What to wear to the opera?

I’ve going to the opera this month in London. I’ve never been to one, what do I wear?

Some people go on jeans, others go in full on gowns. I live in a small city and people who go to the opera sometimes wear feather boas etc. You can't go wrong. I think most people in the stalls dress up though. If you like dressing up, it's a good opportunity and no one will think you look over dressed. Which one are you seeing??

It depends - which opera/venue? What is the occasion?

I hope you enjoy it! I've worn a nice work dress on occasions to much nicer frocks for more glamourous evenings.

I always think those who over dress are new to the opera unless it's a gala type do. I'd wear (if I wasn't just wearing my regular clothes) a going out dress. Certainly no boas etc!! Expensive looking and glamorously understated. Enjoy!!

I usually wear a very nice dress - simple but smart and something I can also wear to work. Change into heels and better jewellery.

We often go after work which is a corporate environment and have never looked out of place

rockyworth · 05/01/2019 22:11

It's sometimes different for opening and closing nights though

WanderingTrolley1 · 05/01/2019 22:12

Whatever you’re comfortable in, whether that’s a frock or jeans.

GobblersKnob · 05/01/2019 22:13

Within reason, pretty much anything you want. A bikini would probably be too little. If you are not keen on dressing up, then casual is fine. If you would love the chance to get dressed up to the nines then you probably won't look out of place. Hope you have a good time :)

Vedette · 05/01/2019 22:13

Whatever you want really. It isn't something you necessarily have to dress up for, some do , some don't. I think it is nice to 'dress' for it in the same way as you might for any night out, but I don't always myself.

Smart dress , make up .
As pps say you will see full evening dress and jeans but most people are in between those extremes .

Which venue? ENO Is very low key.

Royal Opera House just went in what I'd been wearing at work

Doobigetta · 05/01/2019 23:57

Anything goes as far as levels of smartness are concerned. Layers, though- I find theatres/opera houses/concert halls tend to get stiflingly hot, so it’s good to be able to shed some warmth.

AlaskanOilBaron · 06/01/2019 08:55

Work dress with stiletto heels.

aimee888 · 06/01/2019 13:23

Thanks for all the replies. It’s La Traviata at the Royal Opera House, since having my baby none of my old dresses fit me so will have to buy something new. Relieved I don’t need to go super fancy!

Brilliant - you're off to a lovely evening! I agree with the layers - very likely to be sweltering. Don't forget to pre-order your intermission drinks.
