I always thought TK Maxx exaggerated the RRP

Now I’ve learnt my lesson. I bought my teenage nieces passport sets for their school trip to NYC, from John Lewis. They went to TK Max yesterday and saw them less than half the price. You see I thought TK Maxx got old stock not stuff that’s still in the shops. I could weep!!

They just sent you the photo?! No message?

Jeez I know what I’d be giving them next time

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2019 12:49

They would be lucky to be getting anything from me in future after that.

Bombardier25966 · 05/01/2019 12:52

Are you sure they weren't returning them and a bit miffed because they're only getting £8 back?

Consolidateyourloins · 05/01/2019 12:55

They are very rude to message you that. Things get reduced in the post Xmas sale, you can't help it.

OhDearBeer · 05/01/2019 12:56

Feck me that's rude of them.
Xmas presents are reduced in Jan sales for everything. I wouldn't worry.

ShadyLady53 · 05/01/2019 12:58

Perhaps they were hoping you’d give them the receipt so they could return them and buy them back plus extra with the rest of the money 🙄

Processedpea · 05/01/2019 13:00

It's the same with all stuff bought for Christmas though isn't it ? I got my son a hoodie from next that was 50 and now half price but he got what he wanted for Christmas day. Annoying they sent you the photo though I would cry if I hunted presents bought for Christmas that was now in the sale ...

ourkidmolly · 05/01/2019 13:01

That's an extraordinarily rude picture to send. I'd be texting their mum or dad asking why they're sending it?

SoyDora · 05/01/2019 13:02

A bit shocked that they just sent you that picture! Are they usually rude/ungrateful with gifts?

drspouse · 05/01/2019 13:04

Don't buy ungrateful children presents.
And don't buy passport covers - they are just a pain.

BeholdTheNewTablecloth · 05/01/2019 13:09

Surely they were just checking whether to buy them with that discount?
If you had not unpacked the other sets and provided you still had the receipts you would then take the others back?
DS got a PJ Masks keyboard for Xmas so I am now singing TK Maxxx to that tune sad I didn't think they sold high end stuff but I might be getting confused with Primark/TJ Hughes.

babysharkah · 05/01/2019 13:09

All gift set type things get massively reduced in the sales, even from 24tj December if you can hold your nerve and buy then.

EnidButton · 05/01/2019 13:11

I think Shady is right. They were hoping you say to get those and you'd give them the price difference in cash. They're a bit insensitive. Especially just to send a picture with no text.

BeholdTheNewTablecloth · 05/01/2019 13:12

Ah, this was yesterday.
I would simply have replied: Bugger. I paid full price.

If I was being very generous I would have contacted your sibling to ask whether they had opened the passport sets, whether she could send them back to you to take back to John Lewis, get nieces to buy the reduced ones and then bank them the difference.

EnidButton · 05/01/2019 13:13

I wouldn't give them the difference.

EachandEveryone · 05/01/2019 13:15

I was working over Xmas soi ordered from John Lewis online.

Every time i go to nyc on holiday i spend hours in Sephora for them. Maybe i should return the favour! No, they generally arent spoilt they were both working in Macdonalds new years eve and day for £5 an hour so they do know about money.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 05/01/2019 13:16

why did they send you that picture?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 05/01/2019 13:26

Sorry, OP, just deviating a bit but On the subject of sales, I was in a big Boots a couple of days ago just before they closed and the assistants were refilling the shelves with shedloads of beauty gift packs, all supposedly sale stuff at half price. I mean there were shelf upon shelf of them. I find it hard to believe that that was all Christmas stock that they didn’t sell, it looked like they’d brought it all from the stock warehouse or something .

Is this what shops do, get a load of shite in just for the post Christmas “sales”?

Or have Boots just massively overestimated how much they would sell pre-Christmas? In past years I have been there at the beginning of January and there are just the dregs left From Christmas stuff. I just couldn’t believe the amount of stuff that was on the shelves.

lostinjapan · 05/01/2019 13:31

My parents bought me a Christmas gift last year which was later reduced by 70%, so I let them know and they returned the original and bought it at sale price. Maybe in their own rather rude and ignorant way your nieces are asking if you want to do the same and save yourself £20?

Hopefully they're not expecting you to give them the saving though, because that really would be rude.

thefirstmrsdewinter · 05/01/2019 13:34

Does the 'never knowingly undersold' policy apply?

kalefire · 05/01/2019 14:57

So rude! Pfft. I'd text back

Oh niece what a shame, if I had known I would've spent the money I could've saved on some decent nail varnish for you 🤪 haha love from your fave auntie

ichifanny · 05/01/2019 15:03

Ungrateful sods how do they know you didn’t get them in the sale ?

subspace · 05/01/2019 15:20

If I was being very generous I would have contacted your sibling to ask whether they had opened the passport sets, whether she could send them back to you to take back to John Lewis, get nieces to buy the reduced ones and then bank them the difference.

Possibly only if John Lewis hasn't also reduced them.

I was once bought a perfume set that had perfumes that were too "old" for my taste in. I went to boots, and managed to return and exchange for the exact same thing but in the scents that I would wear. Because both sets were reduced the transaction actually went refund of £3.50 and new purchase of £3.50 (originalil price maybe £20). So the return and buy cheaper thing wouldn't have worked. If the item isn't faulty, they're under no obligation to accept a return and refund at original price.

lostinjapan · 05/01/2019 15:30

Presumably you didn’t have a receipt subspace? If OP has proof of purchase and if she returns the items within the stated time period, then John Lewis absolutely are obligated to refund her the full purchase price.
