Ankle boots with skirts for the chunky of leg

I would really like to get in on the ankle-boots-with-skirts thing because it looks so comfy and practical, but I'm a bit of a fatty and I have chunky calves. I have tried a few pairs of ankle boots when I've had a skirt on and it just looks wrong! Is there any particular type of boot that would be better, or do I just have to sit this one out?

Watching with (chunky-legged) interest.

Yes, you need boots with a bit of a dip at the front, so they don’t ‘cut off’ your leg at a chunky point. Your ankles should not be inside the boots IYSWIM. Almost more of a shoe boot. And heels should fairly chunky, whether low or high. Don’t even think about anything totally flat, or a delicate heel. Wear black opaque tights with black boots, again so you don’t visually ‘cut’ across your leg.

Hope this helps! I have stumpy legs 😐

Elledorado · 11/01/2019 11:48

It's a matter of the height of boots on your ankle/leg combined with length of skirt in some cases I think. I think pointy toe boots also elongate legs

GraceMarks · 11/01/2019 11:57

NiteFlights that all makes sense. I do have a pair of shoe boots which are very flattering, but I can't wear them very often because the heel is too high. I have herniated lumbar discs and arthritis in my feet so heels are pretty much out.

Do you know of any low-heeled shoe boots? Otherwise I think I'm going to have to give this trend a miss!

How about a longer skirt that just skims the top of ankle boots?

GraceMarks · 11/01/2019 13:21

CatherineMaitland that might look nice. I think it's a case of trying lots of stuff on until you find the right combination!

I think either a skirt just below the knee, or much longer. I think style advice is usually to avoid the mid length where your hem stops at the widest point of your calves.

I find M and S pretty good for comfortable block heels which aren't too high-eg 3 or 3.5cm. I know not everyone here rates M and S, but their boots can't be that unfashionable my daughters are always nicking mine .

I'd love to try this look, but I have horrific cankles, they truly are the bane of my life and mean it's trousers all the way for me.. or knee-high boots.

Makes me very sad Sad

These look good

Yearofthemum M&S boots are often good, but scrolling through just now, all the ankle boots are high at the front. I’ve had pairs from Gap, Clarks and Jigsaw. These might work www.jigsaw-online.com/product/ansti-ankle-boot/J37818_BK000 though they are a bit of a higher heel.

GraceMarks · 11/01/2019 14:39

NiteFlights the Clarks one looks good, but the Jigsaw one is too high. My body is no longer fit for purpose, or at least not for wearing heels!

My legs are allegedly one of my best features and I have never been able to wrap my head around this look. Sorry no help but watching with interest Blush

TiddleTaddleTat · 11/01/2019 18:44

I can vouch for those jigsaw Ansti boots, they look good with knee length skirts. I have them in black leather.

minipie · 11/01/2019 18:48

I’ve got stumpy sturdy legs and I can only pull off the following boots with skirts combo:

Flat leather riding style boots, but knee high.

High heeled shoe boots (pref black with black tights so there’s no visible cut off). Evenings only.

Snow boots with a furry bit around the top (pref black with black tights again) which again softens the cut off point. Although DH says I look like an elf Hmm

Yearofthemum · 11/01/2019 19:14

I agree it's really hard at the moment to get them low enough in the leg.

Can you see these seven?

Yearofthemum · 11/01/2019 19:16

No you can't! Sorry. There are loads there and not seven and most unsuitable.

I want some too which are leather not suede
Not too high in the heel
Block heel
Not too high up the ankle

NaturalBornWoman · 11/01/2019 19:33

I have this issue and I have a couple of pairs of Sam Edelman boots which are quite low heeled and low on the ankle. Also Jigsaw boots like the Ansti but last year's style which are the same shape. They are higher but still comfortable. I also have the Boden Hoxton boots in black leather, same height as the Jigsaw ones, and I found an absolute bargain pair of navy ones in Debenhams which have a slimmer heel and kind of a v shaped dip in the sides. A couple of years ago I thought I couldn't do ankle boots with skirts, but this autumn/winter I haven't worn shoes at all. Try some on, you'll find some.

GraceMarks · 11/01/2019 19:35

Year I could see 8! The tie-back detail ones actually looked like they might work. They're low at the front but not too high. Might check them out.

That's great. I'm glad.

I'll check those links too, and thank you , NBW.
