Products for 11 year old dd's curly hair

Can anyone help my dd please? She hates her hair at the moment. It's naturally quite curly but goes frizzy and she hates it.

Things have improved a bit recently - I took her to have it cut and they put a few long layers in so it wasn't weighed down so much. She's been looking at curl defining products online, can anyone recommend a good one please?

Also - is it right that you shouldn't brush curly hair or it will make it frizzier? She is ASD and I help her with her hair in the mornings before school, how can I do a ponytail etc without a brush??

It's the lack of neatness that will be a problem. Because of the ASD she is really fussy about her hair.

I have curly frizzy hair and swear by boots curl creme, which is a big tub of cheap glop for less than £2.

ByTheSea · 01/01/2019 14:04

Never brush curly hair when it's dry.

AnnaMagnani · 01/01/2019 14:06

Never ever brush curly hair! At most an Afro comb. Ideally enough product that it can be fingers only.

And yes, yes to Curly Girl. has transformed my hair, I wish it had existed when I was 11. I'd have been spared 30 years of loathing my hair.

I am currently loving Jessicurl products, also like Boucleme but you can do it a lot cheaper. Cantu is great.

The key is to never let a brush, fine toothed comb, silicones or SLS touch the hair. And loads of conditioner.

Thank you, we are off to Boots today so will have a look.

bythesea do you use it on damp or dry hair?

Will an Afro comb get the tangles out?

Definitely curly girl. Another vote for boots curl cream

Never brush it! Superdrug have a better range of curly products than Boots. Try the ranges for black hair such as Cantu. Superdrug also do their own range. They also have a third off lots of products at present. www.superdrug.com/afro-hair-care

AnnaMagnani · 01/01/2019 14:23

An Afro comb can get tangles out of black hair so it can definitely get them out of curly white hair Grin

The hair is tangled because it is dry from SLS and bad conditioner. If you go full curly girl, you should be able to run your fingers through it when wet and detangle it then. Mine used to be matted and horrible - I don't even comb it now!

Me too, but they don’t make it anymore!

The next best thing I have found is “Curls Unleashed leave in conditioner” and the shdmpoo from this range from Boots

from Boots

I have very thick curly hair and I use CANTU products, only recently found them and they really work for me.
They don't have all the crap that other products have so is kind to hair too.

Sexnotgender · 01/01/2019 14:26

Totally agree on curly girl method.

If you're on Facebook there's a U.K. and an international group for the method.

Definitely worth joining, you'll get great advice.

No not an afro comb, they are horrible!
I'm mixed race with curly hair and an afro comb does nothing for me but create more tangles!!
You will need a denham brush if she can tolerate it, with a spray leave in conditioner.
Also tangle teezer is the only thing my son will use he has asd and thick curly afro.
All my kids have thick curls and i find the absolute easiest way to remove knots is to brush it when the conditioners in and rinse and blow dry, for my daughter i use a soft bristles brush and moisturising product to smooth hair into ponytail, and sleep in a bandana. Then in the morning we just use some product and soft brush to tidy it up again. My asd son wont tolerate any product after his hair is washed so I buy him an extra moisturising conditioner from the black hair shops.

Love cantu! I use the curl activator and define and shine custard.

BikeRunSki · 01/01/2019 14:29

OMG - Boots are making Curl Creme again!!!!! Smile it’s nit been available for at least a year!

Palmers’s leave in conditioner spray is good too

I find all products work best used sparingly on wet hair.

My hair is Caucasian, the Curls Unleashed range I think is for Afro-Caribbean hair, but it makes my hair lovely.

I think they still do the Curl Creme. I use it, and it's in all the Boots stores around here.

I like Palmer's Olive Oil shampoo and conditioner from Superdrug, it fits with the Curly Girl method and doesn't break the bank.

On a school morning, damp her hair with a water spray then scrunch through some curl creme. When it's dry, give it a quick scrunch again then put it in a highish pony.

cowmop · 01/01/2019 14:37

I never use a comb or brush on my hair. It's very thick and hugely curly. I just run my fingers through it when it's wet. I think you just have to not worry about having it smooth into the ponytail. It looks nice curly. I can say that now I'm 37!

Pearlgrey1 · 01/01/2019 14:43

I only use a wide tooth comb on my daughters hair when wet with conditioner on to remove aN knots ect (combing through the bottom sections then up to prevent any dragging)
Products wise cantu in the summer when it's frizzy from sun damage and also the mix chicks range it's good and not to heavy on her fine curls. For quick days I braid the night before then spritz with water in the morning aN smooth the edges with a dab of conditioner.

whenwillthetwitchstrike · 01/01/2019 17:34

We tried the curly girl method for 8 weeks over the summer and it just left DD's hair unmanageable. Now, we wash her hair with curly girl approved shampoo & leave in conditioner, comb it with a wide tooth comb, partially dry it, French plait it and leave it in plaits for two or three days until we go through the procedure again. We take it out on a Saturday after sport and she wears it loose for the rest of the weekend.
