Can you ever really get rid of blackheads?

Dippiedottie · 06/01/2019 14:28

I am looking for any tips to get rid of blackheads especially on my nose.
Is there any products that you would recommend? I have heard that microdermabrasion can help, has anyone any experience of this? Will a one off treatment suffice?

Just really self conscious, have tried the strips and while I can see stuff has came out on the strip my nose looks the same? Have tried the blackhead tool and it just hurts!

Many thanks in advance

Probably not black heads, more likely sebaceous filaments.

Biologifemini · 06/01/2019 14:41

NEutrogena pink grapefruit face wash
A salicyclic acid like normaderm
Then a clay mask
This will kill them off in about about 3 days
To keep them off you will need to do this regularly and use the face wash x2 per day
Also check your moisturiser

MrsLettuce · 06/01/2019 14:47

Yy they are almost certainly sebaceous filaments. Blackheads are bigger and can be squeezed out.

GobblersKnob · 06/01/2019 14:48

Sebaceous filaments shouldn't be removed coz that's how you get blackheads.

mimibunz · 06/01/2019 14:50

Regular facials?

Ollivander84 · 06/01/2019 16:43

Paula's choice BHA has helped the sebaceous filaments on my nose a LOT

Agree with pp about the sebaceous filaments. Cheap option is The Ordinary sacylic acid. I go through a bottle a month now but probably because I discovered it also prevents BO! Clear nose and nice smelling armpits - bingoWink

Flossmequick · 06/01/2019 17:17

I use a Dermaflannel for all round cleansing. You just need water with it, go gently though!

Ive been using mine for a couple of years, and its still good.

www.bravuralondon.com/products/dermaflannel

From Bravura -

BlackheadsScrubs and washes don't help with blackheads because the particles of the products are too big to reach within the pore, no matter how tiny the scrubbing beads are, they're just too big to make a difference to the blockage. Because the fibres of the dermaflannel are so small, they can effectively reach within the pores to help break down the blackheads and eventually remove them, when used daily you will see a noticeable improvement in blackheads in only a matter of weeks! The flannel is also abrasive, allowing thorough exfoliation of the skin which prevents the pores becoming blocked again with dead skin and excess oil.

arriettyspiders · 06/01/2019 17:21

I use the dermaflannel and also hot cloth cleansing. Occasionally salicylic acid as has been mentioned. I even use those little pore strips, now and then, but don't know if I'd recommend those. Sebaceous filaments seem to worsen if left (if you've ever seen anyone where they're extremely visible.)

namechangedbutneedadvice · 06/01/2019 17:50

Never heard of the Dermaflannel. Is it anything like the muslin cloth that comes with Eve Lom cleanser? That's supposed to be gently exfoliating.

arriettyspiders · 06/01/2019 17:58

No, I have one of those muslin cloths (and use for the hot cloth cleansing). The Bravura cloth has a textured, raised waffle pattern.

Flossmequick · 06/01/2019 18:03

The Dermaflannel is like a waffle fabric, I rub gently all around the face at the sink, and do circular movements on my forehead and sides of nose. Probably about twice a week.

I use it in the shower for arms, legs and shoulders, more in the summer though.

I cant explain how clean my face feels afterwards, its really really soft to touch.

I go straight to bed after and dont bother putting moisturiser on.

In the morning I use a normal flannel and water & oil of Ulay Olay moisturiser.

I use baby wipes when I get home to take my make up off, which is Garnier BB cream & mascara.

So I am very lazy and spend buggar all on my face care, but I have to say it doesnt look bad at all for my age Blush

Keep it simple I say.

Sorry Im rambling.

FloofyDoof · 06/01/2019 18:07

Every morning after washing my face, I use paula's choice 2% daily bha followed by either ren ready steady glow daily aha tonic, or pixi glow tonic. I also use a clay mask a couple of evenings a week, and serozinc spray, niacinamide, azelaic acid and hyaluronic acid serums daily. I'm currently using a sukin mask which I really like, and was only about £12ish for a big tub. Really has worked wonders with mine. Blackheads are very unusual for me now, where I used to get lots, and the appearance of the sebaceous filaments is greatly reduced. They are hardly noticeable, and I'm super pale so they really did show up before.

I also use retin-a 0.025%, but had already got the blackheads and sebaceous filaments under control before I started that. I know I use a lot of actives, but I worked up to it slowly and I have naturally oily skin which takes a hell of a lot to dry out.

I'd steer clear of the strips, they can really damage your skin.

Thanks for this thread and the info on the Dermaflannel. Might get one. And will certainly start doing more clay masks (in fact I have one on as I type!) My skin's pretty good for my age (41) but the blackheads on my nose are the bane of my life! Will be stepping up the skincare...

OHolyNightOwl · 06/01/2019 22:17

I also use Paula's Choice 2% BHA and it is brilliant for keeping my skin clear and free from milia.

For a once a week treatment nothing beats Annie's Way Arbutin and Hyaluronic mask:

It is a wash off jelly mask containing 2 forms of vitamin C, Arbutin, Hyaluronic acid and Liquorice root among other good things.

It purges pores (and clears majority of blackheads) and instantly brightens like nothing else, leaving your skin clear and smooth like a baby's.

It is not particularly moisturizing, so follow up with moisturiser and you will look airbrushed and glowing.

legolammb · 06/01/2019 22:39

I tried Paula's Choice BHA as others have mentioned above, but it made my face horribly sticky afterwards and seemed to bring me out in spots. Not sure if I used it wrongly. I'm now using La Roche Posay Effaclar range which seems to be helping a little

ReaganSomerset · 06/01/2019 22:48

Against all advice, I've always squeezed mine and then cleansed afterwards. Clean hands, scrupulous hygiene. Always worked for me (and is oddly satisfying) but would stop short of recommending you do the same as obviously we don't have the same skin and I know it flies directly in the face of advice from dermatologists the world over, who know much more than me.

Dermaflannel sounds like a good, environmentally friendly, shout.

grownup2 · 07/01/2019 09:54

I use these great value waffle microfiber cloths - big pack so I always have clean ones.

Similar to dermacloth?
Also I agree that clay masks with salicylic acid make a great difference used a couple of times a week. The cheaper ones seem fine.
But we should also remember that nobody is probably inspecting our noses closely enough to even notice a few dots.

PinkDaydreams · 07/01/2019 09:58

@TipseyTorvey can I ask you about acid and bo please? Do you just wipe your pits with it? Also which acid do you use?
Been suffering with bo for years, although others say they can’t smell anything. I can though and feel very self conscious so am interested to find out from you how you combat it please?

TipseyTorvey · 07/01/2019 14:50

@PinkDaydreams sure, I started getting BO only after DCs after never having had it unless a full sporty activity (or nightclubbing night) then read that bacteria thrive on the skin in alkaline conditions so you need to wash pits with a neutral ph soap then rub in some 'acid'. I only used The Ordinary sacylic as I already had some but it completely solved the problem. Still use deo but have gone back to it being more for a nice smell really.

AuntyJackiesBrothersSistersBoy · 07/01/2019 18:50

You could try a gentle approach with a Foreo Luna. My son has it for acne and it’s worked far better than all the lotions and potions he’s tried.

PinkDaydreams · 08/01/2019 08:10

Thank you for the bo advice!
Reading reviews and people saying they’ve been burned and got red marks, I’m hoping this doesn’t happen to me! I’m desperate to get rid of my blackheads that I’ve had for years and just can’t seem to keep my nose and chin clear of them.
