Thanks, in advance.

Mark Anderson! In West Dulwich. He's amazing and has changed my hair.

Whitney168 · 29/12/2018 20:33

That was quick, brilliant, thank you!

Tell him the funnel lady sent you. Grin

Whitney168 · 29/12/2018 20:37

Intriguing ...

Do you find you have to go less often than to other hairdressers because the cut is so good? Price is going to be higher than I usually pay, but time will be an issue too.

Totally. The first cut I had lasted six months and only really started needing attention in the last couple of weeks. The initial cut grew into a longer cut rather than looking like a cut that had grown out, IYSWIM. I guess frequency would depend on your style and length but he reckons three cuts a year would be perfect for me.

DianaT1969 · 29/12/2018 20:42

I went to him in April for the first time on MN recommendation. My hair was just hitting my shoulder. I didn't need to go back for a cut until October. It grew out so well. I wouldn't have it cut by anyone else now.
He may be away for New Year, but email him and he'll get back to you.

DianaT1969 · 29/12/2018 20:43

He works weekends and evenings too, which is so convenient.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 29/12/2018 20:43

He's back at work this week as far as I know.

Whitney168 · 29/12/2018 20:44

OMG, I reckon I’m going to do it - had a fabulous hairdresser for years, but he’s changed career and I’ve been trying to find someone else I like for 2 years.

How far in advance do you normally have to book?

Does he take plump middle-aged women?

OP posts:
Isitmybathtimeyet · 29/12/2018 20:46

That's basically me, so yes, he does. He's a lovely bloke, very warm and kind, and you leave him with your self esteem sky-high.

Not sure about the booking as I've done in way in advance because of my own circumstances rather than his. It's not months and months I don't think!

ourkidmolly · 29/12/2018 20:47

Looks different but wow £300 for highlights and cut.

Whitney168 · 29/12/2018 20:55

How long is an appointment with him - longer than the usual hour?

OP posts:
Isitmybathtimeyet · 29/12/2018 20:59

The first time he sees you, he spends time talking to you to get to know you, and what you want from your hairstyle - maintenance, products etc. He then talks you through what he thinks the options are. I've got very thick hair so that takes time in itself but I'd say allow three hours or so. He'll give you an idea when he books you in.

He isn't cheap, this is true, so I guess it's whether you have and want to spend the money. I vacillated before my first appointment but hadn't had a cut for 18 months so the cost broken down over all that time wasn't too bad.

Whitney168 · 29/12/2018 21:08

Have sent him an email - would be February I’d be looking to go, as have just had another fairly crap cut.

Just looked at his Facebook page and there’s a link there to the thread from last time. Like others on that thread, I am embracing the grey ( although with Colorista pink bits at the moment, which have only really taken on my fairly small remaining highlighted bits LOL).

Very keen on having a good cut so the grey doesn’t make it look like I’m entirely letting myself go.

I'm middle-aged and I felt very welcome. He gave me good care tips. If your hair is dry, use masks 1-2 times per week, with a shower cap over and apply heat for 15 mins. I also use a thickening, de-frizz serum after a little oil. That weights my hair down and makes it look thicker. (It is thicker due to the clever cut).
My first appointment was about 2 hiurs. 2nd about 1.5. He takes his time. I have a blow dry sometimes at a local salon and it's noticeable that they can blow dry it better due to the cut.

thefirstmrsdewinter · 29/12/2018 23:02

Yes, if you can afford it do it. Mark is a gorgeous person, very unstarry, loves his job, loves helping women through the middle-age fog.

ProjectGainsborough · 30/12/2018 09:09

Sorry for the derail, but @DianaT1969 what is the thickening defrizzing serum you use? It sounds like a holy grail for me!

Sarcelle · 30/12/2018 09:12

I keep looking longingly at his site for a while.

Is it awkward going to his house? I am not posh, young or stylish. And I have a bad scalp (seb derm) - I worry that I will be out of place. (Stupid, I know, but I do.)

Sarcelle · 30/12/2018 09:16

Also, another daft question, does he wash your hair or do you do it yourself?

Isitmybathtimeyet · 30/12/2018 09:19

Not remotely awkward. It's a lovely warm house, not cutting edge stylish but beautiful to be in. And he washes your hair.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 30/12/2018 09:21

And Mark himself is neither posh nor young!

DianaT1969 · 30/12/2018 09:44

@ProjectGainsborough
When it is towel dry, I use argan oil sparingly, just a couple of drops to the ends then a 10p size blob of this vo5 stuff through the middle to ends. Although it doesn't say thickening on it, it has the effect of making it appear fuller and weighted. Not at all greasy and the hair stays soft.

DianaT1969 · 30/12/2018 09:51

Oh and about Mark and his home. He is from Glasgow originally, very down-to-earth. Not at all posh or pretentious. He comes across as well-travelled, hard-working and a dog-lover. He has a good sense of humour and could talk to anyone. He washed my hair and I think he prefers to do it (unless you ask him not to I guess). His home is a Victorian conversion flat and artfully decorated. He dedicates one large room to hair. It's a 5 min walk from Tulse Hill overground station. 5 mins in the other direction is the more upmarket area of Dulwich.

ProjectGainsborough · 30/12/2018 10:27

Amazing, thank you @Diana! Flowers

Sarcelle · 30/12/2018 12:28

Thanks. I am seriously tempted. I don't need colour so the cut price is comparable to what I have paid in a central London salon before.
