Skin care, what age to start?

DD is 11, her skin is looking a little dry. Is there a good age to start a skin routine and what should it be?
I am clueless, rarely wear make up and am pants at skin care etc

Hiya,
I'm not a big make up person but I started with skin care about her age. A gentle foaming face wash in the shower and a daily moisturiser with SPF. I used Olay complete (as it is now called) and I think the SPF and getting into the routine of looking after my skin was good.

At 11 I would go very gently, especially as it seems she's dry rather than oily.
Look at the La Roche Posay ranges maybe? My dd is 15 now but swears by the range for oily skin which she's used since she was about 12.

I also emailed Neal's Yard when I wanted to buy her some "nice" skincare and it was probably the best customer service ever- they sent me a really detailed personalised email back but didn't foist products on me.

Avoid ranges which seem "simple" Wink but are anything but, and actually strip the skin and load it with harsh stuff. Go for a non foaming cleanser as foamy ones are drying.
The skincare gurus on here rate Cetsphil cleanser and Cerave moisturiser iirc.

I started skincare at 10 as I had spots & oily skin. I think my mum got me Clearasil moisturiser but that doesn't sound appropriate for your dds skin.

Thanks and keep em coming.

Not a foaming cleanser as mentioned above ! Surfactants can be very drying .

Something teen focused and gently - look at the dermalogica teen range if in budget or if not LRP Toleriane range .

Cerave do great moisturizers and cleansers too - Id second everything @bookme said !

Watch Dr Sam Bunting and Dr Emma wedgeworths YouTube video on teen skin .

Also a proper sunscreen over a moisturizer with spf is advisable as most aren’t broad spectrum x

I'd get her the cerave hydrating cleanser, cerave am cream with spf and cerave moisturising lotion for evening.

My daughter is nearly 13 and I have purposely not introduced her to anything. Her skin is still currently perfect and she doesn’t wear make up. I don’t think that young skin which is in good condition needs anything at all bar some water and perhaps a bit of Nivea or similar on dry patches. Once she starts with make up I’ll look at what she should use to remove it but I know that generally my skin is much better if I don’t use anything when I’m mkeup free. Which is sadly less and less as I get older

Sunscreen is essential . As is a gentle cleanser and moisturizer .

@Amaaboutthis I used to think the same about makeup and skin being clearer when not wearing it.

Now I think it is because people don't remove makeup properly e.g. double cleanse a la Caroline Hirons.

I use the hydrating Cerave cleanser as a cheaper replacement for the ultra calming Dermalogica one. It’s briiliant on my reactive skin but my 10 year old says it stings hers.

I bought her some of the Cerave moisturiser with spf in. It arrived by post do I couldn’t check the details till it arrived. It doesn’t say anywhere on it if it is both uv a and b. Does anyone know? If it’s not got a good spf I think I’ll try and find her a general moisturiser and carry on with her current la Roche Posay over the top, although at the moment she only uses that in the summer.

Should children use spf all year round on their faces? My DD does take vitamin D and is very pale.

All you Cerave hydrating Cleanser users, do you wash it off as it comes or do you use a flannel or cotton wool?

My 12 year old has just started getting dry bumpy skin around his cheeks, jaw and chin. I've been convincing (forcing) him to rub some nivea creme on before bed which has helped a lot
