Honest opinions - does water help at all?

I read again and again that drinking water helps skin, hair, energy levels etc

If I drink water I seem to need the loo constantly and I'm in a job where I cannot use the loo often.
Does it get better? Will my body adjust? I really want to experience the benefits of they genuinely exist and will take the pain to gain if it works.
Anyone here converted into a partial goddess/ god by drinking water??

Re bladder capacity it gets better. I never used to drink water and now rarely drink anything else.

I drink at least two litres a day. I have a refillable bottle on my desk at work which usually I drink two of. I have two large glasses before I get to work and at least two large glasses at home of an evening.

When I first started I wondered if I’d ever stop needing the loo. But now go no more than normal, so 3/4 times a day.

Me too, @Crunched - we should form a club Grin

Sallygoroundthemoon · 02/01/2019 12:35

It depends on your size. I'm small so if I drank a couple of litres a day I'd be permanently in the loo. Plus I have a job where I don't always have easy access to a toilet. So I drink enough not to be dehydrated but don't go overboard. The times I've had more it's made no difference to my skin or energy, I've just produced a lot of wee that is the colour of water (tmi). So I must be drinking what I need.

iaskMNeverything · 02/01/2019 12:41

Sip it rather than down it

If you're going to the toilet too much after the first few days you're drinking it too fast

BobbinThreadbare123 · 02/01/2019 12:42

Just don't overdo it. Women should aim for just over 2 litres of fluid a day; notice 'fluid'! This can be tea, juice, water etc. Too much water plus all other drinks can give you headaches and stop your organs working correctly. Can also drop your sodium levels and give you cramps.

If I do about 1 L of water plus my handful of brews per day, I'm good. I feel less tired and eat less at lunchtime.

Todayillbebetter · 02/01/2019 22:58

Ahhh right so now I have a plan.
A glass of water dipped until I get to work. Sip another throughout lunchtime and then drink two more large glasses however I like when I get home!
I'm a teacher...I can go at 8.30, 10.10, 1.15 and after school. So I struggle for the 3 hours in the middle of the day when I cannot leave my classroom....
Nightmare for water drinkers! But I am determined to drink some water and tea and stop being fat.

Sipped not dipped

I think it’s an urban myth or similar that we need to drink gallons of water a day. I think some beauty editor probably started the trend and the same bollox gets regurgitated by everyone. I particularly loath the idea that it’s “ flushing toxins” , like your body doesn’t already have a mechanism for doing that. ( ask any Dr). In addition I read an article by a dietician who worked with the British Olympic team who stated that athletes who train for hours during a day are not required to drink some of the ridiculous amounts of water are promoted by some areas. That being said I feel better for drinking some water in addition to my teas and coffee a day I just don’t go overboard. ( maybe a litre). If you increase your fruits and veg too since they have a water content and all adds up to a general feeling of well being and improved skin.

SpiritedLondon · 02/01/2019 23:51

Here’s a link but there are a number of articles if you don’t like this one!

Todayillbebetter · 03/01/2019 07:23

Thanks spirited.
I have read those articles in the past yet so many people are adamant that it has a marked effect on how they feel and in some cases, look....
Not enough research into this. I never get thirsty. Does that mean I don't really need to drink? I guess the only way to know if it makes a difference is to drink more.
I had two glasses yesterday. No difference and lots of weeing haha

I’m in the ‘urban myth’ camp. I think it may have been started by a dr somewhere in continental Europe about 100 years ago and revived by some beauty editor somewhere. I’ve tried upping my water intake at times and all it did was make me pee more.

Yes, clearly we need water but plenty of it comes from food and other drinks. We live in a cool climate most of the time, except summer 2018, when I’m sure we all noticed our fluid intake increased naturally.
2L includes teas coffees other drinks and food. And I agree with a pp, our bodies are extremely efficient at flushing ‘toxins’ (what IS a toxin??)

I drink enough for my thirst.

littlemeitslyn · 03/01/2019 11:35

I never drink water 😬

TheHoundsofLove · 03/01/2019 12:56

I'm also in the 'urban myth' camp about needing to drink litres of water. But, I have noticed a huge difference in my skin when I swap my wine for water! Grin So, I think laying off the alcohol is key!

theredjellybean · 03/01/2019 13:01

Drinking litres of water is not a miracle anti aging anti obesity anti everything, cure all.
Its rubbish, it's not water per se it's about being adequately hydrated.
If you like squash or cordial or low sugar drinks they are just the same as plain water.
What do posters think is in fizzy drinks or fruit juice or even tea and coffee... Mostly water!!!!
The caffeine in tea and coffee is not enough to dehydrate you as the water content in a mug of tea is greater than the diuretic effect of the caffeine.
I hate water and drink 8-10 cups of coffee a day. And I am still alive, healthy glowing skin, bouncy hair, no bloating or weight gain....

SpiritedLondon · 03/01/2019 13:07

I recently went on a pretty strict diet pre Christmas and cut out a lot of wheat and sugar. I increased my water consumption ( because I am crap at drinking) and increased consumption of leafy veg and my skin looked really good. It’s hard to attribute the change to just the water since I made a number of quite dramatic changes. My parents generation didn’t walk around with bottles of water and seemed to survive pretty well. Make a small increase and see how you go.... your bladder will adjust after a few days

Haffiana · 03/01/2019 14:02

I low carb, so drink at least 4 litres water a day. I think it may be more especially since I bought myself a sodastream.

The thing about peeing - if you up your liquid intake then your bladder capacity will also increase significantly (except for coffee drinking which is a bladder irritant for me). I don't go to the loo any more often than I used to when I drank less. It can take a while for the capacity to catch up with the intake though!

Bloodynorthernrock · 03/01/2019 21:17

I am amazed by the attitude to hydration here...yes it's fluids we need but that's because our bodies get water from what fluids we have and from some of our food. Water is a basic need!
