Looking 'groomed' with curly hair

I am intrigued by the curly girl method and currently have my hair plopped and slathered with gel in anticipation of some crunch scrunching later.... i am willing to try conditioning from the scalp and no heat, brushes or shampoo.

But! I like to look very groomed at work so i'm used to heat styling it almost straight and putting it into a sleek bun.

Fulltime curlies - give me your inspiration for groomed hairstyles pleeease!

I'm not sure there is one, sorry to say. A great cut with a stylist who understands curl is a huge help, but if you do learn the secret, please share it with me and the several million curlies who'd like to have the choice of groomed v unruly.

GemmeFatale · 04/01/2019 15:12

I think you can do it if you allow your curls to be the only not perfectly groomed bit of you. Or if you embrace the French look. Or if you have magic groomed curls that look like a hairdresser spent hours with you that morning

Following with interest. Spent loads on the cantu stuff and curly hair products but the methods leaves my hair v greasy and dull. I sometimes I give up and use cheap L'Oréal stuff on offer and my GHDs to achieve pro looking hair for work.

I think curly hair looks groomed and professional! Look at the women in these pictures, they look fab! www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/wavy-hair-type-2/top-10-curly-hairstyles-for-work

Honestly, I think it's a matter of resetting the way you think about your curls. Curly hair - if clean, well-cut, and well cared for - is not "ungroomed" just because it doesn't lie flat and smooth like straight hair does.

I sometimes get straight-haired mums of curly-haired daughters asking how to look after their hair - a short conversation often reveals they mean "how can I make it behave the way straight hair does." It's never going to, but that doesn't make it "worse" than straight hair - just different!

Curling tongs. I kid you not. I have thick, curly, frizzy unruly hair and have tried every method under the sun. Started curling with tongs a couple of months ago and it has changed my life. I now have evenly sized, shiny, frizz free curls.

I've since had a lot of shorter layers put in and i look a bit more groomed again. I've been experimenting with different sized tongs - i love a tapered wand for smaller curls, kind of wild and big. I've also used a large barreled wand to make big smooth waves and that looks really done, better than if I'd tried to straighten. Cause my hair is naturally curly, the tonged curls/waves don't drop.

UnaOfStormhold · 04/01/2019 16:38

I find that getting the very top smooth (I comb through a little smoothing spray) makes a big difference - it makes chaotic curls elsewhere look intentional!

OnlineAlienator · 04/01/2019 16:44

Xia that blog is brill i'm going to try some!

Curling tongs look good the first time i use them but over time its like my hair gets immune to it and just does its own thing regardless!

Interesting curly daughters - mine is poker straight!!

I do LIKE curly hair but i need to be super formal at work and it just doesnt seem to give off that air like a severe bun!

A good cut

And possibly looking at an up do for day 2, as mine is always scruffy at the back after sleeping on it (and by day 3 has formed small dreadlocks at the nape of my neck!)

I am rubbish at having curly hair, but get compliments on Day one. Following as would like to learn some up do tricks. Didn't realise I might look unprofessional because of my hair (although I do really... As I am one of those generally unkempt looking people never mind how hard I try!)

Fantasisa · 04/01/2019 18:04

Impossible, my curls behave beautifully when I’m slobbing around at home but rarely behave for a night our/job interview! I’ve decided they are the most temperamental part of me Grin

OnlineAlienator · 04/02/2019 10:52

Sooo, i tried curlygirl for a month and didnt like it. I got fed up of working really hard every single day to preserve one look. The products are expensive and if your supply chain/routine is interrupted, tought tits sugar, your hair will look like shite today -
no flexibility.

And i felt like a dishcloth rather than smart at work, even though ppl complimented me on it.

People that can make it work look fantastic, i just aint on of em! Grin

The best way I found to look groomed was to gather my curls up in my hand, kind of smoosh them to the back of my head and wedge in about 5 million bobby pins. I still leave some 'play' in my hair, so it's not pulled straight and you can see the curls and random bits sometimes stick out/hang down but it's the most reliably professional I can get mine looking. Unfortunately sometimes it ends up looking a little grecian-wannabe. Oh and also you really need to go all in with the bobby pins or it all unravels.

Popped and slavered 😂😂🤣
