So where do rich people buy their good quality clothes?

I’m looking to minimise my life this year, and would love to find great quality clothing that actually lasts! I’m not finding that on the high street at all.

I’ve heard of Brora - where else is great?

I think you might need to narrow down your style preferences and potential budget here.... the super rich are buying couture for example which Is presumably not what you’re after

LunaTheCat · 01/01/2019 12:13

I am definitely not rich. I like to buy decent quality but in sales mostly-Toast , Brora
I find Cos great quality on street - Good fabrics, well made and pockets!

PinkysEars · 01/01/2019 12:18

Depends on the look you're after too. Independent "country" shops sell the tweedy look and the clothes are well-made and hard-wearing. It suits a very particular lifestyle though.

I think people who are aristocratic (rather than rich) probably buy comparatively few new clothes - a lot of what they wear lasts literally generations and I don't think they're necessarily fussed about looking a bit worn either.

Floisme · 01/01/2019 12:27

I’m not rich either - I buy mostly second hand these days - but the brands I’ve been impressed by, quality wise, are:
John Smedley (knitwear)
Margaret Howell
Joseph
Brora
Celtic & Co
Toast (although signs they may be slipping)
Me and Em (but not bought for a while)

On the high street, I think Uniqlo quality is far from perfect but the best of a pretty bad lot at that price point. I would probably buy Cos more if I lived near a branch (can’t get on with their website). And I’ve heard good things about Arket quality but not yet bought.

nooddsocksforme · 01/01/2019 12:31

cashmere is a great choice for quality knitwear . Brora is lovely but overly expensive. Jigsaw have quite a few cashmere jumpers in their sale and they are lovely. It’s good for basics too.

Plumpcious · 01/01/2019 12:35

What types of clothes are you currently wearing that aren't lasting? My clothes last for years and they're all high street bought, so I always wonder what non-lasting clothes people complain about.

Maybe it's the fibre? I prefer natural not synthetic. Learnt years ago that acrylic jumpers bobbled easily so now will only buy cotton or wool.

I mostly wear shirt-style blouses in either cotton or linen, so don't have much experience of the fibres that are prevalent in other styles of tops.

Synthetic trousers, on the other hand, seem to last for ages. I think I've worn some of my work trousers for up to ten years!

And what laundry detergent do you use? I always use a colour care one, so fading colour isn't an issue. And rarely use a tumble dryer. Don't know if that makes a difference but I'm alarmed by how much fluff is left on the filter.

Floisme · 01/01/2019 12:57

I agee about tumble dryers and about careful washing in general - in fact I think cheap clothes often need more careful washing than expensive ones. But I don’t think it’s all down natural fibres - some modern cotton and linen are shit.

Floisme · 01/01/2019 12:58

Soz - I don’t think it’s all down to natural fibres.

SpiritedLondon · 01/01/2019 13:33

When I’m not very flush I look at eBay for second hand and have had some absolute bargains with dresses in particular - I look out for Jaeger, Hobbs, COS, Fenn Wright Manson etc. I scored a gorgeous pink silk dress from LK Bennet for about £10. I think on the High Street Cos and Arket are doing the best ranges for my taste but I’m city based and I don’t think they would translate so easily into a country style if that’s what you’re after. John Lewis have some interesting own brands too. I think British heritage brands like Jaeger, John Smedley, Barbour, Burberry ( sort of) Aquascutum, and Osprey are interesting - non flashy but good quality. I can find pieces that fit into my wardrobe but I think that different women with a different style & taste would also find something to suit too

CatherineMaitland · 01/01/2019 14:06

I'm not remotely rich, and I don't care about looking rich, but I've found good-quality things in a whole range of shops from Top Shop onwards. This year I've bought trainers from John Lewis & Partners own brand, a dress from French Connection, some high-waist trousers from Top Shop, a top from Bravissimo, a skirt from Massimo Dutti, a dress from Pure Collection, leggings from Mint Velvet, and a bag and top from & Other Stories - all of which I'd say are decent quality. And yet I've seen (sometimes bought) other things from all of those places which aren't good at all.

I like Uniqlo but sometimes it's a bit sloppy with fibres coming apart easily in jumpers etc. But for the price point it is hard to complain.

DianaT1969 · 01/01/2019 14:45

I think this is the type of thing you are looking for
carinahildebrandt.com

BikeRunSki · 01/01/2019 14:51

Seasalt, but you need to like their style

I agree largely with natural fibres, but after years of insisting on onlywearung natural fibres, I have realised that a bit of synthetic (< 20% or so) improves stretch and longevity/hardwearing. I gave up on cashmere jumpers, because the elbows kept wearing through in a few months.

kindnessisnotaweakness · 01/01/2019 16:41

Some great suggestions here, thank you! I have bought a few things from Cos before and the quality has been really good. I’ll be looking at all the suggested shops tonight.

A bit more off the beaten track, but check out

old town

Carrier Company

You must create

These are all pretty utilitarian styling, I guess it depends if that is to your taste.

mizu · 01/01/2019 16:56

I'm far from rich too but shop TOAST mostly in the sales and eBay as well as COS.

EffOrf · 01/01/2019 17:39

I buy a lot from Seasalt, I am not rich though so tend to buy in the sale also I buy it from Next Clearance or John Lewis
