How often do you get highlights done for grey roots?

I had highlights done a month ago and the greys are starting to appear at the roots. I don’t think they are quite as noticeae as when I had a darker tint but it still doesn’t look great to me!

How often do others get highlights done and is a t-section usually enough?

Thinking this is going to cost me a lot in time & money!

I last got mine done around 20th November and they need doing again soon. I alternate between t-bar and full head

I went a lighter shade to avoid an obvious roots regrowth. Every eight weeks to cover the grey.

Poppysball · 17/01/2019 18:56

Ethel do you mean you had a lighter shade all over? Whenever I’ve had a tint they’ve always done it quite dark to try and match my natural dark brown. I’ve never considered an all over lighter tint. Is this possible without using bleach?

I've quit highlights as just too expensive. I do the roots at the hairdresser every 8 weeks (all over roots) and a home t section from a box (l'oreal root touch up) once or twice in between. I hate having any root showing and I have a couple of patches of grey at the temples. It's very easy to do from the box

Poppysball · 17/01/2019 19:16

London so is the t section you do at home a tint, semi perm dye? Do you dye darker or lighter than your natural colour?
Sorry for all questions, I just don’t know what to do anymore, I just know I’m not ready for wiry greys!

Another greying brunette here!
I have mine done every 8-10 weeks and half way in between I top up the roots myself. I use the same colour as the stylist ,which I buy from an online supplier. It's not perfect, my hair's super-thick, so I l miss bits- but the colour is spot on and it saves another trip to the hairdresser.

It depends on extent of grey and your hair colour but I find Loreal magic retouch spray is a game changer for extending the time between hair appointments. (Little green bottles that come in a range of colours). I would advise going a shade lighter than you would think as IME, they come up dark.

coco2891 · 17/01/2019 20:41

I had this problem and needed it done once a month max in foils / 3 weeks ideally and it's expensive . Im naturally very dark too but love having blonde so I went for a balayage/ ombré and so my own roots at home every 3 weeks costing £7

XingMing · 17/01/2019 20:42

I embraced the grey. It was kinder on my colouring. Grey is vv fashionable, but the cut needs to be edgy IMO>

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 17/01/2019 20:55

I think it's more obvious with dark hair.
I went grey in my 30s, and have had blond highlights ever since. I have them re-done every 7-8 weeks, but due to the way by hair falls, it's only obvious to me when I scrape my hair off my forehead to apply make-up, that my roots need doing.

WatchingTheWheels85 · 17/01/2019 20:58

Every 4 weeks! The longest I've left it is 6wks and I had a solid white patch.

Poppysball · 17/01/2019 21:02

coco sorry can you explain a bit more what you have done and what colour/product do you use to do your own roots? Is the blonde just towards the ends of your hair and darker at the roots?

I go every 5 weeks and always know when I'm due to go again! I'm also lighter overall than I used to be as the root regrowth is less noticeable

coco2891 · 18/01/2019 13:04

@Poppysball hi yes let me see if I can attach a pic. I use a root touch up dark brown -number 4 can't remember the make it usually 2 for £7 in Superdrug. I'll have a look when I get home. I've just found this easier to keep on top of and cheaper while still having blonde z

coco2891 · 18/01/2019 13:09

Here's a pic all I could find at the mo

You'll have to open pic to see bigger version x

Thanks Coco that’s lovely. Mine was a bit like that before where I had let the highlights grow out and was then getting a brown tint on the roots. Trouble is I was paying £40 evey time I went for just a root touch up. I can’t justify the cost but have always been too afraid to do it myself in case I get the colour wrong. £7.00 makes it sound very tempting to try it though. Is it easy to do yourself? Do you do just he roots visible in the parting line or all roots all over head? How do you manage not to dye over the highlighted bit? Sorry for all the questions! I need to find a cheaper, less time consuming way.

When you are a brunette and you get to about 50, it pays to colour your greys a little lighter than your natural colour as your natural dark hair will start to look too harsh and dark against your skin. We've all seen women of a certain age who colour their hair too dark. The lighter colour will not change the colour of your dark hairs but will colour your greys lighter than your dark hairs. They look like highlights albeit not always even. As you go increasingly grey, you will go increasingly the lighter colour and this will work better with your ageing face. Otherwise you end up looking witchypoo

coco2891 · 18/01/2019 18:36

I put my hair into lots of plaits and work the colour in around the roots -it's a bit of a pain but been saving me loads of money. With the blonde plaited and gloves on and using the brush that comes with it I just do around one plait at a time -I can miss bits but around my face and parting is always covered coz that's the first bits I do
