Wearable and fashionable

This is my first post, and it is very un-me. So un-me that I had no other ideas for who I could talk to, so here I am. I'm 40 this year and have lost a load of weight. For the last 5 years I've been strictly dressing for comfort and camouflage. I'm still not skinny - won't ever be - but am comfortable in my own skin as a curvy size 12. I've been saving money for a big clothes shop but after years in jeggings and sweatshirts (nice ones. Still a look I love) I'd like to be a little more adventurous. But I don't even know where to begin! Where are your go to inspirations for wearable fashion? How do I know what's 'in' but isn't going to mean spending a fortune on something with a very short shelf (or wardrobe - or floor by my wardrobe) life? Fingers crossed the Mumsnet hive mind can help me!

Congratulations on your weight loss! In your position, I'd start by thinking what you need the clothes for, what colours suit you, and then search for some capsule wardrobes online for inspiration.

I try to stick to "my" colours as then I know everything I buy goes with everything else. Mine are navy blue, grey, baby pink, white, and maroon. It sounds boring but I always buy new clothes in one of these colours and I have a small wardrobe but an endless possibility of combinations.

Good luck and have fun shopping!

Congratulations on remaking your shape into one you are happy to live with!

At 40, you're in your prime and you can choose how you want to look without being accused of dressing too young, or ageing yourself unnecessarily. Chic? Edgy? Funky? Tailored? Classic? Practical? Any of these is a possibility, but until you get your eye in, you won't know where to start.

Buy a few glossy magazines and turn the pages to see what hits your eye and makes you want to try it on. Skim Instagram and Pinterest for images that make you smile. Even the Sunday newspapers will spark ideas.

Places to start... with well-fitting mix-and-match everyday basics, like jeans and jerseys, skirts and tops, and a wonderful coat. Put occasion dressing aside until you have an occasion demanding something you don't own. Then accessories. I prefer basic clothes, and distinctive accessories, but that's me, not you. Hope the musing is helpful.
