Ethical fashion brands please

As the thread title say; I'm looking for recommendations for ethical fashion brands.

This year I'm going to try to reduce the amount I buy but I will need to buy some clothes this year, both formal workwear and informal clothing. In order to reduce my spend anything I purchase must be good quality.

By ethical I mean:

  • Treatment of workers - doesn't have to be a workers collective or similar although yes please to those too but treat staff ethically and pay all workers a good wage.
  • Sustainable.

And preferably:

  • No cruelty to animals - I eat meat and wear leather shoes but I'm looking for garments produced with no cruelty.

Another alternative is to use old material and make your own bag. I have done this and it is very satisfying although it is a casual look and not suitable for everyone’s needs.

Love those tights Greyhound. As I buy tights more often than I buy dresses for example I will make a tentative first purchase from Thought Clothing to check out their sizing soon.

Thanks for the recommendation for Skunkfunk Sadik.

Nancy Dee have some gorgeous clothes Applesaregreenanded I'll buy from them, Bibico are good too. I agree that I'm not sure about made in the UK being a guarantee that workers will be treated well.

I'm in London later this month Floisme, I'll take a look in Wall & Jones while I'm there.

It's leather shoes and bags that I'm after but I can't sew PaulHollywoods. Fwiw I do think it's possible to produce leather ethically but I'm not aware of anywhere that does. Untanned leather may be best.

For leather bags I was recently on the Mimi Berry website and noticed that they use vegetable tanned leather, which I thought was interesting: www.mimiberry.co.uk/pages/our-leather

As much as I like DeMellier I think their ethics extend to their business (with donating vaccines) rather than their products if that makes sense.

And I was going to say the Celtic and Co use leather that is a by-product of the food industry, plus they will repair/ re-sole their boots. I've had a pair of sheepskins boots which have lasted ages - I haven't had them re-soled yet but I did need a panel replaced on one boot which I managed to wear a hole in (due to my gait and foot fall rather than leather quality).

This might work for you ( I personally find People Tree and Seasalt too casual for work) but have looked at a couple of things from here ( changing jobs so waiting to work out what I need)

For formal suits and tailoring (I work in the City) a great ethical option is midcentury or 80s vintage. Lots of sharp tailoring - perfect if you are an hourglass like me - in quality fabrics that have lasted the test of time. Nipped in blazers, pencil skirts, 80s tapered trousers or 40s wide legs, draped navy 40s crepe dresses etc.

Look on Etsy.com for the best selection. Or Blackout II in London is very good. And remember to pair with modern shoes, handbags and hair if you don't want to look like you have stepped out of a 50s magazine ad!
