Can anyone help with a first bra? I’ve measured DD almost 10, she’s coming up as 25’’ around the band and 28’’ around the bust. That would make a 30C in the old way of measuring and a 25C in the new way Confused. She’s been in crop tops for a long time but really she needs something a bit more supportive. Not sure really what is out there, even 30C is hard to find. Any ideas?

Re the mixed changing, could your daughter wear the Debs bra for support and a crop top over for coverage on pe days only?

RedCabbageStains · 06/01/2019 10:45

The John Lewis sporty crop tops come up very tight on the band, so might be more supportive.

id stick with crop tops. She doesnt necessarily need as much support as you think she might. It wont be comfortable to wear the wrong size bra.

I bought some bras for my 10 year old but within weeks of spending £20 on bloody bras, shes grown again, doesnt fit them and she mostly wears sportbra type croptops anyway which provide support, and yet grow with her.

I used to be a 28 back until I put weight on - Bravissimo and eBay are great. eBay has a lot of brand new bras in last seasons colours and you can often find more unusual sizes.

I'm not a teenager but I measure as 26E or 28DD and never wear a bra, just these bralettes from m&s. They are supportive enough for everyday wear because my breasts are not large at all, barely a handful.

If she's happy in them I would stick with crop top, sports bra, bralette type things.

Weightwatching I measured the actual band size of DD's "32AA" bras and unstretched it is under 25". They are really tight.

Teen bras are in such limited sizes and tend to only be AA/A cup. It is very difficult to get bras the right size suitable for a child.

While braguru and others are telling us not to add 5 inches to the band, manufacturers are doing exactly that. My own bras are 34F/G. I measured them and again they are only about a 28" band without being stretched.

StatisticallyChallenged · 06/01/2019 13:16

Most bra manufacturers aren't adding - your bra band should be stretched when on so the unstretched measurement isn't accurate. If the material isn't under tension it won't provide support

WeightWatching2019 · 06/01/2019 13:35

@StatisticallyChallenged is correct.

Bra manufacturers do not add inches. If you look into where this “plus 4” originally came about you’ll see it has its roots in 1950s Hollywood - it’s become instilled as ‘the thing to do’ but actually has no basis in reality at all!

It is crazy to measure the bra band unstretched - the whole point is that the bands do stretch as they are worn!

So, I repeat - please don’t put your daughter in a 32 band with those measurements.

WeightWatching2019 · 06/01/2019 13:38

I’ve just bought a brand new bra which I haven’t worn yet. My band size is 30 inches. I’ve just measured it, unstretched, and the unstretched size is 23 inches. Clearly it’s a meaningless number. The whole point is that the material is designed to stretch when worn, to 30 inches.

Primary is where I took my then 10yo (!) to find something with a narrow back and actual cups. 28B worked out ok, but a 26C would have been better if one had been available.

GobblersKnob · 06/01/2019 13:39

Tesco's do nice 'sport' crop tops which dd lives in.

FuzzyShadowChatter · 06/01/2019 13:45

My daughter is a similar size-ish and she prefers USApro crop tops. I tried taking her bra shopping once, had this great plan of her trying on various things and finding what was most comfortable for her - and we ended up with one USApro sports bra and more USApro crop tops. At least she knows what she likes.

I do like some of the recommendations here, quite a few I haven't seen before that I might show my daughter, though I wish white wasn't the main colour for these. I always worry that they'll be see-through, but that might just me from my experience from many many years ago and my mother steering me to solid colours as my dark nipples showed through the white ones.
