Rejuvenate complexion at 40?

Hi
I'm looking for advice on how to overhaul my skin. I am 40 and an ex-smoker (enjoy the odd glass of wine too!). I have very pale skin that isn't really freckled as I stay out of the sun and always have done. But I am prone to red blotches over my cheeks and nose which flare up when I'm hot/flustered or embarrassed etc. Am longing for creamy smooth pale skin but guess that ship has sailed for me! I have fine wrinkles around eyes but no bags or dark circles. I use Elemis, Skin Doctors and The Original but am wondering if there is anything I could do to plump or even out skin tone without buying more serums or creams? Was looking at profhilo and things of that sort but really have no clue whatsoever! My skin can be a little sensitive so have avoided any peels.
Any advice thoroughly welcome!

I've had profhilo, it's a definite improvement, but whether it was worth the significant cost I really don't think it was... It's a bit like putting a soft filter on your face, if that makes sense. It very much depends on the look you're after - if it's subtle then go for it, if you want a more definite improvement then it's fillers I guess.

Wouldn't say no to fillers but do they do anything for complexion? I don't have rosacea but wish my cheeks and nose would go red!

I also have sensitive skin and have to be careful but I find wearing colours that suit me makes a massive difference to my complexion. I'm not wearing make up at the moment and it's really noticeable that certain colours give my skin a bit of a glow without any artificial help.

If only I could stop mine glowing Grin

Sorry that was an unfortunate turn of phrase Grin I'm feeling a bit evangelical about colours at the moment - even though I've never paid to get them done - because I'd forgotten what a difference it makes to how my skin and eyes look.

I wonder if a course of micrdermabrasion might help?

Fresta · 06/01/2019 17:45

Your skin sounds like mine OP. The dermatologist suggested laser therapy on the broken veins/reddness on my nose and cheeks. I just cover redness with a good foundation though as didn't fancy lasers or the cost of it! I also find using a gentle AHA/BHA exfoliator keeps redness away- I'm using the Elemis resurfacing pads right now.

minkies11 · 06/01/2019 17:47

Have never gone beyond lotions and potions with my skin but maybe I'm just stuck with a red face Wink I use foundation and concealer at work so can manage that way and wish I could waltz in fresh as a daisy! I'll look at the microdermabrasion though and anything else that is suggested!

IPL and lasers will help with pigmentation and redness and also fine lines but quite expensive.

Vitamin c adds a glow.

Retinol is tricky if the skin is sensitive but you could try a gentle one and build up slowly? Great for any ageing and skin texture.

I’ve had great results with glycolic acid and salycylic acid but my skin isn’t sensitive so you would need to be careful and introduce one thing at a time to see if it irritated.

minkies11 · 06/01/2019 17:54

Ooh - I'll try the elemis pads - love their stuff! I really need to find a good clinic in my area as I'd like to explore the IPL/laser option. I've not really spent a lot on my skin until the last couple of months so feel it's worth investing in before I'm a completely lost cause. Did used to have skin like marble but it's gone a bit tits up since my twenties! Thanks so much for your suggestions.

Giving up alcohol worked wonders for my skin. Sorry!!!

minkies11 · 06/01/2019 18:54

Agree about the alcohol - don't indulge that often but when I do I'll have a glass of red wine which is probably the worst :(.

Perhaps look at the Avenue skincare range, they are good for rosacea and sensitive skin.

I just had my first round of Profhilo on the 1st January and I am extremely impressed at the improvement to my skin, eye lines & wrinkles and glow!
And full results are not achieved until the second set of injections in four weeks time.
So far money well spent 😊

Delatron · 06/01/2019 21:26

How much was it Charlton?

YummyMummy45 · 06/01/2019 23:16

It wasn’t cheap but I got a good January deal.
£300. This will last 6 months.

Delatron · 07/01/2019 15:25

Did you get good results @YummyMummy45 ?

AuntyJackiesBrothersSistersBoy · 07/01/2019 19:49

Splash out and buy a NuFace Mini. Use it for ten minutes 5/6 times a week. It will plump and rejuvenate your face. Money well spent. You’ll actually save, on all the creams which will not do what this little device can do. Seriously.

YummyMummy45 · 07/01/2019 22:57

So far my results are amazing! Better than I anticipated at this stage as full effects are not until the next stage in a months time.
Plumps and hydrates the face - Amanda Holden is a big fan of this.

Delatron · 09/01/2019 07:18

Sounds great!

minkies11 · 13/01/2019 22:20

Loving anything that plumps! Have been really trying this week being good, drinking water , removing make up etc and tbh my skin is starting to calm down. Had a nasty moment putting an elemis face mask on as it really stung. Can't remember but think it was the thousand flower one. But after washing off skin looked fantastic.
I have a deep crease on one side of my mouth ( not fair really as I quit smoking 5 years ago and it looks like I'm still sucking on a fag!) which I would love to zap. Maybe a filler? Don't know how they work but might investigate! Determined to end 2019 not looking like an old bag!
