about silicone build up and using fairy liquid. Apparently Tresseme is not good according to a hairdresser. Teenage son had this, found TGel at Boots, amazing difference.

Thisisthelaststraw · 18/01/2019 12:25

Very possible the info I found was that old thread as I just googled and went into whatever popped up. It definitely works OP.

When you wash your hair use conditioner 1st then shampoo. Make sure the shampoo is only on the scalp and a silicon free one and conditioner on the length of hair. Make sure you've properly washed it all out of your hair and use lukewarm water not hot.
Also blow dry it completely, sleeping with damp hair can damage your hair.
Have you put any oils or serums in your hair? Might be worth a change too
Hope that helps, this used to happen to me a few years back xx

I get this when I -
Use conditioner on my crown
Have used the same shampoo for a while.

Sometimes I very lightly wash the top of my hair again while I rinse the conditioner out of the long ends, that helps.

Or put hairspray on my hair before I wash it - having something else to wash out seems to help weirdly.

A change of shampoo and conditioner every now and again seems to help too.

ragingchocoholic · 18/01/2019 12:27

Also kerastase shampoo and conditioner are the best I've found, a bit on the pricey side but worth it

AwdBovril · 18/01/2019 12:28

If you're using products with silicones in, you need a suitable surfactant to remove them, like sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate. If you don't use any silicones at all, you can get away without using SLS products. SLS are quite stripping for the hair, but most conditioners etc, & some shampoos do have silicones in.

FWIW, since I stopped using SLS on my hair, I don't need to wash it nearly as often. It used to be very oily, now not so much. It's a pain at first though...

Thank you everyone. m I last washed it on Tuesday. i try to go 2 days if i can, but am prone to greasy hair. ive been using L'oréal elvive for coloured hair, will look up the ingredients and see if it's that. Also will try and find the other thread. 👍🏼

If you look into the Curly Girl method, it has lists of ingredients to avoid (silicones and SLS mainly, but there are others). I'm starting to follow it even though I don't really have curly hair (slight wave) but I was looking into it for my curly haired DC and it seems like it's actually all quite a good idea for any hair really.

LustyBusty · 18/01/2019 23:22

I found when I used that same shampoo and conditioner I would often have the same problem - worst was when my hair was greasy by the time I'd dried it and I know I'd rinsed properly. Sad I went onto cheapy shampoo for a while and it felt like the hair was getting "stripped" so I guess it was like a pp said and fairy liquid would work. But I've never found anything else that makes my fine, obnoxiously minded hair behave like L'Oréal does so I do go back and just occasionally intersperse with something else

ScreamingValenta · 18/01/2019 23:28

Plantur 39 shampoo dries my hair out like nothing else.

PerverseConverse · 18/01/2019 23:30

Aussie shampoo did this to me. Fairy liquid sorted it and went back to elvive.

Azula · 19/01/2019 05:52

I used to have this problem up until I made the switch to Johnson’s baby shampoo! Grin

PseuDenim · 19/01/2019 05:56

I found L’Oreal Elvive really bad for this. The absolute best shampoo I have used is Alterna Caviar but it ain’t cheap. Kerastase is good too. Also I now rinse for way longer than I used to to make sure everything is out.

And I agree about not sleeping with wet hair, somehow seems to make it worse!

FenellaMaxwell · 19/01/2019 06:12

Superdrug own brand coconut shampoo and conditioner is silicone free and works wonders. Mane and Tail is really good too.

Nativityriot · 19/01/2019 09:29

Tresemme botanique is silicone free

Peepingsnowdrops · 19/01/2019 09:32

T gel for greasy hair is really good.

Roomba · 19/01/2019 09:36

DS1 often sleeps with wet/damp hair. His hair looks greasy again by morning when he does this. If he dries it properly first this doesn't happen. He's going through a very oily hair/skin phase atm though and will be greasy by the following teatime no matter what he does, tbf.

ColdNeverBotheredMeAnyway · 19/01/2019 09:42

Any of the 'pearly' creamy looking shampoos do this to my hair. its a build up of residue.

I use a clear shampoo to strip the residue away.
