What's the best hair detangler?

For years I have kept my hair short as I used to dye it alot and it was quite damaged. I decided to not dye my hair as much so it will grow better and after 3 years my hair is long in better condition however it just gets so knotty especially when I wash it.
I thought that it could need a bit of a deep conditioning mask on it as normal conditioners even expensive ones didn't detangle my hair one bit. But when I use the deep conditioning masks I found that it makes my hair greasy. I used to use them on my damaged hair and they never did make it greasy and they did the job. Now I have long hair no amount of conditioner, mask or leave in conditioner works. And I cannot get the brush through it.
I recently bought a shampoo and conditioner that helps a little but once my hair is dry it looks like I haven't washed it at all. I have even tried just putting the conditioner on the lengths staying away from the roots but it still happens.

My hair is thick and wavy and quite dry but only at the ends.

Sorry if that was long but what hair detangler do you recommend. I've tried the most popular children's ones as I use these on my daughter but no luck.

Wet brush pro

Revlon Uniq 1 spray is good, also Olaplex treatments.

Have you tried combing your hair with a wide tooth comb whilst the conditioner is still in it then doing it again once it's washed out?

thenightsky · 17/01/2019 22:16

I'm currently growing out my hair and trying to keep it looking lush. I've recently found this amazing stuff

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 17/01/2019 22:22

I had ridiculously tatty hair after growing it out from a pixie cut I’d had for years. It got thicker with two pregnancies v close together, and I just wasn’t used to looking after long hair anymore!

Just recently got a handle on it by-

  • Buying a Wet Brush. Faaaar better than Tangle Teezers
  • Using a hair mask once a week. Just a cheapy L’Oréal one, which prob has loads of silicone crap in it, but it solved the immediate problem!
  • Tying hair in a bun for bed
  • Washing hair less. I used to wash it daily, but have reduced this to twice a week which has made it less dry at the ends

Penny Do you have a link to your wet brush? Tangle teaser barely smooths the top layer of mine.

FlamingJuno · 17/01/2019 22:27

Cowboy Magic (Jennifer Aniston's favourite apparently) or Canter Mane and Tail (that's a horse product but works perfectly well on human hair and a bottle lasts for ages).

Night sky- I have the same problem with Tangle Teezers. They seem to skip over my mega-knot rather than actually tackle them.

You can get Wet Brushes in most Boots- sorry, I dunno how to do the fancy links!

Another vote for wet brush - I've got the one a pp linked and it's like magic.

It can make my hair static-y, but the detangling is so good!

HJWT · 17/01/2019 22:41

Tangle teezer with the handle, start at the bottle and work your way to the root, brush before washing to, recently tried the wet brush pro and as it says it is great for wet hair works well BUT when my hair is dry it pulls unlike the tangle teezer.

I have very thick frizzy curly hair.

Itwontrainallthetime · 17/01/2019 22:43

Thank you for all the suggestions ill try anything at the moment.

I have tried a few tangle teezers brushes but like others have mentioned it doesn't get the underneath of the hair just the top.

I've tried the wide tooth comb but not a wet brush I'll get one of those to try.

I have been looking at the main and tail as I've heard it's good but some have said it leaves the hair greasy. I'll just have to try and few and see what works.

I use Olaplex before shampooing (best on damp hair then left in overnight) and then it’s nowhere near as tangly after. Also make sure you’re getting regular trims, slip ends will make it tangle more. After I’ve washed my hair I apply dream ends on the ends before drying and styling.

HelloDarlin · 17/01/2019 22:49

Johnson’s spray conditioner for kids is really good. Cheap & simple!
I don’t use conditioner when washing as it weighs my hair down.

madmomma · 17/01/2019 23:03

Bumble and bumble prep spray is the nuts.

whiskyremorse · 17/01/2019 23:12

Have you tried putting a tiny amount of conditioner back through your wet hair after rinsing, avoiding the scalp. Then add your usual styling product using wet hands (makes a difference)

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 17/01/2019 23:21

You need a wide toothed comb, wet hair with conditioner rubbed in and lots of patience. Start from the bottom of your hair, detangle a few inches at a time and work up.

hartof · 17/01/2019 23:22

Lee Stafford choco locks spray! It's oil and spray in one, shake it up makes hair glossy and manageable.

dinkydolphin · 17/01/2019 23:24

Wet brush. Under a tenner on Amazon. My hair is waist length and super thick and it glides through like a dream.

Cloudsandcandles · 17/01/2019 23:26

Wet brush pro for sure! It’s my desert island item!
