All I want is volume at the crown

That's it, that's all I want - volume at the crown. How?

I have thick fine straight hair, cut in a graduated bob. I love backcombing it up into a big hair style a bit like a beehive, but backcombing will not be good for daily styling. I find using a hairdryer and round brush utterly exhausting. I do use various products which are fine (won't list them but can do), but without proper styling they are pointless, right? I'm a bit scared of a Babyliss due to the rotating brush.

Someone in chat recommended the Revlon Pro Collection One Step Hair Dryer and Volumiser but some of the reviews said they can't get near enough the roots for lift.

A root lift perm is a bad idea, right? What else is there?

A Babyliss Root Boost Microcrimper might be what you're after.

MinorProphet · 09/01/2019 15:27

Oh, I've never heard of a microcrimper. The reviews for that are great - especially people with thin flat hair! Thanks!

It works, but I got out of the habit of using it, like so many purchases. I think I bought mine second hand.

Reccy2018 · 09/01/2019 15:44

Root lift perm could work?

MinorProphet · 09/01/2019 15:47

Have you had a root lift perm then? I heard they grow out with a kink in your hair.

I use root clips for curly hair, I dunno if they would work on straight fine hair but they are cheap!

MinorProphet · 09/01/2019 15:49

Oooh what are those?

Or for a cheaper option Velcro rollers on damp hair with root styling spray?
I opted for a non-heat option as my hair was getting damaged.

twopairsofsocks · 09/01/2019 15:54

Watching with interest.
My BHH doesn't give much root lift to my lank, chin length bob and I'm wondering about the Revlon brush too.
There's a special Dyson Airwrap for body but at £450 it's too risky.

JeremyCorbynsBeard · 09/01/2019 15:56

A bit of volumising spray and some big heated rollers. Just put a few into dry hair and leave for 10 mins. Take them out then let your hair cool before gently running your fingers through it.

MinorProphet · 09/01/2019 16:00

I have some velcro rollers actually. I forgot about them. Worth a go, definitely.

There's a microcrimper for £13 on Amazon with good reviews, won't break the bank. I agree the Airwrap is a risk for that (ludicrous) price.

A Bumpit. Google it, then you can see lots of different types/brands of them from there. As you have thick hair you should be able to get one which will be well covered by the rest of your hair. For wearing your hair down, you probably only need a little one. (If you wanted a big hair 60s ponytail you would go for a bigger one).

CatherineMaitland · 09/01/2019 16:18

You can buy packs of the clips for very little.

MinorProphet · 09/01/2019 18:27

I did buy a couple of bumpits but they looked CRAP so I may have to watch a video or two. And amazing tip about the clips although I suspect I am too lazy.

OP posts:
MinorProphet · 09/01/2019 18:38

Oh, I didn't buy actual Bumpits, it turns out. I bought a sort of bit of sponge on a comb... which didn't stay in at all. Maybe a Bumpit would work.

The microcrimper is not bad actually. I reckon it has added volume that has lasted all day. And more volume than just the hairspray on its own, iyswim. Will.report back if it still lasts tomorrow.

why are you scared of the Bayliss Big Hair brush? it never tangles my hair up. It really is prob just what you need, and if you only need help at the crown that will take you less than a minute or so.

I would also recommend a tiny dot of hair powder on the underneath - adds some oomph to the crown

MinorProphet · 14/01/2019 09:21

I guess I just thought if it would tangle anyone's hair it would be mine as it is very fine. And I am not good or practised at any of this stuff!

Volume from microcrimper still there this mornibg . My husband even said last night that my hair looked nice... Mr Oblivious so it must have looked bigger than normal! Not really big hair, more natural looking

Tried the Bumpits, which arrived this morning. Bit weird. Will take some practice.

I'm not keen on the BBH, it didn't give me much in the way of lasting volume. My hair is super fine, straight and slippery and I don't have loads of it.

I think I went off the microcrimper because I could see some of the crimps, if you've loads of hair this probably isn't an issue.

Puppylucky · 14/01/2019 20:20

Can anyone recommend the best way to use the Micro Crimper - I bought one on the strength of this thread (baaa) to use on my short hair but I can't work out how to use it! All the tutorials on line show longer hair styles with layers that can be flopped over the crimped hair but my hair is too short and fine to do that so I just end up with weird matted bits that can't be hidden. Anyone got any ideas?

SoonBeSpring · 14/01/2019 20:33

I'm hoping someone will come and tell us that the Revlon Pro Collection is magic for root lift. BBH is good for body further down but does nothing for my lank roots.

thefirstmrsdewinter · 15/01/2019 00:46

I second the hair powder recommendation. It's weightless and gets right to the root unlike a spray or mousse. I often just brush or rinse out. It's easy to reapply if you don't wash your hair every day.
I'm using the VO5 one which has an awful (though short-lived) smell but is cheap and easy to buy. I plan to upgrade next time I need some.
