How often do you feel you need to have a facial for it to be worth it?

A friend has a facial once a week (looks great, but always has) and I feel that I need to start looking after my skin more.

Early 50s and I look old and knackered. I don't feel old (though I am knackered) but think that my skin is letting me down; other than cleansing and moisturising I don't do much else, so I'm thinking that facials might be the way to go. I can't afford every week but could probably stretch to once a month. Is it worth it or a waste of time if I can't have it done more often?

I have a facial once at 8-10 weeks. My issues are dehydration (even though I have combination skin) and whiteheads.

What are your main issues and what are you hoping to achieve through facials?

Even though you get facials you still need to build up a serious home routine. Perhaps read about AHA, BHA, retinol, they're really useful. Make sure to wear SPF (30 or 50!) every single day of the year!

Make sure you drink enough water and eat fruit and cut sugar as much as possible, it really makes a difference

Also, not sure where you are but check if you can find GUINOT facials. I swear by them.

HarrySnotter · 02/01/2019 07:26

I wear SPF 30 every day (in my moisturiser) as I had skin cancer last year and ultra careful now. Thanks for the info, will Google away!

Issues I would say is general 'saggy' texture and look to my skin.

No problem at all! I'm happy for you that you're healthy now

Guinot really makes a difference, I promise. I had them for 6-7 years now, regularly. Unfortunately no experience with other facials:(

proseccoaficionado · 02/01/2019 07:29

@HarrySnotter OHHHH! My mom is the same age as you are, and she's been getting a treatment called "age summum" from Guinot. It really made a difference, for your exact same problem.

HarrySnotter · 02/01/2019 07:31

Have just Googled salons near me that offer Guinot and there's one in the town I work in - must be fate! Grin

Every half term. I invariably end up with any therapist doing me on the side : hair beauty etc. If you know them well enough ask if they work freelance

proseccoaficionado · 02/01/2019 07:32

@HarrySnotter so happy to hear that. You'll fall in love with them. I am not sure how expensive they are, but in the country I live in they're more than reasonably priced, especially once at 10 weeks. Yaaaay!

Happy new year, OP! ❤️

HarrySnotter · 02/01/2019 07:35

Blimey it's expensive! How much do think is average to pay for a decent facial? Might have to be every 6 weeks rather than a month!

@proseccoaficionado to be fair if I only get it done every so often it seems worth it if it will help so I'll happily tighten my belt a bit. It really knock your confidence when your skin looks rubbish doesn't it.

@HarrySnotter how much is it in the UK? Tbf I get them once at 10 weeks, more than enough. And yes, the therapist is saying that you need to have them as often as possible. Ignore and do your stuffGrin

proseccoaficionado · 02/01/2019 07:37

@HarrySnotter I had acne, so trust me, I know exactly what you're saying. Couldn't even bare looking in the mirror

LesLavandes · 02/01/2019 07:43

Guinot facials are excellent

MitziK · 02/01/2019 07:46

If you can afford once a month, get it done once a month. If you can only afford every other month, then do it that way. They always make a difference, no matter how infrequent they may be.

I can't afford any - the nearest I get is when the threading lady splodges Aloe Vera gel over my chin eyebrows once a month if I'm lucky, but when I could afford such things, I found that even a relatively cheap one, as long as it involved some form of facial massage/cleansing, left me looking as though I'd had 12 hours of blissful sleep on a hundred feather beds.

HarrySnotter · 02/01/2019 07:55

The salon near me charges £89. It's in a small town but that doesn't sound like small town prices. Having said that I have nothing to compare it to so you may all tell me that's cheap! Grin

proseccoaficionado · 02/01/2019 08:04

@HarrySnotter which of the treatments is £89? If it's the age summum it makes sense. Anyway the therapist should analyse your skin and tell you exactly what you should get!

Icantbelieveitsnotnutter · 02/01/2019 08:09

I have Elemis facials for around 30 pounds every 2 months or so. They are lush! The biotec ones include a fancy machine that deeply cleanses and is anti aging. It clears my chin acne and people generally think I'm 6-12 years younger than my true age, so it must do some good!

MitziK · 02/01/2019 08:23

Stuff that. For a fiver more, considering I'm looking at the poshest salon in the poshest part of my town (it's in what i think would be called an 'Old Money' area), you'd get a facial, a manicure AND a back massage and would emerge from there around three hours later feeling brilliant.

Unless you're living somewhere incredibly fancy (ie, stately home on every corner fancy), up to forty quid should find you something that feels amazing. But probably far, far less.
